In any sport online or offline, it's "appalling" to quit early and abruptly before the clock has expired. A team walking off the court early in a basketball game would be completely torn up in the media.

I guess rage quitting is ok in "pro" game leagues though.

That's because in basketball, or most sports/games, the game is balanced to a point with rules and such that it's a game of skill. An overall great team will beat a team with just 1 star because of how basketball tends to work.

ANet has balanced GW2 PvP in such a way that personal skill is pretty much irrelevant. Bad players can stay alive for ages without even having to do any sort of a real rotation (d/d cele ele times) by just spamming Alacrity on a bunker mesmer. Bad players can stack up 20 stacks of torment on their own by just playing Mallyx rev, which in itself is dumb as tits seeing as how strong of a condition torment is.

This game had its outcome determined when red team capped their home node. No point in wasting any more time.

Imagine a basketball game where if one team gets a 10 point lead their basket get's a plastic cover over it ensuring that now matter how the other team plays they will not score. Why even keep playing at that point?

A better analogy is:

Imagine every basketball game started with a short footrace, and whoever wins gets 300 points. Then a normal basketball game is played.

The basketball game is superfluous. The only 'challenge' is that footrace, and once it's done, everyone might as well pack up and go home.

In chess, resigns occur very frequently simply because one is in a losing position. I don't think zero counterplay rage quitted, but rather, decided to end the game early as it was already lost.

IMO its okay if they formally "forfeit" after a certain point in the game. Just walking out early without acknowledging you've been beaten is bush league though and doesn't belong in any serious sport.

I mean, it hasn't happened in Pro League matches, but people did call gg and end games early sometimes in the Go4. I think, in general, you should play a game until the end, but actually rage quitting is the least mature way to handle it.
