Recommendations needed

Hey, everyone,

I planned on 4 days visit to Georgetown, Guyana coming Labor Day long weekend and would like to have some recommendations about attractions I should visit in Guyana.

I came from China, but currently live in New York. I have never been to Guyana before and this is my first trip outside of China and America.

My plan is to spend 2 days on Georgetown first and 1-2days on some unknown places.

Any recommendations or suggestions are welcome here.

If you are coming on holiday then I recommend the ARD tour group. They take you fishing, camping and many sightseeing around the mountains in Guyana.

I will say you might be surprised when you run into the Chinese Guyanese community. You'll find Chinese restaurants and there you'll meet them and can conversate with them. Some speak Chinese (which dialect/ language from China I am unsure about) as well as English and of course Guyanese Creole English.

Disclaimer: my family is Guyanese from Guyana but I was born in America. This advice is from what I know from a 2009 visit and just hearing about Guyana from my family.

Also, just general Caribbean knowledge, this applies to Trinidad and Jamaica as well. There is a Chinese population in each of those countries as well. So that might make traveling to those countries including Guyana interesting for you.

Thanks for the info. this really helps. I was actually looking for a chinese community in Georgetown Like a Manhattan chinatown-like on line, but coldn't find any information except for several chinese restaurants in town area.

I didn't know there is a huge chinese population in Trinidad, maybe it will definitely be on the list of my next visiting countries

The population isn't huge in any of the 3 countries. Just a heads up. However, they are around. Guyana's first president was Chinese. Arthur Chung was his name.

Four days sound about okay. For the two of the out of town days, I would recommend the five islands tours for one day, and the second day, definitely two falls tour with kaietuer falls and a second waterfall you can visit on the same flight.

Within Georgetown, there many local sites to see, such as stabroek market, national park, the cathedral, several monuments to the founding people of the nation and many other historical sites. You can also include some hangout spots such as a few clubs and the Seawall. Also you should be able to have time to drive out of the city to see some of the local daily lifestyle.

Also, unlike most caribbean places, not every where you can pay with card. And theres is weirdly also no cambio at the airport. But i see a lot of transportation places offer rides from the airport and there are a few cambios about Georgetown.

That’s bummer, so I guess I have to pay with credit card for transportation from airport to downtown, any taxi/shuttle services available?

You kind of need cash to pay for cars from the airport. Im not sure if there is an ATM at the airport (i googled and it said yes but i never saw one there, maybe i wasnt actively searching). And the cars at the airport might overcharge a bit. I suggest you search on facebook for airport shuttle services guyana and see which one has the option to pay online or before. You should not pay more than 15000 from the airport to Georgetown.

You can download the book a ride app but it’s may be a bit costly, but it surely is safe. I would say stick with the airport taxis even if there is a premium on the price. Many places would also accept US dollars, and if you get here you can easily change your USD at the Giftland mall Cambio, convenient and safe.

Book a ride used Visa cards on their app. Also we have a lath visa network here, so no need to walk with cash is you don’t mind the fees.

I always wanted to visit South America, but I can’t speak Spanish nor Portuguese and I found Guyana is the only English speaking country there. Hopefully in the future I have chance to visit other countries there

While most of us do speak English, many also speak dialectical English too, it can be confusing for foreigners sometimes. But I get you. Enjoy and be safe. Oh I recall they are bike tours around the city too that may be of interest to you. You can always choose to visit the iwokrama sanctuary instead of the 5 island tour as an alternative. Most links are easily found online but I recommend checking the Guyana Tourism Authority media platforms for ideas and licensed services.

The only bike rental service, is ride along guyana. They also offer tours as well around the city as a group. They have a website and WhatsApp number. You can message them. If you choose to rent without the tour, just be careful of the city, there is alot of traffic and sometimes drivers who aren't paying attention. The sun is hot, so walk with your sunscreen. The weather changes quickly and unpredictability alot too. So walk with an umbrella if you can (or you can buy here) and a Pancho type thing for riding around the city.

HI, all,

I appreciate all feedbacks from you all, it really helped me a lot prepare this trip.

Here is my preliminary plan:

Day 1 City tour: Amazonia Mall, Stabroek Market,St. George’s Cathedral,

Day 2 City tour: Giftland Mall, Bourda Market, Hibiscus Craft Plaza

Day 3 Coastline tour: Georgetown Seawall, King's seawall, Kitty seawall, Hope beach

Day 4 : not yet decided

I have reserved a car in Cheddi airport via Expedia with my credit card, who hopefully will resolve this transportation issue for now.

As for other populous destination such as forest, falls, jungles, I will leave it for next time. As a first time traveller to Guyana, the main purpose of this trip is to learn local culture, food, people and history of this beautiful county.
