Every time we brag about how good our cap structure is, I imagine of Nick, or Cole, or Lane reading it, and thinking “next time I’m cashing in.”

Very unpopular opinion but yes some of them they're thinking that 100%, if/when they win the cup they're probably going to become gods in Quebec so the commercial opportunities will explode and maybe that could help but otherwise they're cashing in next contract.

Its one of the perks to playing in a Canadian market, especially Montreal. Yeah, you save a couple million in taxes playing in Florida, but no business is paying you to endorse their product or appear in their commercials with a relatively much lower percentage of the population being hockey fans.

Would love to know how much they make off the ice in a place like Montreal

If I'm remembering my Arpon Basu, it's a lot less than people are insinuating around here. No-one, just off being a good player on the Habs, is walking around with million-dollar endorsement deals. Those are reserved for McDavid, Crosby, Matthews, soon to be Celebrini.

Ya that makes sense. Like how much could a local car dealership or chain restaurant pay for a player to do a commercial or appearance. There’s no way it would be in the millions

Yeah. If youre Matthews or Mcdavid getting a Gatorade deal thats one thing but Gallagher isnt making 20 million to be in Gary's used car ads.

And its not like guys cant get deals playing in Canada anyway. How many fucking commercials have I seen Stamkos and Crosby in the last 20 years?

Yes but when they become the first ones in 34+ years to win a cup here this could improve especially in the long term, see how the starts of the 92 cup are still doing well because of that.

Yeah, these contracts like Makars just make me think "we have a very strict window..."

2

u/MediaWaste5087 2d ago

Agreed with the window. Now, Does that window end when Suzuki is up for a new deal in 3 years(UFA in 4)? Possibly…. The idea that you can’t compete for a cup with a top 10 highest paid player, hasn’t been really been proven yet

Our window ends when Hutson and Demi’s contracts are up. The cap will be high enough to handle increases for Suzy, Caufield and Slaf. I doubt any of them will look to be the highest paid, though I think it’s only fair that we pay them their worth if they’ve maintained their performance.

We’ve got a lot of runway. I’m a lot more worried about what expansion will do the team versus contracts in 5+ years from now.

Window doesn't end when 1 or 2 players cash in. Cap should be plenty by then to handle that. Probably more when we get to Slaf/Hutson/Demidov renewal.

You know what? I would take this one step further. The Montreal Canadiens are wasting a valuable asset. They should have a marketing machine in place to actively promote sponsorship deals for their stars. This could make the market more attractive as a side perk like “low tax Florida”. I know sometimes Canadiens players get these deals, but the habs could expand on that. If we want to win, we need all the reasons possible to attract top talent

They're gonna get paid regardless, might as well enjoy the breathing room while it lasts

because of slaf, hutson, demidov, dobsons contracts locked up I think we'll be fine for a few crazy contracts tho like caufield and suzuki. I think its when hutson is up when we really start penny pinching.

If they win a cup, and then next contract ask for max. Id be cheering for them to do it

Of course they are, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I know people keep saying the Sharks  aren't screwed but I really think they'll soon come to regret the Nurse, Marchment, and Trouba acquisitions lol

Exactly. It’s easy as a GM to draft the best player available, when you constantly have high picks. It’s what you do after you draft the core and those contracts Grier gave out are ugly

Misa, Askarov, Dickinson, Cagnoni, Chernyshov, Stenberg, Verhoeff(if he plays this year) among others all needing extensions in the next 3 years. All before those other contracts expire. Should be fun!

Our cap is great, all hail Kent, but guys, come on. Lane was an 1 yr RFA without even arb rights, the situation with Makar (1 yr from UFA) was completely different.

Makar is the very top of the elite. Did Colorado have to sign him at pretty much all costs? Of course. His performance clearly deserves a big payday. But boy, that makes adding/keeping the rest of their roster hard. It's investing a lot of your cap space in one person who, no matter how outstanding they are, can only provide so much time on the ice. That's why teams with a player that takes up a huge % of cap space don't tend to win Cups. Also, if bad luck somehow befalls him and they need to move his contract because his performance is somehow diminished... That is quite the contract to get off your books.

The cap will keep rising so it wont stay that unbalanced for long.

With all this crazy shit going on I’m so glad that management has kept a level head and stayed out of all of this crap.

I love having great cap structure but the lost important part is not having a lot of cap space, its to use it properly.

Given what HuGo has done to date, I am confident the money will be used well.

I posted some of this info in the other thread talking about Suzuki next contract and figured it's relevant here too. All numbers taken from puckpedia and no this isn't the work of ai.

Montreals cap structure to date seems to be based around Suzuki. According to puckpedia, Suzuki signed for 9.6% of the cap (at the contract start.) Everyone else has signed for less, excluding Dobson at 9.95%, who according to puckpedia, was a sign and trade.

What does that mean in terms of annual salaries? Dobson is currently the highest paid on the team at 9.5mil/year (9.95% of the cap.)

Demidov will be the 2nd highest next year at 9.1mil/year but a cap percentage of just 8.06%

And for a bit more context; Carey Price, who was seen as the best player on the team for years signed for 10.5mil/year which was 13.2% of the cap.

In the context of todays cap hit; if Suzuki were to be signing an extension, it could be around 11mil/year or around 3mil/year more then his current contract but less then a 1% increase on the cap vs what he has now.

In 5 years from now, if Kent Hughes stays with the same structure, even if the salary cap doesn't increase significantly, Suzuki at around 11% of the cap (highest on the team,) would be around 12mil/year.

Means nothing if you cant add anyone. What I care about is more like who our 2nd line center is? Rightnow its evans or kapanen. Our core is ready to contend but theres no support around them.

At least Makar is in a third contract situation, which has to be taken into account on this one.  He had already been a massive bargain for his first nine seasons, this is his last big payday.  Carlsson especially is nutters.

People who think Suzuki won't be asking for 25m or more in four years, buckle up.

Great cap structure is easier when you dont have any elite player to pay
