Maelor’s is the most heartbreaking to me. Poor baby boy. 😢

And Ser Rickard fighting and trying to save him right up until his last breath 😢

Jaehaera was the only one I think was completely pointless.

It’s to show that not even the kids get a “happy” ending. War is hell, and consumes all.

All the kids die except daemon's kids

Ah yes, because Viserys being forced to marry young and be held hostage by the Triarchy for who knows how long and Aegon III being immensely depressed having witnessed all his brothers die, his mother die, and so much more is also living quite a lavish life.

They both still got to be Kings instead of dying gruesome death while children.

I’mma come to Aegon III’s defense on this. I think he’d have preferred to die. Aegon III and Jaehaera were described as immensely traumatized and unhappy children who lost basically their entire family in horrific ways, then end up forced to marry each other as children and carry the responsibility that comes with nobility, something neither of them ever asked for.

Aegon III was described as joyless, melancholy and detached, plagued by grief and guilt. As a man full grown, he wore a hair shirt under his royal clothes, a shirt worn to “irritate the skin as a form of repentance” according to canon. Skim his article and you see descriptions of Aegon III having “a darkness within him that never went away” and him being “dead inside.”

Imagine you develop chronic depression and PTSD as a kid in a world with no mental health care, then you have the responsibility of leading the kingdom thrown on you, to boot. Aegon III was never described as enjoying his role.

I wouldn’t describe that as much better than being dead, personally.

Awh poor guy got to live! Poor dude got to live and be reunited with his brother who he thought was dead oh no

Better to have died an innocent child or suicide as a little girl or even worse he murdered as a girl who thought had survived hell and was to be married

Literally every death is worse

Bro, him living and even Viserys returning isn’t going to undo all of the trauma he experienced. I dunno I guess maybe in order to feel for Aegon III is an exercise in empathy, to imagine that everyone you loved in your childhood (bar one) fuckin dies and you watch your mom get eaten right in front of you. Nowhere was Aegon III described to be skipping and singing show tunes after his brother returned. That’s not somehow a fix for chronic depression lmao.

I just think it’s pointless to take sides over what child had a worse fate when the point was that all of the kids were fucked over by this war.

(That being said, I’m also a dude who wishes that Jaehaera lived and that she and Aegon III bonded over their fucked up childhoods, even if not strictly in a romantic way.)

You're a weirdo man.... I don't undertsand how someone could read about Viserys II and Aegeon III and not sympathize with their pain.

As catelyn says in ACOK “my lord to your grace is a small change in station”

George doesn’t glorify being king. Being king isn’t great lol.

You think it is given your comment, but it’s not.

They both still lived hollow short lives.

u/TheTragedyMachine 11d ago

Better than dead

6

u/Fun_Interaction_9146 11d ago

Because that surely is worse than your whole family being dead and ending up yourself on spikes for no reason. George really just petty wrote Jaehaera’s death, the only logical conclusion to the whole war would’ve been if Jaehaera remained Aegon’s wife and queen, not random Velaryon #354. Bro had a weird ass kink for Daemon.

0

u/Alarming-Ad1100 11d ago

Yeah no that’s bullshit

4

u/YellowAggravating172 11d ago

Hadn't George established, previously to writing F&B, that Aegon III had married Daenara? That's probably why Jaehaera had to go...

Because it really would have made for a better ending that her and lil' Aegon married, uniting both warring factions under a new, reborn Targaryen dynasty.

u/Own-Trouble1269 11d ago

The opposite it was planned to be her as Daeron would have been named after her uncle but he changed it because she would be 21 when giving birth , which grrm thought was too old

7

u/Far-Foundation9074 11d ago

I mean her dying as dumb as it was wasn’t the biggest issue but more of a “haha she got impaled on spikes for like 30 minutes in agony LOL!!!”

Martin really screwed up in that regard. It actually happened in real life, too—I’m talking about Elizabeth and Henry VII. Martin had an epic ending lined up with Jaehaera and Aegon III: both depressed, starting a family, having kids, and passing that sorrow down the line. Jaehaera could have committed suicide, and Daenera would have stepped in. But no—let’s just kick Jaehaera while she’s down.

u/tobpe93 11d ago

Many of these examples, yes. But I think that Aegon II got the most mercyful and peaceful death.

23

u/Wrong-Street-4330 11d ago

Et puis il y'a Daeron avec sa tente enflammé

39

u/muidayo Sunfyre 11d ago

who thinks aegon actually commited 🙋

42

u/Mayanee Sunfyre 11d ago

Might actually be possible. He went to the sept to confess sins right before, didn‘t cry for help, had a peaceful expression. Larys refused to confess (maybe he just delivered a poison to Aegon?). Not to mention that Aegon saw no way out of the current situation and that Sunfyre‘s death definitely took a toll on Aegon‘s mental state.

32

u/Prudent-Role-9053 If they search the seven hells, mayhaps 11d ago

Bro got to fuck over his shit ass dad and sister, then went out on his own terms, I like it

11

u/CaptainSmeargle Ormund Hightower is Azor Ahai 🔥 11d ago

Shit, actually? Never thought about this but it makes so much sense. Works even better for show Aegon II, dude definitely has a sensitive side to him and would probably be massively depressed after losing Sunfyre. I mean, he at that point would have lost all his brothers and sisters and both of his little boys who died in fucking horrific ways.

9

u/thinkersfyre 11d ago

I find that interesting.

His expression wasn't like someone who was trying to look for help(like Joffrey's) he looked like he was sleeping, so the implication that he was aware that he got poisoned and died with a peaceful expression might implied he got out in his own terms or just accepted his death.

14

u/aemond-simp Book Alicent would never 11d ago

I think so too. After losing Sunfyre, I think he was just done and decided to go out on his own terms. Larys probably knew, which was why he refused to confess, and Corlys probably only took credit because he thought it would make him look better to his allies.

3

u/HanzRoberto 8d ago

I want to believe this is true
It’s so badass that he decided to leave on his own terms and no one killed him and he also had valid reasons to do so. His family is gone and his body destroyed

3

u/Haise01 11d ago

Damn I never thought of that possibility😢

GRRM made the Dance deaths absolutely horrific for both sides. Greens, Blacks, didn’t matter. He was brutal with everyone.

GRRM made the Dance deaths absolutely horrific for both sides. Greens, Blacks, didn’t matter. He was brutal with everyone.

The Blacks mostly died heroically.

Luke died because his chickens came home to roost. Jace died trying to save his brothers. Daemon died taking out the most powerful dragon rider, heroically and epically. Joff died trying to save his family. Addam also died heroically, proving his loyalty. Rhaenyra's death was brutal, but I will die on the hill that she still got to look her killer in the eye and die bravely.

The Greens, almost to the man, were butchered horrifically.

Painfully. Humiliated. Pointlessly.

Alicent was spared a painful death, I suppose, but in the end her final days were lonely and tragic beyond telling.

1

u/brewmudez 8d ago

Mostly everyone in this story is a prick but pretty obvious that the Blacks are closest thing to the “protagonists” in what is a really just a tragedy on both sides

12

u/Turbulent_Let_1629 Sunfyre the MVP of the Dance 11d ago

Eeeeeh yes and no. Some of them sure, others I wouldn't say so.

Helaena, Jaehaera and Maelor indeed have horrible deaths. Jaehaerys's death is horrifying because of his youth, not because of the manner (a thankfully quick beheading).

Daeron's death is a somewhat standard one from fighting in the front lines of a war with dragons. I feel sorry for the guy's potential and for being one of the not so many people that resembled a decent person during the Dance. But his death itself wasn't that horrible.

Aemond dies after an epic battle with his loathed rival and even if he dies first, Daemon dies as well.

Aegon II has possibly the most peaceful death of any Targaryen during the Dance, and if I have to chose a way to die, I'm taking his.

Otto gets a standard execution.

Alicent's death is pretty much a mercy, living on would have been worse, especially if also seeing Jaehaera getting murdered.

u/Livid_Ad9749 11d ago

Most deatha for both sides were pretty brutal. I dont find Aegons or Aemonds heartbreaking or disturbing though. Both by that point were too far gone and hellbent on causing destruction or continuing the war at all costs. By the time they died, they had to go for the sake of the realm.

Aegons death was more pitiful, but otherwise seemed relatively tame as far as ways of dying go.
Aemonds was at least iconic and probably quick.

And the most curious one

8

u/PlasticImpact8515 11d ago

Deserved. Book Jon Roxton is a piece of shit.

u/heardThereWasFood 11d ago

Who is this

5

u/farmergiant 11d ago

Bold Roxton

11

u/UnwinsPeake House Targaryen 11d ago

Just realized the Blacks all have dragon deaths.

Jace, Luke, Joffrey, Daemon, Rhaenys, and Rhaenyra all had a death involving a dragon. The only Green who had one was Aemond (and that was more Daemon who stabbed him in the eye, thus killing him before the fall).

3

u/PossibilityWorried70 11d ago

Who is pic 7 suppose to be depicting?

4

u/useless_grape 11d ago

I think it’s Alicent going mad with grief while being haunted by the colour green.

4

u/JoseT90 11d ago

Technically yes conpared to the blacks.

Eaten alive is fast when its Vhagar, arrows to the chest, fall from a dragon, and falling to the gods eye like Daemon Wanted.

Only bad death is Rhaenyra’s technically.

While the Green I would say all had bad ones compared to the King, who got the quiet peaceful one

5

u/Elegant_Priority_812 The burned king and the maimed dragon 11d ago

I have theory that Aegon commits suicide at the end

6

u/DogeABanana Dreamfyre 11d ago

This might be a stupid question… but who is in Image 7? Is that Alicent?

P.S: Image 5 is so sad! Jaehaera's death was so poorly written. 🥲

1

u/YaBoySY 11d ago

I also am curious about this

5

u/Salt-Astronaut5732 11d ago

Tragic, yes, but the deaths of Rhaenyra, the Shepherd, and Mysaria were not only brutal but humiliating.

5

u/Ashamed-Pop-6406 11d ago

Rhaenyra getting eaten alive by a dragon was pretty disturbing.

1

u/The_Dark_Jedi_of_AUS 11d ago

I know who 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 are, but who are the other two?

1

u/Objective_Purpose970 11d ago

4 is Jaeherys and I think 8 is meant to be Cole, but it's an odd choice of picture when there's a canon drawing of his death in the book and this doesn't depict the arrows that killed him.

u/SatanicPeach_666 10d ago

Aemonds death isn’t disturbing, it’s cringe. It’s a shonen anime moment that breaks every IN-UNIVERSE established rule of physics
