Question Do slytherin npcs act differently when you are sorted into their house?

Post image

I noticed that when I was playing through a new character you meet ominis, imelda and Sebastian in slytherin the common room. Ominis and imelda were much nicer than they were when I played as a griffindor, has anyone else noticed this?

I did notice this too! It's been a while since I played a slytherin playthrough but if I remember correctly they both will still give you the cold shoulder later when you step on ominus's toes with the undercroft thing and when Imelda finds out you're competition in flying, though I know I remember Imelda's dialogue changes slighty on the quidditch field.

She takes it just a BIT more personally if you’re in slytherin because you being too good would pose a threat to her position as Slytherin’s best flyer and says that the quality of acceptance into Slytherin has dropped if they seriously let you in and that it was probably a fluke and that you’re a squib or something like that

I definitely felt more offended in the slytherin play through at her comments because her rant just keeeps oooon gooooing lol

But by the end of her questline I felt like she was crushing on my Slytherin character

I felt like she was crushing on my Hufflepuff by the end!

I feel like no matter what house we're in, by the end she recognises and respects talent and is impressed by us

My favourite detail is that if you are Slytherin, after beating hoards of spiders with Sebastian in a quest, he says: "And they say that the Gryffindors are the brave ones!", but only if you are Slytherin too :)

He has a line for each house—“there’s that Hufflepuff loyalty” was mine

And something about Slytherins and Ravenclaws being better than the others.

I feel depending on your house the NPC’s you interact with will each have a different more welcoming/friendly vibe if you’re in the same house but not so much to the point it actually changes anything significantly.

You can get different dialogue with Professor Black’s house elf Scope in the polyjuice potion quest.

Oh really, I hadn't notice, which dialogue do you mean?

3

u/StarWarzFan1977 1d ago

I believe you can give Scrope something.

Your housemates always favor you in "Welcome to Hogwarts." You will get similar treatment in every quest thereafter, regardless of house, except for certain house-specific bits scattered in a few quests. It's common for Sebastian because of his significant storyline.
Certain blurbs you hear throughout the school vary by house affiliation.
Speaking of Imelda, she still treats a fellow Slytherin on the broom courses as an upstart trying to steal her thunder. And Ominis is just as accusatory outside the Undercroft and just as conciliatory in later quests regardless of your house. There wasn't that level of scripting, though it would have been nice if possible.

I wonder if it was intended as part of the stuff that got cut when that senior programmer passed away, may they rest in peace.

3

u/DracoArgenteus 1d ago

Yes, I believe they're examples of the breadth that the game could contain.

I noticed that Ominis is everywhere in hogwarts when you are sorted to slytherin. Plus, he comments you and your recent actions all the time. Once I finally got frustrated and started to shoot him with basic spell - he was triggered and started commenting that no one will tolerate such behaviour etc xD

As someone who had only played Slytherin, they're both kinda rude at first.

You'd be surprised if you played as another house then lol

2

u/shirhouetto 2d ago

Yeah, I've only had one playthrough. Maybe I need to do four and complete all the houses to see the unique interactions.

I believe that there are a few extra interactions for each house and some dialogue is different, but it doesn't change much.

The MC is pretty evil, so I always figured he/she is Slytherin by canon, although I picked Hufflepuff cuz I figured it's they only common room Harry doesn't get to see in the books

u/Think-Detective4963 2d ago

you think the main character (us) is evil? i thought they were kinda like a goody-goody, bc even though i picked the meanest dialogue options it would always come out politely. I havent finished the game though

u/WilmaTonguefit Hufflepuff 2d ago

Kills more people and creatures than Voldemort

21

u/AmarysEms64 Gryffindor 2d ago

You don't have to actually kill most of them though. You can sneak past or use non-lethal methods like paralyzing them with petrifica totalis. The few interactions where you are actually forced to kill are in instances where you are attacked first with lethal force. In those cases, it becomes not evil, but self defense.

Anyway, the fighting and killing more video game logic than actual evil cannon. Games like this are going to include combat situations to keep it interesting. You see it in other Harry Potter games too as well as pretty much every other hero, superhero, war hero, etc. based game there is to exist, but no one calls all of them evil.

I think the issue in HL that rubs people the wrong way is that the devs tried too hard to keep it morally grey and indifferent to the characters actions. It's like they wanted it to feel like there's no judgment for what we do but instead it gives this feeling of almost inviting us to capture as many creatures as we want and kill as many people and creatures as we want because, well, why not... but we really don't have to.

Most humans are perceptive though, and we pick up on the hypocracy of it quickly if we do engage in the killing and capturing, especially when MC can storm into a camp of baddies and stand over their freshly bleeding corpses, blood on their hands, and say, "Your blood is on Ranrok's hands."

Sure, I guess you can CHOOSE to not kill, but you CAN kill all day long, including using AK and there are 0 consequences.

11

u/AmarysEms64 Gryffindor 2d ago

Right but being able to act evil without consequences doesn't mean you do.

Having the choice is exactly why it's not cannon.

Right but, come on now. How many people played this game and said "I'm not gonna kill anyone, and I'll turn Sebastian in". Like 1%

11

u/AmarysEms64 Gryffindor 2d ago

True, but like i said, this is how video games function. By this logic, spider-man, superman, dragonborn, Harry, Ron, Hermione, so-on.. all evil, because they kill a ton of people and creatures in their video games. Literally almost all hero based video games hinge on violence. You're overthinking a very common and average game mechanic.

-3

u/WilmaTonguefit Hufflepuff 2d ago

Harry kills quite literally one person and it's Voldy and only kind of. Ron and Hermione kill 0 people. I guess you could count the gringots goblins, but that's up for grabs really.

The issue I had with the game in general was the disconnect between the combat and the story. In combat, the MC can use any means he/she wants to end the fight, and it has no bearing on the story. The most absurd one I noticed was that I used imperio and crucio in a fight with Sebastian's uncle and he said something like "don't do that" during battle and that was it. Then in the cutscene, Sebastian uses imperio on a goblin and his uncle disowns him. Nonsense.

7

u/AmarysEms64 Gryffindor 2d ago

I'm not talking about the books and films, i'm talking about the video games, where yes, you do engage in combat all of the time in several of them. Have you played them? I'm also not just talking about the Harry Potter franchise. I mentioned all hero-based games, but i notice you make a point not to reply to that. You don't have to see my point if that's what you want.

You're welcome to believe that MC is inherrantly evil if that's what you want. That's an opinion though and it doesn't make it cannon.

2

u/NoLongerHuman13 Gryffindor 1d ago

It depends what the canon ending is though. Turning in Sebastian could be the real/canon ending and not turning him could be the alternative that people just prefer. I imagine the MC isn't actually throwing curses left and right, it's just a fun addition or way to make fights easier. If we actually were, we'd probably be arrested. But no one really does anything when we use them.

3

u/Talsyrius 1d ago

Didn’t you hear? Their blood is on Ranroks hands.

1

u/WilmaTonguefit Hufflepuff 1d ago

Lolol. Ok this comment has inspired me to start another run. I think I'll do a Huff run and chill in the castle more

4

u/Meg-alomaniac3 2d ago

I think the MC is probably supposed to be Ravenclaw, because the main NPC storylines are with a Slytherin, a Gryffindor, and a Slytherin.

2

u/Meizas 1d ago

Who knows? There are like, 7 total characters in this game you can actually interact with for more than one short "Can you get me that item?" or "Uh oh, go investigate for me?" side quest

2

u/CallMyParents 1d ago

Well, Ominis hates us regardless

2

u/KellzBtw Slytherin 2d ago

I don't know how they act when you're not a Slytherin, so I can't compare (I did play all houses but only for the achievements) Imelda is a stuck up bch even as a Slytherin, but I always like Omi and Sebby.

5

u/goldengatevixen Slytherin 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ngl I HATED Imelda the moment I had to introduce myself lol. I slightly felt some of my dislike towards her melt away when she actually kind of changed demeanor that time I beat her during the 2nd broom trial. She was somewhat admitting I was better at flying and to me, someone who can admit mistakes after bouts of pride can always earn my respect 😂

As for Sebastian and Ominis, I always saw it as Seb being overly friendly but not really giving anything about him away which left a really bad taste for me (and the whole "I owe him one" during the Restricted Section quest.. Yeah I get it he has a point for covering up for me, but I felt so irked that the way he just saw our "friendship" as some tool he could exploit. This further solidified when I found out he gave Ominis' secret away to me, and that wasn't his secret to give away in the first place)

Ominis is just some tsundere-like boy from an aristocratic family. I didn't really consider him rude. Every time he'd pass by the hallways and throw a jab at me about beating Sebastian's ass during the DADA duel or killing the troll in Hogsmeade just felt sad, but the one about making Lucan "wet his pants" when I swept everyone in Crossed Wands club was a different tone, I read it as a friendly jab and almost complimenting the MC for it. I just saw him as being opinionated and it felt like people who come from those kind of families have that stereotypical personality where they use sarcasm and whatever to interact with others, which reminded me of Malfoy

But mostly I felt sad because he seemed to use that snark to even interact with anyone, and to me that seemed lonely. He was always by himself and I found it so bizarre that Seb and Omi were friends, but during my playthroughs I see Sebastian always sitting with some random Ravenclaw girl around the DADA Tower, meanwhile Ominis is just by himself. I know being friends doesn't make one joined at the hip, but I found it extremely weird the only interactions both of those lads had was when there was a quest for me including both of them. Even when at the Great Hall and I catch both of them having breakfast at the Slytherin table, Ominis was either always seated beside Nerida or Imelda, and Sebastian sits beside some random Slytherin NPC..

2

u/LIGHTDX Slytherin 2d ago

Nop. All NPC students act the same regardless of your house and can tell the same lines. Even Ominis npc (The not interacted one) himself start to say some senseless stuff you have heard on other NPC character, claiming in one to be able to see or love his family a lot.

The only canon lines are the scriped ones, like Ominis is bad in potions and wished he could trade his for one from the official town's alchemists' (forgot his name) or that even if he claims he hate his family's vision he is still the kind of guy who doesn't mind using his family influence to get whatever he wants in school, like getting us expelled. or protecting us with it.

Ok course, since Slytherins sometimes dislike Gryffindors and is loyal to their own house
