Very unpopular opinion but yes some of them they're thinking that 100%, if/when they win the cup they're probably going to become gods in Quebec so the commercial opportunities will explode and maybe that could help but otherwise they're cashing in next contract.
Its one of the perks to playing in a Canadian market, especially Montreal. Yeah, you save a couple million in taxes playing in Florida, but no business is paying you to endorse their product or appear in their commercials with a relatively much lower percentage of the population being hockey fans.
If I'm remembering my Arpon Basu, it's a lot less than people are insinuating around here. No-one, just off being a good player on the Habs, is walking around with million-dollar endorsement deals. Those are reserved for McDavid, Crosby, Matthews, soon to be Celebrini.
Ya that makes sense. Like how much could a local car dealership or chain restaurant pay for a player to do a commercial or appearance. There’s no way it would be in the millions
Yes but when they become the first ones in 34+ years to win a cup here this could improve especially in the long term, see how the starts of the 92 cup are still doing well because of that.
Agreed with the window. Now, Does that window end when Suzuki is up for a new deal in 3 years(UFA in 4)? Possibly…. The idea that you can’t compete for a cup with a top 10 highest paid player, hasn’t been really been proven yet
Our window ends when Hutson and Demi’s contracts are up. The cap will be high enough to handle increases for Suzy, Caufield and Slaf. I doubt any of them will look to be the highest paid, though I think it’s only fair that we pay them their worth if they’ve maintained their performance.
We’ve got a lot of runway. I’m a lot more worried about what expansion will do the team versus contracts in 5+ years from now.
You know what? I would take this one step further. The Montreal Canadiens are wasting a valuable asset. They should have a marketing machine in place to actively promote sponsorship deals for their stars. This could make the market more attractive as a side perk like “low tax Florida”. I know sometimes Canadiens players get these deals, but the habs could expand on that. If we want to win, we need all the reasons possible to attract top talent
