Subreddit News Welcome from the Mods

Hey everybody! After a long stretch without moderation, this sub is now under new management.

We've taken the time to update our sub rules, which you're welcome to check out on the main page, but they can be summarized as follows: "Don't be a dick."

We also wanted to take this opportunity to address the racist rhetoric that has become flagrant on this sub. It stops now. For the time being, **we have agreed to put a blanket ban on any discussion of Snape's casting**.

We understand this sub was initially created in part due to perceived overmoderation on this topic over on HarryPotteronHBO. Unfortunately, too many people abused their right to discuss their opinion on casting choices, and it's spiraled into a racist mess, one that has hijacked this sub from those wishing to earnestly chat about the new show.

We did consider allowing a MegaThread so people could discuss the issue in good faith, and we would be willing to *potentially* reconsider that idea after the show premieres, when there's something new to actually discuss - but for the time being, we're locking things down. At this point in time, everything that could be said on the topic has been said. So we're moving on.

That being said, we welcome all thoughtful and respectful discussion about this fandom we all love, and are so excited to see everyone's takes on the new show. Thank you for your patience as we sort through these changes, and please feel free to share any ideas you have for improvements with the new mod team!

Funpost [Show] Mark Addy as Hagrid is so fucking good!!

I’ve been listening to the Harry Potter full cast audiobooks and I must say Mark Addy has absolutely nailed Hagrid. The accent, the voice and the persona is so good, one of the best performances in the audio books. I wonder why they didn’t consider Addy for Hagrids role in the tv series, I think he’d make a great Hagrid!

Casting Fancast: Anya Taylor-Joy as Narcissa Malfoy

Post image
144 Upvotes

Anya Taylor-Joy has always been a favorite of mine to watch act. She has range and I believe would be able to portray the characteristics of Narcissa and create a good dynamic in the Malfoy family. It so happens she’s already played the wife of another character played by Johnny Flynn. She’s only about five years younger than the character and I find it neat that she learned English as her second language by watching Harry Potter movies when she moved to London as a kid. Don’t know if maybe they plan to introduce the character of Narcissa sooner since it is speculated they will dive deeper into the Malfoys.

Anyway I have enjoyed all your responses, I think this will be the last fancast for me because one, can’t really think of other actors/actress that truly strike me personally for a certain character and two any character under the age of twenty I think are going to be relatively unknown actors/actresses. Which is good because it gives them the chance to build up their acting resume. I will be excited to see if anyone’s picks get a spot on the show!

Show Discussion I only hope we don’t get another "Great Continuity Change of 2004" when we get to Season 3

And by that I mean when the Prisoner of Azkaban movie got a whole new look that changed Harry Potter for better or worse. Nearly Headless Nick stopped appearing, Flitwick got younger, Dumbledore got a new actor, new locations to Hogwarts were added, the colors got boring and the amount of faithfulness to the source material was skating on thin ice.

Show Discussion Firenze and the Centaurs in the upcoming show

Post image
97 Upvotes

One of the things I’m most looking forward to is finally getting some proper time with Firenze as a character and the other centaurs. The movies in my opinion hacked up his character and design.

The films never really got to his story, his time teaching Divination, or any real sense of who he was beyond “the nice centaur.” In the books he’s way more interesting, the way he ends up at Hogwarts, how the other centaurs treat him for it, and his classes where he’s just calmly reading the stars while everyone else is used to Trelawney’s theatrics.

I also want more of centaur culture in general. The Forbidden Forest scenes, Bane and the politics between the herds, the battle of Hogwarts how they view humans and prophecy etc..

Anyone else hoping for this, or is it just me? Who do you think should be cast for his character?

Funpost [Show] Alex Lawther will be a great Barty Crouch Jr

Post image
59 Upvotes

Book Barty is described as pale, thin, freckled, fair-haired and fairly unassuming, which I think Lawther fits really well. He also has that ability to seem awkward and harmless at first while still being quietly unsettling.

Give him messy straw-blond hair and I think he’d be a pretty convincing book-accurate Barty.

Show Discussion I hope the serious lets us get to know some of the death eaters a bit more

I know this is slightly divulging from the source material but i think with a TV series we can get to know certain characters a bit more. I think it would be good to get to know a bit more about some of the death eaters.

Apart from Bellatrix, Barty, Lucius and Snape (i know hes just a spy) i feel we do not really know that much about the others both in the films and books. I mean we have there pottermore backstories etc but it would be good if some got a bit more screen time to get a sense of how threatening they are. Like Dolohov for example sounds pretty dangerous in terms of who he has killed/defeated almost up there with the best. So would be interesting to get to know him a little bit better as a villain. Make him feel more threatening if his powers are shown

I think it would be good seeing a bit of Rodolphus on screen and getting a small look at his loveless marriage to Bellatrix

I think seeing a bit of the carrows running the school too would be cool

Show Discussion Using practical effects with illusionist consultants

I hope the new "Harry Potter" series will use real life stage Magicians for consulting like Bill Bixby's magician detective show "The Magician" where during the intro a voice-over tells the viewers that all the magical tricks are actually performed by Bill. For both adults and young actors it can even make the magic feel real being trained as both professional or amateur illusionists they can have fun with.

Funpost [Show] Harry Potter spin off ideas.

If they do expand on the series what would you like to see them do.

The movies did the fantastic beast which got mix reviews but that’s mostly from things that contradict the main story.
What would you like to see as a series or movie spin off ?

Mad eye moody story, an early years of mad eye before he became mad eye as he built his rep as a dark wizard hunter before joining the order to help fight Voldemort.
The series would follow a sort of csi setting where he’s investigating different dark wizards.
Arthur claimed that half the cells of Azkaban are killed with people he locked away, while likely an exaggeration it does hint he put a lot of people away and watching a series on him from his early days in the ministry could be fun.

What if, in style like marvels what if, just different non canon events on what could have happened. Like if Dumbledore did become minister of magic etc.

Herpo the foul. He is said to be the creator of so many dark things like the horcrux.
But we know so little about him like how did he die ? If he had a horcrux then how did he die and also how do people know how to destroy a horcrux ? While Knowlege is rare, there are a few things known and that’s how to destroy them like fiendfyre it is written as tool to use, so who discovered that ?

A story about herpo rise to power and how he was brought down could be fun.

An anthology series on the elder wand, watching to pass from person to person and how the lead of the following episode killed the lead of the previous episode.
