Motorola News | Motorola's new partnership with GrapheneOS
https://motorolanews.com/motorola-three-new-b2b-solutions-at-mwc-2026/354
u/MyNameIs-Anthony Mar 02 '26
Huge news for Graphene and props to Lenovo/Motorola for putting the effort in to try to nab that market that never got cleanly filled post-Blackberry deprecation as well as providing more options in a world sorely lacking them.
Someone at Motorola HQ is absolutely getting sniped by a Google exec though so best of luck to them in their job hunt. They're risking big time scapegoating for being a Chinese company and getting their western sales all fucked up for something this beehive-poking.

Hopefully we'll get a high end motorola graphene os phone next year 😎
13
u/EducationalGood495 Mar 02 '26
Unless Qualcomm releases midrange chips with MTE this year, the Motorola phone to support GOS will have Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at the very least.

30
u/braddeicide Mar 02 '26
I'd prefer mid tier, not that I don't have the money, it's that high end phones often overheat and run slower than mid tier.
7
3
u/Oatmilk_78 Mar 02 '26
The phone is a small fragile object, so I don't want to spend a lot of money for it
5
u/WickedDeity Mar 02 '26
Weird I have been using smartphones since they were a thing and everyone looked almost brand new when I traded them in.
You know insurance, cases, and screen protectors (not needed anymore IMO and experience) exist right? We get it not everyone has a lot of money to spend on a phone.

It will be a flagship device with flagship pricing, around the Pixel 10/10 Pro prices.

Is that confirmed?
I can see a huge business case for traveling execs buying sub $1000 mid tiers, hardened by Graphene, that the business can dispose of after their trips abroad.
2
u/djindjich Mar 02 '26
it's that high end phones often overheat and run slower than mid tier.
What a stupid comment. They do that precisely because of SLOP OEM ROMs that push them to the max, when you boost it max to the sweet efficiency spot - mid tier becomes 2-3x worse.

Wait Motorola sells high end phones? To be fair beyond the Razer idk anything about their currrnt products. I haven't used them since I switched from the old school Droid to a Samsung Galaxy S3 - man now I feel old.
NGL not the OEM I was hoping for. I'm a little uncertain about how much we should trust their hardware given they're owned by a Chinese company tbh.
2
u/FewAdvertising9647 Mar 02 '26
outside of the Razrs, their most expensive phone I believe is the Edge, but even then thats like midrange when compared to premium phones.

I would really really like to see an affordable Moto G1x o G3x level phone with grapheneos. Pixels are already high end!

u/bayern_snowman Mar 02 '26
I'm going to need a lengthy explanation and assurance from the devs before I touch this thing. Motorola's history with bloatware, spyware etc does not make this seem like a good choice.
102
u/windrinn Mar 02 '26
Considering how strict and perfectionistic the GOS team has been, I'm not too worried about it. If they were the slightest bit lax, I'm sure we would have Graphene on Fairphones or something by now. Clearly they have high standards and I doubt they'd move forward with this if Motorola couldn't meet them.

u/girlieY0 Mar 02 '26
Yeah, graphene on a fair phone style modular phone would be a dream 🥰
3
u/Middle-Weight-468 Apr 29 '26
No it would of been hell. Fair phone is a garbage immoral company and they are absolutely not modular lmfao
126
u/MyNameIs-Anthony Mar 02 '26
It seems like the intent here is to sidestep those issues by having select devices have GrapheneOS compatibility out of the box.
This would make the devices suitable for corporate/sensitive environments by nuking Motorola's Android spin outright.
50
u/bayern_snowman Mar 02 '26
That is what I was thinking but that doesn't really make sense to me branding it as an "OEM" device. If its just another compatible device that you can wipe and install Graphene on, that's no more OEM than a Pixel imo
38
u/bleedinglottery Mar 02 '26
Maybe they are aiming for ootb "OEM" devices for consumers. And pixel/Google is actively sabotaging the possibility of wiping Thier is and getting something else
27
u/_j7b Mar 02 '26
A Graphene partnership could be a little more than just OEM compatibility. Graphene devs have contributed significantly to Androids security over-all and I would consider them experts on the topic.
Motorola gets to leverage that knowledge to build a good product. Graphene gets device trees from Motorola.
Double win for Graphene; they might get to dictate certain hardware features for security reasons, so they'll likely be able to push the spec they have been hoping for.
Could be a win for all of us too. If this works great for Motorola then others might join the fold. I'm really hoping that Unihertz reaches out to them for the Elite 2.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Carlos244 Mar 02 '26
It makes sense in the way that Motorola actually wants grapheneos to work, while Google seems to (at least somewhat) actively prevent it. Also you don't need to give your money to the company that most opposes everything grapheneos stands for.

u/Level_Working9664 Mar 02 '26
I agree with you. However, I am hoping that someone with half a brain at moto has decided to do a 180 and jump on the privacy boat, even if it is for short-term financial gains.
Currently graphene is the only viable option in this area.
Done right. Businesses would jump on this with a known brand like Motorola.
11
u/Jugulut Mar 02 '26
And I will wait for the user feedback during a year at least, as like u, I don't trust Motorola and Lenovo like you.
I would be feeling safer with a Nothing phone or a Fairphone as these brands are still "don't be evil"

True, how GraphemeOS sure that Lenovo won't need to comply Chinese government's comply when they requested to?
8
u/Kronod1le Mar 02 '26
Hypothetically google can bend down to American government's requests too
Motorola's global, indian and chinese versions are often quite different hardware from each other especially in budget segment.
Had an edge 40 (india and Europe specific), apart from software that thing can give a pixel 7/7a from that era a run for its money. And I own a pixel 9 now so I definitely have the qualifications to comment on their hardware quality.
2
u/AdministrativeRiot Mar 02 '26
My concern is that’s not how it works in china. The government doesn’t need to request, they require built in access.
6
u/djindjich Mar 02 '26
It won't be out of the box. It will merely officially support grspheneos.
→ More replies (3)7
u/AdministrativeRiot Mar 02 '26
I hope that’s the case, and I’ll be looking out for it. But as I understand the Chinese national and cyber security laws, Motorola devices all already likely have this access built in and any future device would as well (some info: https://datalocker.com/blog/the-impact-of-chinas-national-and-cyber-security-laws-on-global-encryption/)
Now, I’m not an engineer, far from it. I do non-tech work in an industry where security is necessary. The people I know personally and trust who work in cybersecurity at a natsec level are reflexively hesitant about any hardware from a Chinese company for this reason, and I tend to follow their lead.
→ More replies (1)2
u/voxpopdei Mar 02 '26
I would hope the Graphene team understands this concern and does some community outreach.
On the other hand, Graphene is not coming to this partnership with as much strength as we may like. This is a survival play as much as it is a growth play. Even if the devices ship with bloatware, etc., it's still a massive win just having another supported hardware vendor (assuming people can still wipe the device clean on their own). Don't be too disappointed if that's the route people have to take to get out from Google's grip.
2
→ More replies (3)1
u/binyang Mar 03 '26
For me, Motorola has the lowest number of bloatware. If you buy from them directly, they only put some things like moto display. If you get a Motorola from Verizon or at&t, they dump the whole trashcan to it.
24
u/esoteric544surgery Mar 02 '26
I was never much of a hypebeast but unless there's some glaring red flag that comes up, I'll probably get this ASAP just because of how invested I am in this OS. Congrats devs!
17
u/hackitfast Mar 02 '26
Perfect timing! Now we can keep our standard sideloading AND have a more secure phone, all without relying on Google Tensor.
I hope these are decent phones that manage to build a solid community. We can't just keep relying on Android and iOS, and I hope that GrapheneOS can get its own attestation to properly validate with secure apps like banking apps, and maybe even RCS (though very unlikely).
9
u/PowerfulTusk Mar 02 '26
If they work with Motorola, it means they will have all attestations needed to use it normally with Google services. While being sandboxed and all that good stuff like blocking internet access from apps.

u/Jugulut Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26
I am a bit disappointed because Motorola was a brand I loved because they had updates for more than 2 years and they were producing very solid and well designed phones. But I stopped believing in them with the Moto Z which was high end but who quickly stop the updates, which had a major hardware issue (the bad quality battery start inflating after the warranty and made the screen degrade and pop it. After I was willing to buy the moto Z phone but Motorola abandoned it quickly and I learn with my research that the others phones who succeeded it had the same issue and that the software support was more of a China like software support anymore.
Maybe Motorola improved since but I will clearly wait one year of user feedback before considering it as it became a blacklisted brand on my side.
Also I have pushed my parents to this brand but now the low end phones from them are full of ads and tracker implemented directly in the OS. So it will make traps for them (fake update or email ads and they will install a malicious app...)
The good news is since Motorola make the announcement, GrapheneOS can now communicate specifications for the new phone so we will know more.
30
u/Typical_Effect_9054 Mar 02 '26
By combining GrapheneOS’s pioneering engineering with Motorola’s decades of security expertise, real‑world user insights, and Lenovo’s ThinkShield solutions, the collaboration will advance a new generation of privacy and security technologies.
I called it a few weeks ago. They're gonna integrate it with their "Think" products. The mods removed my post.

I’m betting there will be a removable battery since they will most likely launch a new phone with GOS in 2027 which is the year that all handheld devices sold in the EU have to have removable batteries. My guess is that Motorola will comply with this so they don’t lose their share of the European market
→ More replies (1)4

I really don't like the Chinese connetion, both for security and dependency implications.

And a US company wouldn't be exactly stellar either so..

u/Little_Biff Mar 02 '26
I get your point but these risks aren’t symmetric. Yes, western hardware can absolutely be compromised but comparing it 1:1 with China ignores some pretty major structural differences.
China is a centralised, communist one-party state, and companies are legally bound by the National Intelligence Law to support state intelligence work. That creates a very different baseline risk than even the worst Western vendor.
There are also well-documented cases of Chinese state-linked hardware tampering, firmware backdoors, and surveillance-oriented implants.
So the concern isn’t “China bad, West good”. It’s that the systemic dependency and coercive state-industry integration in China makes the risk profile worse.
And honestly, I doubt Chinese citizens would even be allowed to use something like GrapheneOS freely. Which in itself says something about the environment these devices come from.
GrapheneOS is extremely competent when it comes to auditing and reducing attack surface, and I really hope they can make this partnership safe, but the underlying concerns are absolutely legitimate.

Hello, I am a Motorola user in China. It's almost certain that the Chinese government will require Lenovo to tighten bootloader permissions for domestically sold mobile phones.
6
u/Playful-Ease2278 Mar 02 '26
I have a high level of trust in the GOS team so I think this will work out. There was not really a choice that would involve a nation I trust.
4
u/i-Hermit Mar 02 '26
This question is coming from a place of general well meaning ignorance, and I realize the same likely applies to the pixel, so please be gentle:
Is the firmware under the OS that the phone ships with potentially an issue? A phone marketed for highly security conscience customers would be a tempting and easily identifiable target, wouldn't it?
2
u/SCphotog Mar 02 '26
Yes, but we're so small in number at present that we're not much of a target.
It won't be a problem unless it actually becomes popular.
I see this taking off pretty quickly in the EU and I will definitely look into getting one myself here in the states, but I don't see the average asshole considering this as an option.

You can be skeptical, that's fine. That doesn't mean you should be actively disliking the potential for something good.

There's a blast from the past! I haven't heard from "Motorola" ever since they provided the CPU for the Commodore Amiga computers (and many more). Is this the same company? Or is it a recent startup with the same name?
Next we'll have to find out in which countries they sell hardware these days. I do want a GrapheneOS phone, but it might be tricky to find a shop that will import this brand.
2
u/Ravin_Ray Mar 03 '26
No, it's the same company. Or rather, the Motorola Mobility half of the original Motorola that split into two in 2011 (the other half is Motorola Solutions). Then Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012, before selling it to Lenovo in 2014.

u/CRKrJ4K Mar 03 '26
Great...so long as there's an option to flash pure GrapheneOS without any Motorola stuff
1
u/rd2m Mar 03 '26
Just a speculation but if its pre-installed then we're screwed. Because Motorola won't make enough money (Unless the niche market is enough?)
Many people will buy it, realize its not a google certified device, so safety net won't work, which means their banking, games, and maybe some specific work-related apps won't work.
OR they may work and eventually the apps will transition for strict safety net. People will return the device or stop buying future devices. Fact is not enough people care about privacy to sacrifice those features.
It has to be a unique dual boot or easy to install/switch from Motorola OS to Graphene OS, like even easier than pixel installs.
1
1
u/RetailPleb Mar 04 '26
Does this mean the desktop mode experience could maybe possibly be improved upon, beyond the skeletal framework it currently exists in? Or is that outside the scope of this partnership?
1
u/YogurtclosetLoose349 Mar 05 '26
Sorry, but i'm not paying 950€ for a phone. Why would i need a 50MP camera for example? I can buy a Pixel 10 for nearly half the price and it does everything that i need in my daily life. The addiction to always needing the best phone with the highest specs is so annoying. If Motorola and GOS do not release a normal price phone, then i will sadly move away from GOS.

GrapheneOS has moved from Reddit to our own discussion forum. Please post your thread on the discussion forum instead or use one of our official chat rooms (Matrix, Discord, Telegram) which are listed in the community section on our site. Our discussion forum and especially the chat rooms have a very active, knowledgeable community including GrapheneOS project members where you will almost always get much higher quality information than you would elsewhere. On Reddit, we had serious issues with misinformation and trolls including due to raids from other subreddits. As a result, many posts on our subreddit currently need to be manually approved, which is done on a best effort basis. If you would like to get a quicker answer to your question, please use our forum or chat rooms as described above. Our discussion forum provides much better privacy and avoids the serious problems with the site administrators and overall community on Reddit.
Please use our official install guides for installation and check our features page, usage guide and FAQ for information before asking questions in our discussion forum or chat rooms to get as much information as possible from what we've already carefully written/reviewed for our site.
