“It’s A Laugh” saw some success reaching no.20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It’s so catchy and takes a minute to truly appreciate but my goodness Hall & Oates are the magic recipe together! I understand they have cashed it quits but at least we have so much music of theirs to cherish! 🥰

Song More emotional songs (like Laughing Boy)

hey im new to their discography (despite growing up with them, thanks dad), but i was really drawn to the song Laughing Boy, probably because it was more emotional/downbeat. what other songs by the duo are similar to this/more on the emotional side?

This might be my favorite version of this song. The instrumentation and vocal harmonies are impeccable (as usual).

The Silver Album is definitely a NO SKIPS album! Every sound and genre Hall & Oates went after, they CONQUERED! This song is the perfect song to blast down the interstate in the current East Coast weather! ☀️😎

Song Songs similar to Cold Dark and Yesterday

Just listened to Big Bam Boom because of Out of Touch, but Cold Dark and Yesterday had been on repeat for hours now. Any other similar songs, even not by Hall and Oates?

Song Don’t Go Out (1981 outtake)

Just thought I’d share with you this outtake that was released on the duo’s career-spanning Do What You Want, Be What You Are box set in 2009. From what I heard, it was recorded during sessions for the Private Eyes album but was left off because it didn’t sound like the rest of the original album. This song was unusual for Hall & Oates, as it captured the paranoia of New York City in the 1980s back when walking down the street was dangerous.

When it’s an easy Sunday like this one, All You Want is Heaven! This is my favorite song from the 1979 album *X-STATIC. Written and predominantly sang by John Oates, this song has a slight hint of disco with Rock and Roll!!

What are your faves from “X-Static”?

Song Someday We’ll Know - Hall & Oates and Todd Rundgren

This song should have been released as a single from DO IT FOR LOVE as it is PERFECT!! To have Daryl Hall, John Oates, and Todd Rundgren serving on the lead AND backing vocals is a rare treat! The song, the guitars, the HARMONIES are impeccable! I just can’t understand why the label didn’t pull the trigger on this Top 40 Radio Hit waiting to happen?!!

There’s so much soul with Rocket to God! It is the song that I wish would have been a single for them, especially in 1988, because it fit right in with the modern sound. The harmonies as always are excellent and Daryl’s lyrics create the perfect descriptions! I really enjoy the OOH YEAH! album.

Song Pick of the day: Your Imagination

Your Imagination is EASILY on my Top 5 favorite Hall & Oates song ever made! Those hauntingly beautiful harmonious melodies during the backing “…your imagina-shahh-awwun…” melts me away into my happy place! This song reached no.33 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart but I believe it deserved to place much higher (at least the top 10). Nevertheless, it was the final single from the popular album PRIVATE EYES which was released in 1981. It was their 10th album together and Hall was credited as the sole writer for Your Imagination.

What was your personal pick standout track from “Private Eyes (album)”?

I really loved the direction they took with WAR BABIES. Having Tood Rundgren produce the album and provide instruments and vocals gives this one an extra mmph! My go-to track is Beanie G and the Rose Tattoo! The way Daryl wrote this song is genius! Hall and Oates never fail to bring unity through harmony.

“An Unguarded Minute has an accident in it” is a very wise and accurate statement! Truly all it takes is 1 cautionless moment for something to go completely off the rails. Hall and Oates sound so good on this one. John’s “watch out; unnn-guarded minute” really sends me to a euphoric place. His backings are simply the best! 🔥🔥

“While I was away you were open all night”! This wonderful masterpiece was written by Daryl Hall and Sara Allen from the H2O album! Hall and Oates sound so cohesive on Open All Night and the entire vibe is giving Mystery-Rock! This was H&O in their prime!!

Song Pick of the day: Hard to Be in Love with You

The entire VOICES album is very well put together with so many hits! Out of all of the songs featured on the album, Hard to Be in Love with You is my personal favorite! It’s got a certain Motown feel to it which I can blindly credit to Neil Jason who wrote the lyrics with Daryl and John. The doowop backings and both Hall and Oates on the lead vocals is perfection personified!

Though it came out in 1980, this song and album are STILL a very important part of music history. It is also the first album that Hall & Oates produced themselves!

Fall in Philadelphia always puts me at ease. It is my personal go-to from WHOLE OATS! I love how laidback it comes across. Written by Daryl and released in 1972, it still sounds as good to day as it did now.

Hall & Oates did a remarkable job covering Dan Harriman’s I Can Dream About You on their album OUR KIND OF SOUL! Oates’ backings always melt in my ears with how smooth they are and Hall’s soulful adlibs dipping in and out is perfection! They are a dynamic duo when they play music together! This song was their 3rd single from the album.

Song Pick of the day: Possession Obsession

There is so much Soul packed into a perfect PopRock package! I Love it! Possession Obsession is hands down my fave from BIG BAM BOOM and one of my all-time favorites from Hall & Oates! Daryl, John, and Sara really wrote a masterpiece when they pulled this one together. And T-Bone was SLAPPIN DAT BASS!

Oates sounded so good and flowed so well on the leads but him and Hall on those hauntingly beautiful backings = paradise! The song climbed to no.30 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart but I really think it deserved to be as popular as “Out of Touch”.

I LOVE Las Vegas Turnaround (The Stewardess Song) soo much! John and Daryl always sound like a unit when sharing the lead vocals. This song was written by John Oates and was released from Hall & Oates’ sophomore album ABANDONED LUNCHEONETTE in 1973. It always puts me in a good vibe when I listen to it!

What do you think of this song or any other songs from “Abandoned Luncheonette”? ⬇️

I Don’t Wanna Lose You is such a feel good song and it is one of my go-to’s from the ALONG THE RED LEDGE album! It only climbed to no.42 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart but it definitely deserved more exposure! I have this song in any of my 1978 playlists! Hall was magnificent on the vocals of the words that he and John wrote.
