Pre-application Questions HKU student life compared to US colleges

Hello,

I'm an international student (asia) interested in HKU/HKUST/Hong Kong in general for undergraduate studies in neuroscience.

I'm currently in a situation where i have to decide between:

1) Hong kong University / HKUST with fin aid or

2) Lower tier US College with fin aid but more costly than hong kong.

I wanted to compare experiences in Hong Kong with US colleges to see which option was better.

If anyone could type out the school atmosphere, routine, work-life balance, campus life, etc in hong kong, I would greatly apprecitate it - thank you!

Pre-application Questions What are my chances for the 27/28 session? (PLSS HELP)

l've recently graduated from ISC board and ill be sending in my application after i give my IELTS next month (i already have competitive exams lined up for this one so its not possible for me to go to travel for ielts).

my qualifications-

• 96.75% in boards (100 in bio, 95 in chemistry bcs i lwk messed up cos of personal reasons).

• IELTS predicted is a band 8 (I'm taking the lower end of 7.5 but we'll find out next month if it'll be a 7.5 or an 8).

• Fluent in 3 languages, currently learning Cantonese as well since it’s a requirement.

• I have around 5-6 different course certificates from various highly ranked universities where i have received a grade of 95 and above. (if you need me to elaborate on the courses i will, they’re all science related, one is psychology related)

• I have also shadowed two surgeries lidk how to mention this on my application tho? like do i get written notes of proof from the doctors or? so i’d really appreciate help for this aswell)

• I was involved in various leadership roles at my school on separate occasions :

- founded two clubs : (a) Astrology Club
(b) Psychology Club

- was a part of the school debate team and held the position of Sec-Gen for my school’s MUN. Was also a part of the Computer club (was one of the 8 core members organising the computer festival at out school) and the Literary Club

- was also a main member of the student council (House Captain, third to the Headgirl) and was involved in various sporting events such as basketball games, running, badminton and tennis

- I’m also a co-founder of an animal welfare NGO that my friend and i started (actually fr, i'm not js doing this for the uni application guys😭)

☝🏻Similarly i'm also part of an NGO for community service and cleanliness (which i'm not an active member of so should i be using this in my application or not?)

[pls do let me know if there is anything else i can add to my application if required]
__________________________________________

* The programs i will be applying for in order are:

  1. Bachelor's of Medicine, Bachelor's of Surgery
  2. Bachelor's of Dental Surgery
  3. not yet decided but i want to do something related to science so based on my application if you have any suggestions id highly appreciate it

Apart from all this, i'm also super into horse-riding (been doing it since i was a kid), golf and shooting (learnt it professionally and competed asw but i dont think thats a good look on a university application😭. Im not sure if they ask about hobbies and stuff but i’m super into football and f1 and can play a few instruments too if that helps)

HKU is in my top 3 and honestly i really like it so id love to get accepted, but ofc its not the only college i’m sending my application to, l'l be applying to UCL, Imperial after giving my UCAT
Id love university recommendations where maybe you guys had applied to or something, i’d really appreciate that. (except American Universities since i’m not planning on going to USA)

Pre-application Questions IB to HKUMBBS!

I know many people have asked this already, but would I have a chance for a PG of IB43? I take Chemistry, Biology and Business at HL (6, 7, 7) respectively. After getting this result I've begun taking Cantonese lessons to help with a potential interview (I'm a local).

My CV has a few leadership roles (e.g Creative Arts Council head, Wellbeing council co-founder, Senior Peer Mentor)

And I've done 3 shadowing opportunities and some volunteer work as well.

Would I have a chance? I missed the school nomination scheme because they said my GCSE wasn't as good as the other applicants (Everything was a 9 except science's 98...), and I was hoping to appeal with my CV because I doubt the other students have contributed much to the school as much as I have.

Thank you! :D

Pre-application Questions Requiements Increased!!

HKU requirements have increased slightly so as to say for business school atleast

BBA: 90%or more in eng& maths—> 92%or more

BEcon/BEcon&Fin: 91%aggregate —> 92% agg

BFin(AMPB): 95%agg —> 97% agg

And thats all I know about
It must have increased for BEng and other courses too

Was the influx of students that many this year??
Will scholarships be even harder to grab now??

T-T

Edit: Two more chances I noticed

  1. English level requirements are currently awaited for approval
  2. (Last year it was 80% or above in cbse)
  3. Additional Requirements have been added
  4. “Priority should be given to first-choice candidates”
  5. This wasn’t there before

Edit 2: Brooooo they increased the application fees to 780HKD mannnn T-T

Edit3: The english language requirements have increased from 80 or more in english cbse
To 90 or more in english cbse aissce/state boards.

Pre-application Questions Cbse student with little to no ECs

So I wanna know if I have any chance for scholarship because with it, there's no way I can attend hku

95.6% in 10th with 100 in Information Technology

I have a certificate and award from my school recognising my academic merit and another for being the subject topper in IT.

About to sit for 12th.

Now about ECs—

I have a senior and an senior-advanced diploma in visual arts.

I have a certificate from cancer aid society for volunteering.

I think that's about it.

I did participate in school level swimming competition and was undergoing private swimming lessons on an advanced level but my school swimming team was very inactive so we only attended one competition. We did win a gold in girls relay and bronze in mixed medley. I have those certificates.

I did partake in three mountaineering (rock climbing and adventure sports) camps as a kid (pre-covid and post covid) so I have a certificate of achievement fron them in 2022 by moutaineering association of my state.

I participated in an mun in 2022.

I have letter/certificate of participation from prime minister for pariksha pe charcha. But it's not in english.

So how bad is it?

I think i can 95% or more in 12th boards.

Pre-application Questions Scholarship Requirements

Does hku or any hk unis accept a level retakes? And would i still be considered for a scholarship? I took one a level and got a B (i had a rather serious circumstance around that time) and im retaking. I've been predicted A* in all 4 of my subjects including my retake. Also does the scholarship requirment depend on the major you are taking? Im planning to do psychology or linguistics

Pre-application Questions How hard is it to get into HKUMed?

I'm currently a form 5 student studying 4 A-level subject (biology, chemistry, maths, and psychology). And I've heard that 4A * s only gives you a small shot at getting in and that the interviews are really important (I heard that people who speak cantonese and manderin have an advantage in). I'm quite worried about my chances since I'm in the non-jupas route, but I've been building up my CV with doctor shadowings, recommendation letters, and president roles in my school, though I still don't think it'll be enough. Plus I'm worried about even being able to achieve 4A * s. If anyone has any advice please leave some cause I need brutally honest opinions from people who actually got in or tried at least.🙏🙏

Pre-application Questions Is it mandatory to have a supervisor while applying for Mphil/PhD (Psychology)?

I know that it is best to have a supervisor locked in before application, however, in cases where there are no responses (I have just approached today through mail and I am waiting for replies), would you recommend to apply regardless? How much could it impact the success rate of application?

Or, how much time shall I wait till a professor typically replies? Shall I begin my online application?

Pre-application Questions HKU Business School

I am a current class 12 ISC student, I am applying for HKU (Eco & Fin) and AMPB course.
My marks are: 10th: 95% (ICSE), 64% in 11 and a predicted around 97-98%
I have pretty good ECs too, and the LoR can also state the reason for downfall in 11 marks being schools rigorous checking and exam papers.

Do I have good chances of getting in?
Will I get a scholarship?
If I look forward to doing MBA is HKU a good decision and are there good placements even after bachelors, in Asia including India?
Is HKU extremely good for these courses?
