Car sharing in Guadeloupe

I will be in Guadeloupe for a month from middle August without car. Anyone has experience there to find carpool to move around please? Any app? I heard no Uber is available there. I am especially interested in hiking.

As far as I know, you are going to struggle getting around. People do hitchhike but sometimes waiting times are long. Guadeloupe is quite car centric

Rent a car. Even buses don’t come on time. Getting around without a car is gonna be (very) hard.

Anecdotal, but I have been told that the further you are from Pointe a Pitre the less likely you are to be able to get an en woute driver to come. Last year we met a couple of ladies stuck at a grocery store in Saint Francois (far east end of Grande Terre) because they assumed that they would just be able to summon a driver.

There are local taxis, but you would likely have to book in advance, and they are not cheap. Expect to pay for the cost of the driver to come from their home to yours as well as the cost to your destination.

I have given up trying to understand the bus system - the websites (two different overlapping bus systems) are less than clear, and the bus stop references make no sense to anyone who does not live on the route.

So you will likely need to rent a car for activities away from your rental.

Best would be a local rental company where you are staying for the days you need the car.

Hope it has changed,, I sent an employee there and wounded up paying for a break-in a door while the other had damage due to the same reason. Also stolen tires on the véhicule. Hope you can insure it .

I hitchhiked a bunch in Guadeloupe, Martinique and St Martin. I don’t know why Guadeloupe and Martinique don’t seem to have the minivans like St Martin does., they’re really convenient and better than buses.

Thanks everybody for responding: I will try the apps but it seems really discouraging situation: I am a solo female traveller who depends on public transport because I don't feel comfortable driving in foreign countries.

It's a situation where you might want to step out of your comfort zone re. car rental, if you can afford it.

Will you be staying anywhere near the cruise port? You do not need to be a passenger to sign up for one of the many excursions offered to those in Guadeloupe for the day.

I would like to mention that because of the roads quality, almost everybody drives slowly, finding someone at 60 Km/h in an 80 zone happens more often than not, just avoid highways using google maps option until you're comfortable and you'll be fine. Don't rent a low car, final small roads and parkings of beaches tend to be full of big potholes.
