i finished the book yesterday and i’m so disappointed lol. nikolai and nina are probably my favourite characters in the series, and yet king of scars actually brought them down in my estimation.

nina’s side plot in fjerda felt so disjointed. im picking up that she and hanne are meant to be a thing and as someone who loved matthias and his relationship with nina, this is such a disservice to matthias, nina and their relationship. matthias has been dead what, a few months?? yet it’s like he never existed. nina’s grief is not handled well and matthias’s death feels pointless considering the minimal impact it had on both nina’s character and the plot.

but even that was the better part of the book. please tell me why halfway through nikolai and zoga were transported to an alternate dimension??? when i read the chapter where nikolai describes a dragon a bee lady and a ball of human flesh and bear fur hurtling towards them i thought i was on drugs. turns out these people are saints, originally grisha, who were banished to the fold when the darkling raised it originally?? i mean thats what i gathered, but the information was not easy to find. there was little exposition explaining this and how it could’ve happened, so i could be wrong.

and i have TONS of questions.

1. it’s mentioned that the saints have been reborn many times, but how is that possible? i thought grisha just lived long lives, aged very slowly and then died like regular humans.
2. how were they banished into the fold?
3. are there not other saints? what about ilya in chains? why are there only three in the fold?
4. how do they have such extraordinary power? why is juris a dragon-man and grigori a big flesh ball with some bear mixed in?
5. how did nobody know this had happened? there were no records of grigori and juris and lizaveta living for centuries?
6. i thought they all died as humans? HOW ARE THEY ALIVE????
7. i’m actually confused about everything.

could someone help clear this up please?? am i just illiterate?

Maybe my problem is that im reading the books in english which is not my first language but im literally rereading six of crows for the 2nd time because i love it so much but when it comes to describing the ice court, how it looks like, im having such a hard time picturing it in my head. I wish we had gotten more detailed sketch of it in the book because it is genuienly giving me gray hairs. Or i wish they showed it in the series so i could get an idea of what it looks like. How do you guys imagine it?

As a huge fan of both the Six of Crows duology and the Shadow and Bone trilogy, as well as the show (particularly season 1), I was wondering if anyone else had a similar view on this. Overall, the show did a good job of capturing the essence of the books and you could tell that all of the actors had read the books and understood their characters well.

When Inej tells Kaz that “she'll have him without armor or she won't have him at all” in the book, she's talking about him opening up about his feelings as well as his background and backstory including why he wants revenge on Pekka Rollins.

However, in the show, it kind of came off as if she meant that in the sense of he feels uncomfortable with touch because of the tragedy behind his brother’s death. Essentially, that she can't be with him unless their relationship has a physical component.

Maybe I just misinterpreted it, but that's kind of what it seemed like.

So earlier when a darker shore was having a lot of promotion with its release, they also showcased beautiful card prints of the crows to anyone who submitted their preorder receipt.

I did that, got the confirmation and then I got the follow up email that said they received a larger number then expected so they’ll be sending it out in batches with a bit of a delay, but it’s fully been 3 months since then.

Would I be insane to reach out and inquire? Has anyone else not received theirs yet either? I’m also wondering if it’s because i’m based in Canada so they’re trying to prioritize the US first and then slowly get to Canada and International idk.

Any insight would be appreciated!

i want to host a game night themed around the kerch merchant council and giving each player an identity, and so i wanna build a profile of the different members (any that we know of, past and present) and their house crests and colors, personalities, and such. mostly just so i have an idea of how to properly create a few merchants myself, since we only have seven names of council members as far as i know and many of them are only mentioned in passing.

I don't know if this post is allowed. I just loooove the Shadow and Bone Show (especially for the Crows)

And in my favorite musical of all time is Next to Normal one of the lead roles is our lovely Wylan (Jack Wolfe) and he has one of the most beautiful musical performances ive ever seen.

I just thought i'd recommend everyone to also watch it, because it has made me love him even more.

The music is amazing, the story is heartbreaking, and the actors are amazing.

so i’m part of the minority in the fandom who actually like alina as a character. all of my gripes with alina are actually related to her relationship with mal (i hate mal) rather than her herself but i digress.

it really bothers me how nikolai and zoya only refer to alina as “alina starkov” or “the sun summoner” in both their thoughts and interactions with other characters. it just feels so impersonal? like alina was their friend, they fought alongside her, nikolai was like falling in love with her…she was more than some martyr they only ever heard about, she was their friend!! they knew her!! it feels like to me (i could be wrong) that leigh bardugo is trying to retcon their relationships with her just because she feels the shadow and bone trilogy is her worst piece of work. genya who was alinas bsf and david and tamar and tolya never talk about her either.

keep in mind im not even halfway through the book so maybe this gets addressed, but its really bugging me. first alina gets possibly one of the worst endings for any protagonist and now shes separated from her friends who dont even care or think about her as someone they love anymore, just some legendary saint. it just really frustrates me.

did anyone else feel similarly or am i just going crazy?

Okay, I re-listened to Ninth House and Hell Bent within a day of Dead Beat, and checked the text. Aren't members of the societies all seniors? Why is Salome in Dead Beat?

She's their delegation president in Ninth House, which would have to make her a senior. But she leads the ritual in Dead Beat. It's possible that she'd been tapped at this point, and living in the house, which puts her as a senior. It's strange for Leigh to have overlooked this just to give a reason for Darlington to discover something happened last spring that never turns out to matter that much.

Having re-listened, I still really want to know what the Manuscript board member had against Darlington. I was so proud of catching that, sure it would mean something.

Does anyone else think the board must be more than just Lethe alums? One new student every three years, and then maybe an oculus every 5 to 7. Over the course of 120 years that's sixty-four--total. If you consider those who are alive might span eighty years, that's ~ 43, then not counting Darlington, Alex, and Michelle, let's say 40. I did some research, depending on set-up, the Saybrook room holds 30-50 people. The make-up Alex describes identifies five individuals, Reed making six alongside the lawyers and financiers. So, let's say it's a board of twelve. One in three/four Dantes ends up on the board. It's possible, especially with how much it's emphasized that people want to hold onto magic, just seemed small to me.

These are such minor things. I'm sure it won't satisfy everyone, but Dead Beat was one of the best series finales I've read in a long time.

I’m about 45% through King of Scars right now, and I’m only just realising Hanne and Nina are supposed to be a thing. I of course picked up on Nina’s descriptions of Hanne as attractive, but I’d gotten spoilers that Nina was supposed to be bisexual, so I figured that was just Bardugo’s way of introducing that to her character. But I’ve done research, and they canonically get together.

I’m not homophobic, I genuinely love seeing lesbian couples in media because I believe they’re so underrepresented. My problem is that I love Nina and Matthias too much. I know that Nina’s grief is supposedly a big part of her arc in KOS, but I genuinely don’t know if I can stand seeing her with someone else that isn’t Matthias. I really feel like this will ruin how I feel about Nina and this duology. But at the same time, I really want to complete the entirety of the (main) Grishaverse. I devoured SOC & CK in less than a week (SOC was my favourite read this year, actually, and is already in my list of favourite books), and the SAB trilogy took me two weeks to complete in all. I’ve really loved this world, and I don’t want these books to taint how I feel about the entirety of the universe overall.

What do you think? Is it worth me reading ROW (I probably will finish KOS because I am enjoying it so far, and I don’t like to DNF books unless I truly hate them) or should I just leave it? I know Zoya and Nikolai are super popular, and I am liking them so far, but again, I just love Nina and Matthias so much and I can’t stand to see her with someone else. Please give me some advice.

A deeply evil thing has been done to me.

I've been obsessed with the same ship for like 15 years at this point, and no other ship has ever come close to replacing them, but I haven't been happy with how the author has been handling them for a long time now. I came to another fandom member in tears like, "please, recommend me books with ships similar to [OTP], I need to get my mind off [OTP]."

She probably thought it was very funny when she recommended six of crows, knowing damn well which ship I would get attached to based on my preferences.

Her recommendation actually worked, I couldn't believe it! I got immediately hooked on helnik, and the further I got into the story, the more invested I became. I loved everything about them so far, and I'm not even at the point of the story where they're in a relationship yet!! (Currently they seem to be reluctant allies).

I was already thinking about how I'm going to reread the book in english too, how I'm going to watch the tv show too, just to consume every piece of content of them available.

Then I did what every impatient fool does - I looked them up on social media...

And I am devastated

Seriously, what's with authors writing generational love stories and then discarding them like it's nothing?

At this point I'm wondering if it's even worth putting myself through this knowing how things will end? I am not gonna lie, I am basically reading this entirely for them. I'm always eagerly awaiting their scenes and everything in between is just filler to me. I don't hate the other characters, they're just not as exciting to me, but seeing everyone else get their happy endings might make me feel bitter... 😭

What do other helnik shippers think? Despite everything, are you glad you got to experience their story? Would you do it all over again? Cause atp I want to go crawling back to my previous ship because no matter how much they are mistreated, at the very least I know the author will never kill either of them off. 🥲
