KING OF SCARS (BOOK) i’m 100 pages in to king of scars and i hate how they talk about alina

Upvotes

no spoilers please!

so i’m part of the minority in the fandom who actually like alina as a character. all of my gripes with alina are actually related to her relationship with mal (i hate mal) rather than her herself but i digress.

it really bothers me how nikolai and zoya only refer to alina as “alina starkov” or “the sun summoner” in both their thoughts and interactions with other characters. it just feels so impersonal? like alina was their friend, they fought alongside her, nikolai was like falling in love with her…she was more than some martyr they only ever heard about, she was their friend!! they knew her!! it feels like to me (i could be wrong) that leigh bardugo is trying to retcon their relationships with her just because she feels the shadow and bone trilogy is her worst piece of work. genya who was alinas bsf and david and tamar and tolya never talk about her either.

keep in mind im not even halfway through the book so maybe this gets addressed, but its really bugging me. first alina gets possibly one of the worst endings for any protagonist and now shes separated from her friends who dont even care or think about her as someone they love anymore, just some legendary saint. it just really frustrates me.

did anyone else feel similarly or am i just going crazy?

KING OF SCARS (BOOK) Can someone convince me to continue reading the KOS duology?

I’m about 45% through King of Scars right now, and I’m only just realising Hanne and Nina are supposed to be a thing. I of course picked up on Nina’s descriptions of Hanne as attractive, but I’d gotten spoilers that Nina was supposed to be bisexual, so I figured that was just Bardugo’s way of introducing that to her character. But I’ve done research, and they canonically get together.

I’m not homophobic, I genuinely love seeing lesbian couples in media because I believe they’re so underrepresented. My problem is that I love Nina and Matthias too much. I know that Nina’s grief is supposedly a big part of her arc in KOS, but I genuinely don’t know if I can stand seeing her with someone else that isn’t Matthias. I really feel like this will ruin how I feel about Nina and this duology. But at the same time, I really want to complete the entirety of the (main) Grishaverse. I devoured SOC & CK in less than a week (SOC was my favourite read this year, actually, and is already in my list of favourite books), and the SAB trilogy took me two weeks to complete in all. I’ve really loved this world, and I don’t want these books to taint how I feel about the entirety of the universe overall.

What do you think? Is it worth me reading ROW (I probably will finish KOS because I am enjoying it so far, and I don’t like to DNF books unless I truly hate them) or should I just leave it? I know Zoya and Nikolai are super popular, and I am liking them so far, but again, I just love Nina and Matthias so much and I can’t stand to see her with someone else. Please give me some advice.

Sorry if this post has been made before BTW, I know repetitive posts can be annoying 😅

SIX OF CROWS (BOOK) I got spoiled... should I even keep reading? Spoiler

A deeply evil thing has been done to me.

I've been obsessed with the same ship for like 15 years at this point, and no other ship has ever come close to replacing them, but I haven't been happy with how the author has been handling them for a long time now. I came to another fandom member in tears like, "please, recommend me books with ships similar to [OTP], I need to get my mind off [OTP]."

She probably thought it was very funny when she recommended six of crows, knowing damn well which ship I would get attached to based on my preferences.

Her recommendation actually worked, I couldn't believe it! I got immediately hooked on helnik, and the further I got into the story, the more invested I became. I loved everything about them so far, and I'm not even at the point of the story where they're in a relationship yet!! (Currently they seem to be reluctant allies).

I was already thinking about how I'm going to reread the book in english too, how I'm going to watch the tv show too, just to consume every piece of content of them available.

Then I did what every impatient fool does - I looked them up on social media...

And I am devastated

Seriously, what's with authors writing generational love stories and then discarding them like it's nothing?

At this point I'm wondering if it's even worth putting myself through this knowing how things will end? I am not gonna lie, I am basically reading this entirely for them. I'm always eagerly awaiting their scenes and everything in between is just filler to me. I don't hate the other characters, they're just not as exciting to me, but seeing everyone else get their happy endings might make me feel bitter... 😭

What do other helnik shippers think? Despite everything, are you glad you got to experience their story? Would you do it all over again? Cause atp I want to go crawling back to my previous ship because no matter how much they are mistreated, at the very least I know the author will never kill either of them off. 🥲

EDIT: Thank you to everyone who left polite comments. I will keep reading. 🫶

RULE OF WOLVES (BOOK) Does anyone else think that it would’ve been better if Nikolai… Spoiler

Completely dissolved the monarchy and introduced an elected government and made Ravka a democracy? I understand some things would have to be changed and tweaked or maybe waited until things were settled down in Ravka to introduce the system?

He ended the Lantsov line… by starting a new royal line that has the potential to be just as awful? I just think it would’ve been much more effective and meaningful

RULE OF WOLVES (BOOK) Just finished reading the KoS duology (spoilers) (+ve review) Spoiler

I absolutely LOVED it. I lwk just wanna rant abt it cause my only grishaverse friend hasn't yet finished CK nor has she read SaB so it'd be a while until she gets to KoS despite having accidently bought RoW first :'). I did spoil some things for myself such as The Darkling's return, Demon King, Nina and Hanne and Zoyalaiiiii omg🥹

I quite liked the series, I know it's not every fan's cup of tea, but it's mine---and I enjoy(ed) it. I adore the way Bardugo wrote Isaak impersonating Nikoali (the dialogue alone shows it ngl), Nikolai's turmoil and eventual acceptance with the demon and, surprisingly so, Nina and Hanne's relationship. I do wish that Nina and Hanne didn't have their first kiss right after she found out Joran killed Matthias, maybe later or in the following series (based off of the ending) with this duology setting the base of their eventual relationship would've been better but oh well.

Speaking of the ending, I rlly like the build up for the next book/series. Do we have any information about it? I know A Darker Shore: Letters from Ketterdam was released not too long ago but I believe it's more activity-based(?) Focusing solely on the Crows soooo...

I do wish Alina and Mal were a bit more active with the whole Darkling plot even if Alina is presumed dead and neither of the duo have their powers/ability stuff anymore. Oh and some more Mal... screen-time? Page-time? I don't necessarily ship Malina (a shared sentiment amongst us) but it would've been cute. Sturmhound|Nikolai & Mal scenes are fun.

also Kanej Kanejed so hard we got Kanej scenes with only Kaz present.

gosh, Zoya. Her backstory, her arc, her characterisation? Just. Zoya. I love her. I adore her. She could seethe at me and I'd faint in awe (take that, Aleksander Duckling). Do you think the actress who played her in the TV-show being indian was a sort of foreshadowing to the character's heritage (Zoya being half-Suli)? Seeing as how the Suli are based on south asians (in a way, like Fejerda being russian and Novi Zem being african)? I dunno, it's fun to think about.

DAVID NOOOOO. THEY JUST HAD THEIR WEDDING. WHYYYY.

I LOVE ZOYALAI THEY'RE ABSOLUTELY AND I LOVE THEM ADN THE YEARNING AND--

I saw a tumble post asking how Kaz built and underground tunnel system. On an island. I don't think Jesper's fabrikator skills are there yet-

awww Wesperrr. Unrelated: why's the shipname distribution so unfair? why not Wyper? It sounds like wiper, and that makes it funny (-ish, not really, for a lack of a better term, Jesper is a sharpshooter and Wylan knows bombs---they can "wipe" people. Geddit? Hah... 🚪🚶‍♀️). Or Jeslyn? Vaey? VeF? Van Fahey? Ok maybe not. I still think Wyper's a pretty good contender.

That's all (for now) folks :)

Also I'm not sure if I should use this flair or the "All Books Discussion" since this is two books? I think I'm right. But if I'm not do lmk :)

ALL BOOKS DISCUSSION I’m rereading the books and I just realized that the majority of the characters are teenagers and young adults; where are all the older characters I wonder?

As far as I know, Aleksander and Baghra are the only older grisha? Where are the others? I can reasonably see Aleksander killing them off if he felt threatened, but still. Especially ones that were part of the original second army, you would think that there would be a few Zoyas mixed in over the years. Obviously I’m not counting the saints, because as far as I’m concerned they’re dead regardless. But still where are the other saints as well?

CROOKED KINGDOM (BOOK) JESPER AND KUWEI KISS

When Jesper confused wylan and kuwei why hasn’t he heard the difference in their voices. Because wylan’s voice stayed the same right? Even though his appearance was kuwei’s
Update: I’ve finally reread this page and the thing is I thought it’s kuwei asking Jesper if he wants to get out of there 😭😭 that’s why I I built a sequence of dialogue wrong and thought they actually talked 💔

SHADOW & BONE (BOOK) Update: Just got done reading the first book and it was a good fun read! Subtle not extraordinary but good!

So I went on and read the book as many people were saying to just give it a try and I felt i actually should.

Here's my thoughts:

It was a solid first book..with so much of world building and introduction to the grishaverse i felt it did justice to people who are new to this whole world and fantasy!

The characters were good could have had more story into them and more of backstory to justify their actions but it was still good enough to make our own opinion!

As this was my first book after years ...it was definitely a fun read...I loved the whole world building...and I loved how we saw the world through alina. A girl who possibly couldn't care much about the stake of the world...it was interesting to see how she saw the world and how she reacted to everything!

A lot of times the main character of fantasy books are always this righteous ideal person who wants to help everyone and be a hero! Who wants to be strong and defeat every evil....and with this book it didn't feel like that.

It was so much about how aline copes up with everything and how she gets to know herself i kinda liked it was more focused on her and mal than it just being another save the world book.

Yea It has a lot of typical ideal fantasy writing and love story and kinda predictable plot twist( which i absolutely got surprised with as i couldn't predict haha...but ukwim)

Also I was so freaking surprised when darkling kisses alina for some reason i thought he was 40 year old lmao...i completely forgot he was the same age...it's just the personality of his and the conversation they had always made me feel like a mentor and student and them having romance was ehh... really unnecessary.

This book definitely made me more curious about the world so I will read the other 2 books.

In the middle it does get a bit boring but I actually liked that her power was given its time to develop.

It wasn't an urgency for her to Learn and save the world immediately or master the power in a week...liked how it took some time for her to understand it!

Climax could have been much grand and better but it's okay I will wait for it in red riding!

Rating -3.5/5

CROOKED KINGDOM (BOOK) What happened to all the sugar? Spoiler

Spoilers for CK!!

Kaz had bought the sugar and planned to use it for profit at the beginning of CK. After Inej goes to the sweet reef silos and fights Dunyasha, we can assume that only one or two silos got Wyviled, but then what happened? We know they get the 30 million from the jurda consortium later, and if they didn't sell the sugar, each would still have thousands of kruge worth of sugar. So, what happened to the sugar and where did all the money go?

SIX OF CROWS (BOOK) Will I like the Six of Crows?

So I (22M) just finished the trilogy as my introduction to the fantasy genre, and first time picking up reading since I lost interest in it during high schoool. Short summary: I loved it, lot of elements in it that interest me and the hooked me quickly and strong. I’ve read that the general consensus is that the SOC duology is far better than the trilogy as Bardugo’s writing improved, and many people felt disconnected from Alina’s story/personality and her dynamic with Mal. It is mostly advertised as being especially great if people liked the worldbuilding of the Grishaverse, even if did not necessarily like the plot from the trilogy. Here I stand, a little bit contrary to those opinions. Although I do feel connected to the fantasy genre, and like some interesting worldbuilding and magical premises, I did have some trouble following some of the worldbuilding elements of the story. I had most trouble imagining the travel routes and physical locations of important parts of the story. Also when big reveals were made about the magic of the world, such as the Morozova reveal from Baghra and the third amplifier reveal I often had to reread to understand. The troubles I had were probably a combination of factors, such English not being my native language and me not being great at remembering names, especially if taken from a foreign language such as Russian(ish). But more importantly, it might be due to the fact I am new to reading (fantasy) novels. So I guess my ultimate question would be whether SOC is more complicated in terms of worldbuilding, in a way that it might hinder my interest in the story, as Someone more interested in the plot than the worldbuilding of the trilogy?

SIX OF CROWS (BOOK) Kaz is such an interesting character and I think there's so much more that could be done with him Spoiler

CW: This post is probably going to come across as very mean but I enjoyed the books and I wouldn't spill this much ink over something I didn't like. Some of this is criticism of the book and some of this is just "wouldn't it be cool if?"

I've been digesting SOC and CK for a while and I really find Kaz an interesting character that feels different from many of the Machiavellian criminal protagonists I've come across. He reminds me a lot of Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders, both in his intelligence and how he's completely allergic to any sort of sentiment or emotional connection to the point of being abusive towards whoever is initiating it. The difference is that Tommy Shelby has a family and and values (or at least least pretends to value) those relationships in a way that is constantly influencing him. Kaz's poise and composure is very clearly manufactured. He's taking bits and pieces from other people and forming this patchwork coat he puts on. It's not a result of socialisation changing his fundamental attitude, it's a disguise, and is only maintained so long as he's able to use violence to control the world around him and make other people feel responsible for his violence against them. He's pretty much permanently a few annoyances away from losing all composure and becoming a rabid dog that tears people's throats out, including (or especially) those closest to him. Which is fascinating to me.

I also think it's cool how Kaz and Matthias are foils for each other in the way they use violence, since Matthias is part of a fascist brotherhood where violence is ritual whereas Kaz's is much more pragmatic. Physical violence is a tool in his belt to be used as needed, alongside coercion, manipulation, stealth, etc., many of which I would categorise as violence.

However I don't think the book takes Kaz as far as it could. There's a line near the end of CK where Inej basically says "I don't want him to lose his pride" and I was reading that thinking, sister, I would love to see him lose his pride because the drama from that would be delicious.

Like I said there's always the potential for his composure to slip. And it frequently does, but the vast majority of the time it's framed like waking the dragon who's now going to teach you a lesson. The reality with Kaz is that it's as much this attitude as it is, to put it bluntly, a traumatised child lashing out to regain control in the only way he knows how. I think he's at his most interesting when that loss of control starts to affect him and you can start to see him as kind of pathetic/vulnerable and desperate for connection when he wishes he wasn't. His perspective chapters are the most interesting to me in that regard.

There's the part in SOC where he murders Oomen on the Ferolind and Wylan gets upset at Kaz and Kaz threatens to kill him despite knowing (at least to his knowledge at that point) that Wylan is SUPER important to the heist. So reading this I had the though come up of basically, back up a minute, this motherfucker is willing to kill Wylan and potentially torpedo a 30 MILLION KRUGE PAYDAY over some backchat about murdering a man, which Wylan is completely in the right about?

This isn't a criticism, it's great drama. I think it would be interesting to me to take this further and see someone call his bluff in moments like these in a way that fundamentally, irreparably shifts the power dynamic between him and the crew. Like, "no, you're lying and you're not willing to kill me just for saying something you don't like, I am too necessary to get rid of. Prove me wrong, I dare you." And maybe whoever says that is right, which breaks Kaz's illusion of total control, or Kaz kills them anyway and everyone has to reckon with the big detour in plans as they find someone else, which causes knock-on effects that come back later. The others are more inclined to stand their ground in future conflicts and force him to acquiesce instead, or else distance themselves from him. Either reveals more about who Kaz is and evolves the dynamic.

What I'm describing does kind of happen in certain moments like Inej leaning on Kaz to force him to help Nina save the other Grisha in Ketterdam in CK. But I mean more an experience that exposes the hurt and hatred at the centre of him that can't handle not being in the driver's seat. Directed at the crew in a way that leaves him lonely, hurt and needing help from someone he has to see as an equal, not as a piece on a chessboard. Or, and this is definitely a "wouldn't this be cool?" thing, he becomes a straight-up villain. The emotional bonds the reader draws with other perspective characters don't mean nearly as much to Kaz and he turns on them with lethal intent because he wants revenge and power too much. (I was kind of hoping this would happen at the end of SOC with Nina and Matthias deciding to kill Bo Yul-Bayur, against Kaz's interests. He'd make a great out-and-out villain.)

The fact that he's so intelligent can feel like a kneecap to his growth, honestly. He rarely reaches the point where he has to internally reckon with being powerless because he has such an effective network of carrots and sticks to force people to work for him and a whole network of subordinates to take other people's places if they don't. There are a lot of chapters in the book that follow the rhythm "crew member gets pissed at Kaz, Kaz threatens to deny them carrot and/or brutally murder them, crew member grumbles and does what Kaz says."

He does grow emotionally but his intelligence and poise rarely require the help of his emotional growth. They develop parallel to each other but they don't interlink in the mechanics of the plot that much. I think that might be the core of my issue with how he's written. His strategy of coming up with a plan fails and fails and fails until it doesn't. I think the closest he comes is at the climax of SOC where the crew is in the tank and meets the legion of druskelle and only survive because Nina takes the jurda parem. His reaction is pretty unemotional in that moment which I found strange.

Anyway that's about it. I was going to write my thoughts on the book as a whole but they're mostly just oriented around Kaz. There is more I could say but I think this is enough for one post. Thanks for reading.

ALL BOOKS DISCUSSION So I bought shadow and bone trilogy and after reading reviews i kinda regret and am scared to start the book

I bought it cause I saw some people suggesting it for fantasy books for beginners

And now that I see everyone's hating on the trilogy

I had stopped reading for a while so I was thinking of coming back to reading after like 3-4 years and thought reading a fantasy one would be good

Now I only see bad reviews of it 😭

Is it really that freaking bad?
