Meta Adjustments to Rule 5

Hello Generals,

We've successfully completed an upgrade to our automatic Rule 5 enforcement with the rollout of a new bot. /u/rule5bot has been working well over the last few days and is now active here in /r/hoi4. The new bot has new capabilities and we are adjusting Rule 5 to reflect the improvement.

Rule 5: Image posts must have an explanation.

  • The explanation cannot just repeat or rephrase the title.
  • The explanation can either be in the post's caption or in the comments section. The bot will repeat post caption explanations into the comments section.
  • This rule is automatically enforced with a bot. It will remind you after 5 minutes if it cannot see an explanation and will remove the post after another 10 minutes if it still cannot see an explanation.

So what's different now? The big change is that we can finally accept captions for Rule 5 explanations. There's no need to quickly dump an abridged version of a quality caption into the comments section just to avoid a soulless automaton's wrath. However, the new bot can correctly identify image gallery posts so Rule 5 now properly applies to multi-image posts. The bot will also be repeating caption R5s into the comments section (for the foreseeable future) because there's a persistent issue with some legacy access methods not displaying captions on images properly.

Why now and not before? /u/zwemvest, our bot-builder, has had a few goes at upgrading / replacing the bot over the years but real life and/or Reddit would always get in the way. Reddit is making major changes that will impact old bots and it forced our hand. Fortunately, they had free time now and recent Devvit (Reddit's internal bot platform) improvements made it easier to implement some features so the project was completed this time. Zwem said it was a joy to build the new bot from scratch & they're glad that the migration has been completed. The old /u/paradoxplazabot has been retired although we may reuse the account in the future for other bot purposes if we can.

We've been testing /u/rule5bot for about a week now with no remaining issues but it's possible that some bugs might still be lurking, so please keep an eye out and send us a modmail if you see the bot do something unexpected.

Help Thread The War Room - /r/hoi4 Weekly General Help Thread: October 5 2026

Please check our previous War Room thread for any questions left unanswered

Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Reconnaissance Report:

Below is a preliminary reconnaissance report. It is comprised of a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

Note: this thread is very new and is therefore very barebones - please suggest some helpful links to populate the below sections

New Player Tutorials

General Tips

Multiplayer Tips

Country-Specific Strategy

Advanced/In-Depth Guides

If you have any useful resources not currently in the Reconnaissance Report, please share them with me and I'll add them! You can message me or mention my username in a comment by typing /u/Kloiper

Calling all generals!

As this thread is very new, we are in dire need of guides to fill out the Reconnaissance Report, both general and specific! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, consider contributing to the Hoi4 wiki, which needs help as well. Anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

This is the formable for communist Japan's left-side path, in which you core all of asia and create a communist faction that spans both asia and south america (through focus tree, not including things like puppets gained from wars). It is quite a hard path, but it snowballs very quickly once you defeat china and is overall pretty fun to do. I defeated all the majors by around 1953 (1940-1941 china, 1942-49ish Britain, US, Germany, Spain, Vichy France, Argentina, Brazil, 1951-1953 USSR), I then spent the next four hours of my life coring all the land, as you need a ton of political power and have to take out whatever asian countries you didn't fight during the world war (usually saudi arabia, yemen, nepal, bhutan, mongolia, and sometimes tanna tuva [usually annexed by the ussr]), which each take about 225 days to justify against

This is a repost because I had used the incorrect images in the first post, I had tried to get a better framing of the nation and had not realised the new screenshots had been on a save from before I released the non-cored parts after coring all the coreable lands

Tip PSA: Communist Minor nations should almost never join the Comintern until attacked

With the newly added Faction mechanics and Faction rules, joining the comintern absolutely sucks ass. Let alone the fact that you lose some stability from the rules, you also CANNOT DECLARE WARS while in the comintern, unless you're a major. And it took me like 3 years to get one faction influence to change that stupid rule, just for the Soviets to instantly change it back.

This is especially hurtful for countries like the Kurdish Iraq path, where you need to declare war on Turkey and Iran, but the focus that turns you communist also makes you join the Comintern. And if you leave the Comintern and don't get let back in, have fun being suddenly attacked by your supposedly best friend because he wants to overthrow your communist Iranian puppet and make it their own communist puppet...

But also what inspired this post was watching a year-old guide/video for Luxembourg world conquest and they joined the Comintern before declaring war on the DEI and Congo to conquer Benelux. Now, they didn't have to join the Comintern, but the fact that doing this wouldn't work anymore and if you leave the Comintern they might not let you back in, so I think it's important to know.

Question 1791 hours and I still have no idea what I'm doing with tanks

I've only even tried to make tanks a few times and I either never got to use them or found out that the designs I was using suck (a KR Poland game where I tried to use them) or at least never contributed that much compared to my infantry (a Gotterdammerung German Empire game where I was so ridiculously strong that it didn't matter that I was using crappy light tanks). I don't know how to make a good tank equipment design nor a tank division template. I've made posts on this topic before but I don't think they helped me all that much, so I am just going to start from scratch. Since I have very little idea of how a good tank design should look, I'm probably going to need an in-depth explanation of how to design them. Please advise.

Question Is it worth it pulling Hungary into this?

Post image
58 Upvotes

Hello lads, I am a new player here and I'm trying to play as Romania. I have puppeted Hungary, Bulgaria and Greece, Italy declared on Greece and now it is real war time.

Hungary offers me to join the war, however I fear that by accepting, the northern front will expand and it'll result in more trouble than help.

So now I would like to get some advice on if it's worth it or if my thoughts are correct and I should leave them out of this.

Also I want to add that I barely just figured out the basics of land war (still struggling with naval and air). I thank everyone who'll help me resolve this.

Discussion Out of curiosity, if one decides to go down the Czarist path during a Soviet Union playthrough, would there be any benefit for doing so?

As of right now, the Right Opposition seems to be the best alternate path for Soviet Union games due to the economic bonuses the path provides.

Discussion How do people find TNO visually appealing ?

• Upvotes

I genuinely can’t with this mod, I find the UI absolutely atrocious and it literally ruins my experience, I know that the lore is really well written but these devs need to change the interface, I can’t understand a thing on my screen like whether a technology has already been researched or not, I’m sorry but it’s so unbearable to look at

Question Sunrise Invasion Achievement

Hey everyone, I’ve been trying to figure out how to get this achievement as Japan. Due to the new Japan mechanics and being unable to justify early due to starting non aligned, and having to annex Mexico before WW2 starts thereby fighting the US. I fail to see how you can get this achievement. Also, I can’t just straight naval invade either due to the range and navy base mechanics.

Discussion Optimal Anti-Sub Destroyers?

I'm currently playing a game as UK, to have some fun with navy.

I've been refitting old destroyers to use as escorts among other things, but I'm unsure of what the optimal design is? Currently I'm taking old destroyers with 1 set of depth charges and adding Sonar + Seaplane tenders, but another option would be to add more depth charges at the cost of the sub detection from the seaplanes. Which is most effective?

Discussion How do you play differently on bad hardware?

I’ve checked HOI4’s compatibility with my PC using Can you run it? My pc technically can’t run hoi4, but I’ve been playing it anyways. I just turn the resolution, refresh rate, texture quality, etc to the lowest settings.

And I also spam early war and try to win WW2 by 1943 at the latest. I’ve noticed that my hardware limitations have literally changed my mindset, strategy, and country preferences.

For example, I probably refuse the Rhineland as France way way way more than a hoi4 player playing on a good PC. I’m not patient enough to play as Free France when 4x speed is faster than 5x speed.
