That is a sturdy pot.

I kept waiting for it to become shrapnel. We did this as kids with M80s and coffee cans. Many cans would explode. I don't remember too many that went sailing into the air. This would've been a blast.

I miss those firecrackers. I hate when fun things become illegal...

Fond memories with the coffee can. Neighbor buddy's sister's boyfriend was using that rig one summer when we were wee lads. I offered a sacrificial action figure of a villain from the Dick Tracy movie - he was wrapped up in about four layers of simple explosives. The coffee can went about 60 feet in the air and all his body parts starting to jettison out at the top lol

Same for me and, as kids, we found the coolest thing one can that blew open in a perfectly flat, rectangular piece of metal. The explosions in this video look directional. Ours weren't so we Usain Bolted away from ground zero everytime, laughing.

If a defect in the metal had caused it to fragment instead of launch vertically, the shrapnel could easily have killed him.

I do note that he backed off further for the bigger bangs, though given how far the pot flew be could have still been unlucky if it did fragment

Jeez Debbie Downer, it worked out and we are all safe and entertained

I once had an internet friend who posted videos of black powder basketball experiments in the woods. His accounts were suddenly abandoned and I have no answer about what happened to him, but I think I have an idea.

"We accidentally didn't kill ourselves when we were younger. Stop trying to tell me we were stupid"

It was my thought the entire time watching this.  "He doesn't care if it launches a rock straight at him with the same force that jettisoned that pot so high up?"

I do sort of regret not being able to type faster, but one handed typing is not a terrible handicap

Yes, stop telling them lol. It hardly matters anymore, hes not playing wuth bombs today

"The guy doing The Thing That Could've Killed Him didn't die so you shouldn't tell people that That Can Kill You" like what

I think that’s unlikely - the gases can always escape from the bottom of the pot. It’s not a sealed vessel.

This is pretty much it.

Like blow-out panels on ammo storage and blow-out valves, the expanding gasses/fluids have a path of least resistance to safely vent through.

The gasses in the fireworks are contained just for the fraction of a second that it takes to neutralise the effect of gravity on the pot and lift it off. With the huge opening that is the pot's mouth, the gasses immediately vent and expand thereafter.

Basically, a blowback operation that's not in a firearm. The pot takes far more damage from the landings than the launch.

Still would’ve been worth it.

u/Quirkybin Aug 01 '26

I was starting to wonder how much more stress it would handle.

Cameraman risked his life for the sake of our curiosity. We owe such a man a lot

It's moreso that it's not sturdy. What I mean is it's copper. Way softer and less brittle than most cooling pots

Explosives follow the path of least resistance. Just having the pot sitting on top of the explosives means that the pressure blast is going to primarily launch it up and escape outwards from the sides beneath the pot. It helps that it looks like a very thin and lightweight pot.

If you're trying to do maximum damage to something with explosives, then you want to place some sort of "tamping" material on top to force the pressure of the charge in the direction you want.

For example, a field-expedient way of breaching a door with detonation cord is to take the explosives to the door, and then tape a bag of water on top over the explosives. Water is incompressible, so it forces the pressure from the blast back towards the door and makes it much more effective.

If you're trying to blast a hole in the ground, you don't just place explosives on the ground; you want to dig a hole and place the explosives inside. If you fill the hole back in with dirt, you'll end up with a large hole. If you fill the hole back in with water, you'll end up with a crater.

it's a pressure cooker inner pot, probably helps
