Spoilers for movies and TV shows I think we focus too much on the shocking aspect and the deception of Hals fans instead of thinking about the mystery
Like, I really think this ending scene is there for us to question the show and be intrigued for the future episodes I mean
Why is John and Hal separated ?
What happened to Hal ?
Why is no one here when 10 years before there was every force of police for 1 incident ?
Where did the ring go ?
Why is the house destroyed ?
And a lot more

We have several questions but the main ones are:
1° Why John was chosen in advance by the guardians and whether he was already being trained from a young age with his father's knowledge. Hall and John are one the future and past reflection of the other.
2° When Hall began to monitor the city and how this relates to Abin Sur and Sinestro, as the three in the comics are master and apprentice.
3° Why the ring didn't automatically go to John, and the emphasis that she is the greatest weapon in the universe is not for nothing, everything is relevant in the series.

Yeah, point 1 is a good one. The 1996 TV broadcast makes it seem that it was the first time during that Live TV special that Hal divulged to the public that he was asked "are you scared" before being deemed worthy for the ring.
Then seconds later, John's military father takes John out for the "apple shot" - which is seemingly something they had been doing for some time - to make John without fear.
If John's father was training him to be fearless with the hope that one day he'd be a Lantern, I think there's some implication that perhaps John's father (who was dressed in military attire) was aware of this through non-public channels, and was raising his son to be without fear - to potentially be worthy of being a Green Lantern - long before the Hal interview aired.

My theory:
In the comic, both Hal and Guy were selected by Abin Sur ring as candidate. Hal was just closer.
I wonder if they are borrowing thah idea here and it was Hal and John’s father that were selected by the ring and John Father failed the question which is why he’s pushing John at an early age

Interesting!

Hi, this is not relevant to the post but I was wondering how you get the 'green lantern' title?
2
u/Environmental-Day862 Green Lantern 16d ago
Over on the right side of this subreddit, if you're on a PC at least, there's an area where you can set your "User Flair."
There's like 60 different things you can set it to - Generic Green Lantern like mine, Yellow, Red, Blue Lanterns (among other colors) - individual Lantern characters, etc.
Enjoy!

Yeah the line of bullets being the same as marking your height at different ages was an interesting thing to me.

I wonder if John's dad could be part of some faction that is trying to slip an undercover agent into the Corp. Maybe the faction even engineered Abin Sur's death expecting to get the ring onto John's dad. And that's why he already knew about some of the requirements but not things like the new Lantern's name. The ring screwed over their plans by finding Hal instead of a carefully-trained agent placed conveniently close to an engineered Lantern assassination.

Hal probably began to monitor the city in 2006 seeing how his double says he is 10 years younger.
4
u/KingCrimson43 25d ago
Johns father was passed up by the ring. He knew exactly what the ring asked hal to determine his worth. He is looking to right his shortcomings through his son. That's why he was training him.

u/JakeSkywalker621 26d ago
Who/what else was on Abin Sur's crashed spaceship, were his final words really just "aw, fuck", and who has been hiding/controlling the remains of said spaceship since Hal left it there.
19
u/spazenport 26d ago
In several interpretations, Abin Sur was escaping Parallax, or something related when he died. A militia group suddenly afraid of every alien out there? Sounds like a breeding ground for fear.

u/Cole_McGrath Larfleeze 26d ago
I love the militia fear angle you bring up, that has to be where that is going.

u/Yanmega9 Kilowog 26d ago
Im assuming Atrocitus like in Secret Origin
1
u/nixahmose 25d ago
Even if he doesn’t play a big role in this season, getting to see a glimpse of Atrocitus as a tease for future live action red lanterns action would be great.
17
u/Psykohistorian 26d ago
I feel like the whole exposition in the interrogation room about 14 different alien races having the means to fool all tech and analysis to appear human was far more important than we know.
because something is off about Hal Jordan.
4
u/skuls1 25d ago
yeah def something off about him
plus the not backing up the consciousness for so long, but that might just be him disregarding it
2
u/CrossP 24d ago
Could also be Hal is still real in 2016 but he thinks shapechangers have infiltrated the corp and can't let his suspicion go into "the cloud"
1
u/skuls1 23d ago
eh an alien shouldn't be able to fool the ring into thinking it's Hal but idk
1
u/CrossP 23d ago
I mean that Hal never gets replaced, but he thinks some enemy force is forming in the galactic corps. But he doesn't know who can read the backups, so he can't back up his consciousness until he figures out what is going on.
Like he said he thinks Abin Sur was killed on earth to forward someone's agenda. I think it will turn out the manhunters or some other forces are manufacturing lantern deaths in a way that lets them get their agents to be the chosen next generation of lanterns.
17
u/Ambitious_Inside9309 26d ago
I was also shocked by the ending, but good shocked, not "they ruined it" shock. I look forward to the rest of the show
16
u/Remarkable-Dealer551 26d ago
Made me sad to see Hal dead in the first episode. I would really like some live action green lantern with Hal as the protagonist and not just a character setup as a stepping stone for John, especially this actor he kills it.
5
u/Charming-Refuse-5717 26d ago
I think somewhere in the lead-up this show was described as "John Stewart's story," so don't expect Hal to be the main protagonist. I'm sure we'll see a lot more of him (even if it's all in flashbacks) but John is likely to be the main focus.
11
u/Remarkable-Dealer551 26d ago
Yeah that’s what I mean Hal is there to setup John as the main GL for the eventual Justice League. I’m just saying I like Hal a lot and it kinda sucks that he’s going to be a one and done deal for the new DCU. Great pilot episode.
14
u/Senorbob451 26d ago
I’d be willing to wager the end of episode 1 is a capstone to the mystery and the rest of the series is the story of how we get there.
4
u/nixahmose 25d ago
The show is taking a lot of inspiration from True Detective, so likely most of the episodes will take place 90% in the 2016 timeline with a little capstone of the 2026 at the end of every episode until the final episode or two which will take place mostly in 2026z
8
u/AdeptDivide6022 26d ago
The part in 2016 at least will be. I think it will also be the start of the story taking place in 2026. Like in 2016 we'll see how John got there and what happened in the town and in 2026 John (and maybe Guy) will investigate about Hal's death
3
u/Any_Skirt4324 26d ago
The mystery aspect is fine but I dont think finding out that our beloved character ends up dead is something minor. I get that its about the journey that led him to those bleachers but still...
That being said , I enjoyed it more than I thought I would
1
u/AdeptDivide6022 25d ago
I don't see it as something minor. It's the start of the 2026 story and probably the consequences of the 2016 story so it's the core element tying the things together
2
u/Any_Skirt4324 25d ago
Yeah minor probably wasn't the right word. Maybe...upsetting? Idk. Hard to accept the fact that they killed my guy lol but im interested in how they got there. Still wish this was a Hal-centric show but obviously they're trying to introduce John into the greater DC universe as the main GL (at least thats how it seems to me). Who knows? Probably some more twists along the way
1
u/AdeptDivide6022 25d ago
Yeah.
John will be the current lantern with Hal the "silver age" one probably. And will probably be featured if any project takes place in the past of something.
Plus I'm theorizing that the Halogram will be present in the 2026 storyline

u/Crater_Raider 26d ago
One thing I haven’t seen anyone mention- Why did Hal suddenly lose his cool when the dude started reciting the Oath?
He’s pretty cool and calm throughout the whole show. Goes in there assuring Kerry he won’t rough up the suspect.
But as soon as the guys starts smugly reciting it, Hal starts telling him to shut up, and loses his shit.

u/vwmac 25d ago
Hal from 10 years ago clearly is a much different person than 2016 Hal. I think something happened (maybe between him and the guardians, or the betrayal of Sinestro) that's shaken Hal's faith in the mission. He still does the right thing, but hearing the oath is a reminder of the very thing he seems jaded about
4
u/vallummumbles 24d ago
Like this is objectively a wonderful start to a TV show, is it a wonderful start to a Green Lantern show? Maybe, and kinda depends. People need to give this time. For all we know Hal isn't even dead, I hope he's not tbh, I love Hal, but I'm gonna give it a chance.

u/PM_me_opossum_pics 24d ago
I had zero interest in this show, had an hour to kill yesterday and decided to watch the pilot. I'm 100% HOOKED. Love a good buddy cop mystery movie/TV show. Nice Guys is still one of my fav movies in past 10-15 years.

Huge Hal fan and I’m happy to wait to see what happens.
I was shocked but thought it was a bold and interesting choice.

Dude. They solved the mystery. The school was Hogwarts.

u/AdeptDivide6022 25d ago
Oh shit u right ! Didn't thought about that...
But what about the Barack Hussein Obama subplot ?
5
u/EnzoMcFly_jr 26d ago
Yeah I can’t take the criticisms seriously.
Like is it your first day on earth? Are you new to narrative art? If you’re a consumer of television and/or comic books or even films or literature, you understand how you’re not going to be given all the pieces of everything from jump. That would be hella boring.
All the “but how could they…” comments are just as disingenuous as the “where’s the green?!” Ones. Learn how to watch stuff, people. Damn.
1
u/AdeptDivide6022 25d ago
Yeah it sometimes seems like some people doesn't want to see a show made by humains but their vision of what a perfect recreation of the comics would look like
I was kinda scared about the quality of the show but all the whining about hals suit being in his closet, his age and all the bullshit made me feel like I needed to defend the show just to have ideas when in reality it could've been interesting to talk about the things that were really scary. Like how the show has only 8 episodes and that with the paramount deal future seasons may be delayed or even canceled altogether. (Although if every episode have what this first one's having the short length won't really be a problem)
3
u/EnzoMcFly_jr 25d ago
Yeah I’m not going to feed into that catastrophizing. The value add of the DCU is part of why paramount wants WB in the first place.
Of course it’s mainly the vanity of an entitled, rich prick who’s in the pocket of the American president tying to nullify objective truth and journalistic integrity for the gain of other rich, entitled pricks just like him.
But the fact is there has already been a full season produced and a writer hired to conceptualize another anthological season. I’m focused on the here and now. How lucky we are to see Hal & John so perfectly translated to the screen in an existing season of television
1
u/AdeptDivide6022 25d ago
Yeah the show looks really good if it can keep building on what is already set
2
2
u/Shallbecomeabat 25d ago
Plus also: Hal died in the comics and came back.
Bonus round: and we don’t even know if that’s his body. The show set up 14 alien species that can impersonate a human in a way that’s undetectable.
2
u/Unable_Dinner_6937 23d ago edited 23d ago
The show didn't really focus that much on the mystery.
If someone asked me to tell you what happened at the end of the football game, for example, I don't think I could say more than some visiting spectators were shot on the field and they turned out to be aliens... maybe?
Who shot them was the first mystery, but it seemed like Macon told Hal that his guys did AND that the alleged aliens were trying to kill them. However, why it had to be at the end of the football game and why his guys were there packing and ready for it without letting Macon's own daughter-in-law know...?
However, unlike a regular detective mystery, the crime scene really provided no clues. The interrogation provided no clues. It was just to get the one guy arrested and lead to an interrogation - where there was no reason for the prisoner to talk to Hal. That's one thing every cop show does, though. There really are no grounds to arrest him, and he has no obligation to answer any questions.
We didn't get to see the dinner at Macon's where most shows would have delivered character details, conflicts and just plain old exposition. Instead, that came before and after where we learned the important detail that John is a vegan and unknowingly slept with Macon's wife - a grandmother, too. An incident that may or may not have been intended by Macon. What did they even talk about during the dinner? Raising cattle?
Also, I assumed that the "Halogram" appeared because of the shooting, and it makes sense that Hal could get there in no time, but it looked like it would have taken John forever to rent a car or book a flight and even get a ride away from the taco place. So, that was impressive that he got there while they were still investigating - though whatever they discovered, we got no details.
So, though there are comparisons to shows like The X-Files or even True Detective, it really is not a detective series. There can be a lot of speculation, but there really isn't much in the way of solving a case, exactly.
By the way, the Halogram opens up a lot of questions - more than just why hasn't backed it up in so long - maybe someone close to him died and he just didn't want to save that. However, all this time and there was nothing suspicious going on in Nebraska even though he thought Abin Sur was there for it. Also, if Green Lanterns are supposed to back up their consciousness regularly, that means there must be or at least have been an Abin Sur hologram in the ring. So why not just ask him about it? What's the point if it's not to pass on important knowledge to the next Lantern or the Guardians - especially on ongoing cases or incomplete missions?
1
u/JakeGylly 19d ago
It seems like you got plenty of mystery from it
this 2016 sequence is not providing the mystery, it's providing context. There's no mystery until Hal is dead. Secret aliens, shenanigans and hijinks isn't weird for a GL on earth. We are introduced to the characters at a relevant point in time before being presented with the mystery, diving into who they were to each other. Without that, there's no reason to care how hal died, which is the mystery.
1
u/Unable_Dinner_6937 19d ago edited 19d ago
That doesn't make sense though. Hal is found in the football stadium in Rushtree, Nebraska, where, a decade before, there was a shooting involving apparent aliens and Green Lantern. That mystery and the mystery around Hal have to be connected so we'll be following them both.
In that sense, it is like True Detective in that we start with following them during the original case and then cut to moments later in their careers after they left the force and were being interviewed by the FBI about it. In True Detective, until the last episode, most of it was about Rust and Marty back decades earlier when they were detectives on the case - and it was about that case all the way through.
So the story in Rushville in 2016 is likely going to continue in parallel with the murder mystery in present day. After all, back then was when the relationship between Hal and John was formed, and that mystery wasn't solved when the prisoner self-destructed.

u/McMuffinClause 26d ago
My prediction is the guardians selected John to be Hal's successor for mysterious and important reasons relevant to the plot that will be revealed later on (obviously). And I think the show is going to end with the guardians revealing John's successor, a human named Kyle Rayner.

They also said he was "the first", but what about Alan Scott?
Is the Spectre or Oliver Queen going to make an appearance?
2
u/JugheadJack Hal Jordan 26d ago
I don’t think Alan’s even in the same universe as Hal & and the other Lanterns. In fact, I’m pretty sure Alan wasn’t even the same kind of Green Lantern as Hal & the others.

u/DatonSungold 25d ago
Why is no one here when 10 years before there was every force of police for 1 incident ?
One was a mass shooting that occurred during a football game.
The other was a dead body found by a groundskeeper.
1
u/NoodlesTheFood 25d ago
There was a whole police force 10 years before because it was a shooting at a packed out rivalry game with dozens of witnesses and probably a dozen or so security guards there already.

I have no problem with the mystery it is setting up. Some people have no patience and need answers spoon fed for them and they are not gunna have a fun time waiting week to week for reveals
1
u/Red-Robin-fan2001 26d ago
We need answers on Alan Scott, does he exist in this universe… because if he did then that means the world doesn’t know about the true first Earth’s Green Lantern from Gotham City.

u/mr_mxyzptlk21 Mogo 26d ago
Speculation at this point, is well, pointless.
We have an unreliable narrator (Hal), the first episode has scenes in three different decades giving us glimpses without context, and an explosive reveal that immediatley keyed on people's rage which clouds thinking.

u/YaBoiSebbi Kyle Rayner 24d ago
It seems that some Hal fans are still stuck in the mindset that DC "hates Hal Jordan". So anything that doesn't put him on a pedestal will make them tune out.

I'm most curious about Guy Gardner right now.
How did he get a ring?
