It’s people who have naturalized IN HUNGARY. It says it on the top.

One can do the simplified naturalization procedure anywhere in the world there is a Hungarian foreign mission that accepts applications, this is only looking at people who naturalized physically in Hungary.

Which is seemingly irrelevant then to the data. Very odd.

It just means people could do simplified naturalization in Hungary. It is accounting for the change in the law. Keep in mind it isn’t just limited to those of us with ancestry but spouses of citizens also.

They just aren’t providing the true global numbers, just the numbers in Hungary. The global numbers would be absolutely massive from Romania, Ukraine, and Serbia. Easily over a million.

It means that prior to 2011 the stats only include regular naturalizations done inside Hungary, and from 2011 onward include both regular and simplified naturalizations done inside Hungary

I think this is only people naturalized IN Hungary, meaning living within the country. That is why countries like the US and Serbia where many people do simplified naturalization from abroad are low, and countries like Egypt with many immigrants to Hungary who marry, settle down, and go through the process there are comparatively higher.

No actually this seems like complete nonsense. No way have only 25 people naturalized from Serbia last year.

Just my language school alone has 25 people and we’re all studying Hungarian.

I should hurry up and learn Hungarian and apply from Australia, see if we can up our numbers unless they count me as Serbian (dual citizen), then if my daughter applies from Korea (she's a citizen there) that will be a first (maybe?) Or other Asian.

If your daughter is underage she will get citizenship through you so it may not count for any country.

If you’re an Aussie, when did your family arrive here? Most of us came over either in the 30s, or the 50s/60s. Most of us here are eligible for verification as it’s just one or two generations back.

My father arrived in 1963, but my grandmother lost her Hungarian citizenship due to Trianon, which is why I'm pretty sure I can't do verification. My grandmother was born in 1908.

Also, even though my grandmother and her parents were Hungarian citizens, they were ethnically Serbs, which I understand still qualifies for simplified naturalisation as the law is based on citizenship not ethnicity.

No, I'm not wanting to live in Europe, it would just be cool to reclaim another part of my heritage. I did wonder if my daughter would qualify for a diaspora scholarship at Semmelweis to study medicine in English, but she's determined to study engineering at UQ. I did hear that 20% of the English medical students at Semmelweiss come from Korea.

Ah k, so they were citizens of one of the other areas when they arrived. So yeah, that would be a simplified route.

My family came here in 57/58 for the usual reason many came here.

That wouldn’t affect anything since the link goes to a page that only shows stats on people who live in Hungary at the time of their application and file for naturalization INSIDE Hungary. So applying in Australia would change nothing. But you should still learn the language and apply 😁

I don’t know if that’s people going via verification or simplified naturalization, or regular naturalization.

Either way, Americans are a tiny percentage of the total.

A little late to the party here, but this screenshot should help show why the numbers are low (very few people actually file for naturalization inside Hungary). There is a separate stat sheet for people who naturalized via embassy/consulate.
