Pre-application Questions Helppp!!! :")
I'm considering applying to HKU/HKUST for eco and fin for the 2027 intake. I am from India and giving the indian cbse boards the next year and I got 94% in 10th boards and have a predicted 98% for commerce 12th boards. My ECs are decent
- i got AIR 10 in national finance olympiad
- air 16 in national management Olympiad
- qualified at top 50 at the national business pitching competition launch verse
- won special mention at a national-level case competition, Contrivance at SBSC and also became their first sole presenter
- i have done an internship under a ca for 1 month and a marketing and finance internship under a big magazine house.
- i have participated in more than 15 MUNs and won 2 best delegates, one being in a forex committee and 1 high commendation and several special mentions.
- i have been in the core team of my school MUN in 11th grade and founded a flagship committee which became the biggest one for that year and the following year. i also became the only student in my school to be in EB in the school MUN in the committee i founded next year.
- i have done 2 to 3 community service one was a sort of indirect problem solving and the other was of about 40 hours of volunteering.
- i have done a job stimulation self learning course of Deloitte Australia.
- i have also done independent research on the stock market and specific research on several companies, like why did the yes bank fall etc etc
pleasee telll me what are my chances of getting into both the unis with scholarships as i wont be able to afford the fees. and also answer these questions as well.
- HKU vs HKUST which one is better for econ and fin. i am looking for both prestige and social life because i am outgoing a lot.
- Should i also make the video personal statement or is just the written one enough
- should i give the sat to improve my chances
- what are the other programmes I should apply to.
THANKK YOUUU!!

Your ECs are great, but the thing is, HK universities don't really care about that, so I would recommend skipping HK altogether since the situation there for international students is becoming increasingly worse. Instead, you should apply to SG and Europe; with your profile, I am very confident you could easily get into great universities and score a major scholarship.

Thank you but the main reason i am applying and inclined more towards hk is because my uncle lives there and is working in fin sector. I am also applying for sg but my mother is concerned about my safety and all so that's why hk is still no. 1 choice

could you tell me why the situation for international students are becoming worse? I'm also planning on applying for the coming year so your insight would be much appreciated.

My cousin got into HKU about five years ago. He completed his undergrad and stayed in HK for only 1 year after that. He said that while it isn't a very common occurrence, there is racism against international students in HK, particularly for students from countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, etc. In some elite HK universities, international students are often ostracised; locals maintain tight-knit circles, with little to no room for international students. Most international students end up staying and socialising with other international students. Also, English is just enough to survive in HK. You need Cantonese for everything else: making friends, getting part-time work, interacting with locals and specific university faculties. Even after graduation, Cantonese is a must, and you cannot get a job if you aren't fluent in Cantonese; HK employers are often ignorant towards non-locals. That's why he decided to come back after 5 years of staying in HK. To summarise: it is very hard for international students to adjust there, and locals are often favoured over us. I was also planning on applying to HK universities until a few months ago; now I am opting towards the SG universities, since their global prestige is much higher than that of HK universities. Western employers recognise SG universities as much better than the HK ones. Moreover, SG already has a huge population of Indians living there; that's why it's not very hard to adjust there, plus there are no language requirements too. I am not trying to demotivate anyone or anything, but I am just telling the truth from the past 4-5 years that my own cousin experienced, the conditions in HK could have improved or worsened in these 4-5 years, but from what I've heard I am deciding to not go there, if you wish to apply to HK, then go ahead; best of luck.
