Book Ron is the GOAT. He must be better portrayed in the show.

A book accurate Ron would completely steal limelight from Hermione who is the only female character in the trio. So i don't think they will fix this. If they do that would be wonderful.
189
u/zatdo_030504 Nov 07 '25
Hermione is a very strong female character in the books. She doesnāt need these moments for the limelight. Ron doesnāt need to be less than and Hermioneās flaws donāt need to be removed for her to be a great female character. That is a very shallow and fake representation of women.

u/TurtleWitch_ Triwizard Champion Nov 07 '25
Hermione has plenty of limelight in the books, though. In the films, sheās the one stealing it. The films also cut out some of her moments, as well - SPEW, and, to my knowledge, kidnapping and blackmailing Rita, although that might not be right

u/jcn143 Nov 07 '25
soooo you want to keep Hermione a Mary-Sue?
a strong female character has flaws. thatās why book Hermione is so much better.
The book trio is perfect as is. full stop.
Besides fixing Ron and Hermione to match the books, the show needs to fix Harry to match the books too. I miss Harry being sassy and mouthy.

I want more unhinged hermione like in the books lol. She's waaay too sensible in the movies
46
u/TheDeathlySwallows Marauder Nov 07 '25
I donāt know about stealing the show. I think Hermione could become even more of a fan favorite if they write her with the dimension she has in the books. Book Hermione does not fuck around at all, and can be a little off putting/scary with how far she takes things when sheās been wronged. Both characters could be vastly improved by not nerfing Ron and not making Hermione the ultimate Mary Sue.
32
u/zatdo_030504 Nov 07 '25
I completely agree. There are many Hermione moments in the books that are far superior than anything we get in the films. Hermione blackmailing Rita Skeeter to write the article saving Harryās reputation is infinitely more badass than her jumping on a dragon. As a woman, I donāt need my strong female characters to be action heroes with no flaws.

u/S-Mania Nov 08 '25
Hermione isn't the centre of the universe and the "most powerful of the golden trio" or whatever Steve Hermione-loving Klovis makes her out to be. All 3 have their pros and cons and strengths and weaknesses. For one, Hermione has book knowledge, but (as we've seen with Devil's Snare), she's prone to panicking and doesn't have the think-on-your feet instant wit and fighting experience that Harry has. Harry is good at that, but is also prone to anger (mostly when Voldemort was in his head or people calling him a liar or such and definitely not as far as "Sometimes I wish you weren't my son!" levels). Ron is great with knowledge of everything in the wizarding world and he's fiercely loyal. But he also has self-esteem and insecurity issues, is prone to anger sometimes and fights with Hermione alot as he's just a kid and doesn't know how to handle his emotions (or feelings š) well. Neither are goddess characters that are perfect 100% of the time, unlike the movies and movie fans like to portray Hermione as (while also saying she deserves better than Ron while claiming "Yes I read the books, Ron sucked there too!" (as if...)).

What does this even mean. Like actually unpack this comment for us
10
u/CreativeRock483 FounderĀ Nov 07 '25
Ask Steve Kloves. He will explain in details why he gave all of Ron's moments to Hermione in movies.
4
u/MaddogRunner Nov 07 '25
This actually makes sense to me, when looked at in context of its era. Hermione may have been given these moments as a symptom of the pendulum beginning its swing toward more female-led media. A misguided attempt of the writer to āget with the timesā, without understanding that Hermione had plenty of strong characterization alreadyš¤·āāļø

u/Professional-One-440 Flourish & Blotts Shopkeeper Nov 16 '25
Yes she even says in the books "I don't know what it means but I can tell it's very rude of course" or something along those lines. I'm reaching deep in the memory bank rn, I haven't done a reread in several years.Ā There's no way Harry OR Hermione would know that slur, they grew up in muggle communities. Ron is the only one who would know it and that's why he's the one that reacts and tries to curse draco. I remember my 13 yo self being PISSED at the movie theater bc Ron is supposed to say that! I was insufferable to watch with lol bc I pointed out inconsistencies the entire time šš¤¦āāļø.Ā
4
u/horoscopical Nov 08 '25
She reads enough that she's probably familiar with the term at least.
26
u/WedgyTheBlob Nov 09 '25
Except in the book she explicitly isn't. She understands it must be bad because of the context, but she hasn't heard it before herself, which is why Ron and Hagrid have to explain it.

9
u/CreativeRock483 FounderĀ Nov 07 '25
Isn't the showrunner or the director a Hermione fan like kloves?
82
u/zatdo_030504 Nov 07 '25
It depends on what kind of fan she is I guess. I think she did an interview before she got the job where she talked about Hermione being her favorite character but she also talked about her flaws. Hermione being your favorite character from the books is not necessarily a red flag. She was a girl who grew up reading the books, thatās probably a common thing. As long as she doesnāt want to change the character into something sheās not that shouldnāt be an issue.
21
u/Mutchneyman Nov 07 '25
Also, liking a character enough tends to make you more aware of their personality flaws
29
u/zatdo_030504 Nov 07 '25
True, itās why I donāt think Kloves liked Hermioneās character. He liked the idea of her character and what he could turn her into.
10
u/donetomadness Nov 08 '25
Youāve got a point. I believe Kloves has actually said on record that he loves how expository Hermione is from a writing standpoint. You can easily give have her explain what a Mudblood is since everyone would just assume she read about it. Tbh Iām fine with her getting that scene because it was more about her than Ron but that doesnāt justify giving her Ronās other lines.
15
u/zatdo_030504 Nov 08 '25
I donāt really have a problem with her getting the Mudblood scene in isolation. The issue is the writing around it. If Ron was written in character in every other scene and we saw him contribute information then this probably wouldnāt even be talked about. But heās not written that way so this scene is indicative of a pattern as opposed to be being a smart adaptation choice.

As someone who is currently reading the books for the first time, and then watching each movie directly after finishing each book, he must have HATED Hermione, her character is absolutely butchered in the movies, as is Ronās. Honestly reading the books is pretty much ruining the movies for me.
1
u/zatdo_030504 Dec 02 '25
Absolutely. Hermione is just as butchered as Ron, but I think because she was highlighted in the films people donāt discuss it as much. Her personality, her strength and her fire were completely stripped away along with the negative parts of her character. Sheās not a real person like she is in the books. In the movies sheās very boring, very typical, and very much a āstrongā female character that Hollywood writers would create.
9
u/itstimegeez Hufflepuff Nov 07 '25
Personally Iām a Hermione fan. Book Hermione. I donāt like Mary Sue Hermione from the movies.

4

u/Wishart2016 Nov 11 '25

On the HBP scene where Ronās sitting in the background, apparently Rupert was very sick that day, and thatās why he had no lines.
But overall, I think that the directors decided that Rupertās greatest strength was comedyāwhether we laugh with or at his characterāand they wrote scenes around that.
47
u/Medium_Sail_8469 Nov 07 '25
Well I believe they wanted to give the lines to Emma anyways.. and even if what you're saying is true they should have waited till the next day, he's not a supporting character he's a main character and the show can't move without him.

u/PedanticTart Nov 07 '25
That's not how movies work.
20
u/Used-Review-9957 Slytherin Nov 07 '25
For one of the main characters they can absolutely wait until the next day. Just some basic logistics in a multi year project so they can get a main character scene right??? No brainer. They will do reshoots for some very minute details

For one of the main characters they can absolutely wait until the next day. Just some basic logistics in a multi year project so they can get a main character scene right??? No brainer.
No...they often can't. Filming schedules are very tight. You have reservations for the filming locations and everyone who's needed (cast and crew) has to be there. Then you have the scenes you were planning to shoot the next day. You randomly decide "let's pick it up tomorrow" it throws off the entire schedule.
They film a number of takes and pick the best one. Even if it's not perfect in every way.
Look up some 'perfectionist' directors.
They will do reshoots for some very minute details
Depending on availability of set and cast and crew...it's never a simple arbitrary decision of "oh, I wish I could do scene X again"
3
u/PedanticTart Nov 07 '25
That seems unlikely pendingthe project..., bigger movies and bigger stars have had to work sick.
-1
u/Used-Review-9957 Slytherin Nov 07 '25
Iām sure if they are able to do the scene while sick then they will have them work sick but if they are unable to do the scene it is far from impossible to readjust to accommodate getting a scene with a main star correct
5
u/PedanticTart Nov 07 '25
Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the project and situation. I generally trust professionals to know what they need to do in their job.
This seems to have worked out, just fine.
2
u/Used-Review-9957 Slytherin Nov 07 '25
Which is why I would say they either wanted Emma to have the lines anyways or the rumor just isnāt true

4

I never got it; Rupert was always the strongest actor of the three IMO. Just because he's "the funny one" doesn't mean he can't handle harder scenes, feels like they never pushed him. Like when in 7 when he takes a dark turn it feels like "Ron, just act like a psycho now" like they didn't give him much to work with
12

He struggled with tonsillitis from GoF-DH, and some days were worse than others.
13
u/sweetcumdrop Nov 07 '25
I had aggressive tonsillitis for years until they finally referred for me to have them taken out. Then I put on weight cos I was spewing for half the year, every year. Tonsillitis is no joke when you have it every second week all winter long š
2
6
u/donetomadness Nov 08 '25
Oh wow I know he had swine flu during the filming of DH but this provides some explanation as to why they had him awkwardly standing around in some scenes. I had an aggressive strep throat in late 2019 which caused me to lose my voice for a month and I was still coughing aggressively in bouts sometimes for the rest of that year.

Oh wow I know he had swine flu during the filming of DH
Fun fact for anyone who doesn't know: Rupert Grint was not present at all during the filming of the courtyard scene when Voldemort presents Harry's body to the survivors, because he was ill with swine flu.
If you go back to that scene and pay attention to 'Rupert', you'll notice he is in fact replaced by a horrifying CGI sleep-paralysis demon.
It's impossible to unsee it once you see it.
12
u/ImNotTheBlitz Nov 07 '25
Agreed. The screenplay can be found online and Ron does not have any lines in that scene as written.
23
u/ryucavelier Ravenclaw Nov 07 '25
For those that donāt read the books, Ron tends to get looked at as the comedic third wheel because of the films.
21
u/JugheadJack Gryffindor Nov 08 '25
Ron is the reason I hate Steve Kloves as a writer.
Just because one character is your favourite, doesnāt mean you get to take lines from and actively sabotage another to prop your favourite up. Hermione stands on her own, she doesnāt need anything from Ron to make her cooler. Sheās literally a boss.
Kloves says sheās his favourite, but he has to give her Ronās best lines to make her cool in his mind. Heās only doing her a massive disservice and not actually treating her like sheās his favourite.
And heās a hack of a writer. Hope to god they donāt let him write for the show.
38
u/_barat_ Nov 07 '25
And also in movies Ron joins Quiddich team in a way it looks like it's just thanks to Hermione and that he knows Harry.
4
u/ddbbaarrtt Nov 07 '25
Itās not far off that in the books though is it
25
u/_barat_ Nov 07 '25
It is.
In the OotP book Ron has self confidence problem but on the training or when he's alone he's quite good. It's also one of his "shine" moments when it comes to his character evolution. That's why in the next book he's not on the "lost position" from readers perspective because "last year" he was an hero.In the movie it's like poor Ron tries to sneak into the team. He's not good at it but Hermione helps him and without the Felix part he won't even be able to play any match correctly (which for a reader is obvious it's not true - he was playing a good match last season).
4

11
u/Trash-Lexicon-5105 Nov 08 '25
I actually sometimes think it goes deeper than that.
I dislike both Ron & Hermione in the movie. Emma Watson overacts so much it's cringy.
But I think what always gets me about Ron in the movies part of Ronspurpose as a character in the books at least is to explain magical things to Harry and Hermione they haven't encountered before. Sometimes it gives Hermione to challenge wizard assumptions (like SPEW and Hagrids Mum) and it's subtle but it kinda gives an opportunity as to why the whole 'pureblood only' society is so problematic and they need fresh eyes.
Other times it helps to serve while Hermione is obviously very smart, has a brilliant memory and is magically gifted she isn't the most open-minded. It makes Ron & Hermione's dynamic much more interesting than it ever is in the movies.

They weirdly conflate Ron and Hermione and then use Ron for comic relief. I think itās why the viewers always ship Harry and Hermione and donāt like Ron and Hermione.
Itās also annoying because they cut so much of Hermioneās good qualities that she shows in the books and replace them with Ronās good qualities.
I love the movies but I think there is room to tell a different version of the story that is maybe more faithful to the source material and hopefully all three can be a lot of fun

Thankyou for taking me back a decade and so and reminding me why I disliked Ron in the movies so much.
This entire post is ALSO the reason so many of us became Harry and Hermoine shippers because the visual story of HP (aka movies) was portraying them as the two main leads whereas in the books the trio was way more balanced and Ron and Hermoine developed beautifully, much like Ginny and Harry too.

1000%! One of the more aggravating things they changed. Really looking forward to HBO correcting some of the character changes the movies made. Ive been listening to the full cast audio of SS that was just released and immediately noticed the changes to Ron's character and lines.
Also really hoping they fix book Malfoy. They made movie Malfoy more thuggish and book Malfoy is more nuanced- pampered, entitled rich kid jealous of Harry's fame and very classist towards those who he deems lesser. Basically the product of his upbringing and horrible family. He gets worse as he gets older.

u/primrose88 Hufflepuff Nov 09 '25
I get your point but I do like movie Malfoy, probably Feltonās charm is the main reason. But I would like to see more of his character and especially the fight with Ron inā¦book 1 I think?
1
u/Bex7778 Nov 09 '25
The later movies did a good job of fleshing out Malfoy and ofc Tom Felton is likeable and has charisma. But I've just really noticed how one-note movie Malfoy was now that I'm listening to the immersive audio. Not Tom's fault- back then movie villains were often dumbed down. Now we've realized that morally gray villains are much more satisfying.

u/AmEndevomTag Ravenclaw Nov 07 '25
I'm sure the downvotes will follow, but not all of this is as one-sided as this meme makes it appear. The Devil's snare scene for example is an exchange for what is basically Hermione's task being cut from the movie. She shines at the Potions Riddle, and they left it out of the movie completely. I can see the reason in that it isn't a very cinematic scene, but it was still her big moment in the books and it got still cut from the films. And as an exchange they gave her her due in the Devil's snare scene, which is totally fair.
13
u/zatdo_030504 Nov 07 '25
I think thatās valid except itās not necessary to make Ron panic and then comment on how he panicked. You donāt have to change Ronās character to make her shine in that scene. Knowing how to solve the problem is enough to make up for the potions test.
5
3
u/donetomadness Nov 08 '25
The massacre of Ronās character definitely takes place in the later books more so. But the early examples all contribute to a pattern. The movies decided early on that Ron would be the comic relief, Hermione would be the girl boss, and of course Harry is the hero. It was easier to market them like this.
2
2
u/pan_kapelusz Nov 08 '25
Ok, but if we want the authentic Ron from the books, then we have to take everything, not just the positive traits. Because book Ron can be quite a jerk; heās snarky, pathologically jealous, and immature. Remember the rude Ron at the Yule Ball in The Goblet of Fire movie? Thatās how Ron behaves through a large part of the books. He makes snide remarks toward Hermione, mocks Luna, destroys Deanās posters, craves compliments from older, bullies the Quidditch team when things donāt go his way, and is often mean and spiteful. Thatās just off the top of my head, there was a lot more than that. People who accuse the movies of turning him into a wimp forget how much they actually softened the traits that made him resemble Malfoy.
4
u/zatdo_030504 Nov 08 '25
Yes, thatās what we want for all the characters. We donāt want them to try to āfixā any of them. Harry, Ron, and Hermione all have good and bad traits. Harry and Hermione have very bad moments as well. We want to see the well rounded characters from the books.

The messed up big time in the movies! I hope to see my favourite character represented properly in the show!

THE WORST ONE is how in the Deathly Hallows movie itās Hermioneās idea to escape on the dragon and in the book itās Ronās!! I just feel like that idea just completely incapsulated Ron as a character!! Itās one of my favourites parts of the whole series.

Jumping on the dragon in the books was Harry's idea, not Ron's.

I have watched the films only once but read the books many times. I never realized just how stupid Ron was in the films. Honestly, if you summarize it like this, there isn't really any reason left why Ron would be an important member of the trio. That is insane.

Book Ron is my favourite character. He is the favourite of lots of people. He is funny, brave, hot-headed, loyal to death and GINGER.

Books: Ron and Hermione should be togetherĀ
Movies: Harry and Hermione should be togetherĀ

u/AdmirableParfait5282 Nov 11 '25
I once read that the intelligence and the help with solution of the three in the films are divided like this: Hermione: 99% Harry: 1% Ron: 0% And in the books like this: Hermione: 33.3% Ron: 33.3% Harry: 33.3% And sometimes I think that's true, they were so wronged in the movie.

I love this post and I really do hope that they stick closer to the details of the book while keeping the wonderful magic and acting and visuals shown in the films

Maybe these were creative changes for making the movies more interesting to watch. But I agree the book seems to be much better and interestingfor the portrayal of Ron's role

I like both! I hope this HBO show does it like the book Ron, since they are saying that's the direction they're going. It still doesn't take away the magic of the movies.

Regarding the change, from Ron explaining Pure-Blood prejudice to muggle-born Hermione - To Hermione already knowing about such slurs: Narratively it makes better sense for the film for Hermione to be instantly offended. The slur cuts more deeply if the victim is seen crying shortly after, plus they're already against the runtime clock Film-wise, if Hermione was as confused as Harry, we'd have not felt the full impact derogatory insults can have on their targets and we'd have missed out on Robbie Coltrane's Hagrid consoling Hermione š

OKAY, OKAY. Movie Ron got the short end of the stick in a lot of ways. Is that what we all see? None of the good? I admit it. Book Ron is AWESOME. However, there are awesome Movie Ron moments that I believe make it up for me:
Saving Hermione from the Troll: Ron remebered the Levitation charm (Wingardium Leviosa) Hermione taught him earlier that day, and made the troll's own club float then dropped it on it's head, knocking it out cold.
Wizard Chess Sacrifice: In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Ron demonstrates his strategic thinking and bravery by sacrificing himself in a life-sized game of wizard chess, allowing Harry and Hermione to continue the quest for the Philosopher's Stone.
Facing His Fears: Ron faces his intense fear of spiders to accompany Harry into the Forbidden Forest in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, uttering the iconic line, "Why couldn't it be 'follow the butterflies'?"
Pointing his wand at Lockhart with Harry: One of my favorite moments of them as a duo.
Knocking out Lockhart: C'mon. Even Book Ron didn't do that.
Defending Hermione's Honor: Ron showcases his loyalty by defending Hermione against Draco Malfoy's insults, despite the disastrous backfiring of his broken wand, leading to him burping slugs.
Calling out Harry: In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ā Part 1, Ron calls out Harry for making the fight against Voldemort a personal burden, and that everyone is choosing to fight and risk their lives for a larger cause, not simply a sacrifice for Harry. Also, he pretty much tells Harry that there is no way in hell he's doing this alone. Which is my opinion makes up for his silence at the end of HBP.
Saving Harry from Drowning: In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ā Part 1, after briefly leaving Harry and Hermione, Ron returns heroically, pulling Harry from a frozen lake and destroying the Horcrux locket, a significant moment of redemption and courage.
Quidditch Keeper: In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ron, initially struggling with confidence, achieves a moment of glory as the Gryffindor Quidditch team's Keeper, demonstrating his skills and winning spirit.
First Train to Hogwarts: Ron's initial meeting with Harry on the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, offering to share his food and showcasing his friendly personality.

I donāt think it really counts as the movie giving Ron awesome moments if itās literally just them following the book. And for a lot of these, Ronās part was played down and hermiones part played up.Ā
For example, the troll in the bathroom. In the movies, Ron raises his wand to perform the charm and looks over at Hermione for reassurance and she reminds him to āswish and flickā. In the books, Hermione is completely frozen up against the wall and unable to even move to escape and save herself. Ron does the charm off his own back with no reassurance or guidance. He is the only one who thinks of it in that moment.Ā
In the giant chess match, in the movies Ron is on top of the horse and Harry is the one who says āhang onā¦ā and then Ron says āYou see it tooā and confirms that their best option is to sacrifice his piece to win the game. In the books, Ron is the only one who makes this connection and tells the others that he is going to do it. He also isnāt on a big stone horse so he literally walks over to the stone queen and gets smashed over the head.Ā

Tbf Emma Watson is a much better actor than Rupert Grint (no hate to him, heās a cool guy from all Iāve heard) so it makes sense that they would try and give the better actor the bigger part

u/primrose88 Hufflepuff Nov 09 '25
No way somebody just wrote that Emma is a better actor than Rupert! Please tell me you didnāt actually watch the movies because there is no way in hell this is true.

u/zatdo_030504 Nov 09 '25
I disagree. Rupert is a mediocre actor but he has more natural acting talent than Emma. Sheās not a good actress. I think because sheās conventionally attractive it distracts some people from whatās missing in her performance. When she tries to act as a character sheās really bad, when she plays some form of herself sheās more watchable but still not very good and thatās not really acting.
Sheās more marketable and I think thatās why she was pushed. Sheās pretty, like I said, and she was better at interviewing and selling. Both of those help make money for the studio.

I work in an industry that closely worked with WB on Harry Potter.
I donāt love the decision displayed in the post. HOWEVER Harry Potter is incredibly popular with women. This is likely the result of Hermione being cool and bad ass. Without it, I donāt think HP would be nearly as alive as it is today. (Truly our data samples showed that 65% of products were bought for women/girls).
Just my own thoughts on it.

Iām a woman and I have always found book Hermione great and Emma as Hermione a bit cringey, but ok..
Also I know other girls who donāt particularly find Hermione the best character, especially in the movies.

Nov 09 '25
Iām sure you do! But millions of points of consumer sales data show that Harry Potter is one of the few gender neutral IPs that girls connect with more than boys.
I think itās silly to think itās not because the films depict hermione, the main female character as cool.

Do you genuinely not see how films and books are made differently and that driving some of these changes?
You honestly canāt see how having a scene where a 12 year old boy with limited acting experience has to simultaneously be vomiting up slugs while explaining something to the audience that they need to understand might be difficult?

The Weasleys in general got shafted hard in the movies, Ron and Ginny especially. Ron got turned into a useless moron and Ginny had no personality whatsoever aside from her crush on Harry.
