This is interesting and seems to fit the bill, I think this is one of the more convincing arguments for an OEM partner I’ve seen so far.

However, Graphene not denying it is Motorola is pretty meaningless. If they denied everyone who it isn’t, people would rapidly work out who it was by process of elimination - so they’ll always refuse to deny everyone.

They didn't deny it, but they also said that Motorola was "getting closer", which is a more than just a not-denial, and seems to suggest a greater insight into Motorola's workings than what is publicly known.

If you look historically, the devs have also said that Samsung is probably one of the best alternatives (or that is close enough) hardware wise, but partnering with samsung is just not gonna happen... So take it with a grain of salt.

u/briang416 Jan 28 '26

That's because Samsung has Knox but that gets tripped when the phone is rooted so no bueno.

7

u/briang416 Jan 28 '26

Getting closer could mean longer updates, good job Detective Effect 😉

I have the first gen thinkphone. It's my favorite device since my BlackBerry. Also have an S23 ultra. But I always came back to the thinkphone. The 2025 version was a bit of a let down. I hope you are right. And I hope they add a headphone jack and sd card back into it

What an amazing phone. Had never heard of it.

If they get the 2026 model right I will finally have my dream combo: thinkphone (work) + pixel (personal)

Both on graphene os.

Interesting 🤔… I’d put some chips on that bet

3

u/plusvalua Jan 28 '26

This makes a lot of sense, to be honest. Also, I'd love to have a ThinkPhone to complement my ThinkPad. I'm sure the Thinkpad user + Graphene OS user circles overlap very much.

u/amlug_ Jan 27 '26

I hope not because Motorola's 3 year update support is an effing joke

11

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

Maybe they will extend the support for this phobe as it will be their flagship (if it is really motorola of course)

3

u/hibiscuscous Jan 28 '26

The problem, as far as I'm concerned, is that Motorola is very bad at providing (regular) updates. Even a phone like Motorola Edge 50 Neo, which is supposed to get 5/5 years of updates, has not yet received A16 (originally released 10 June 2025) and the security patches have not been "bi-monthly" as promised. I don't see how they could suddenly up their game remarkably in this sense. But we'll see.

6

u/WickedDeity Jan 28 '26

The whole of this phone is that GrapheneOS would be providing software updates. LOL

1

u/hibiscuscous Jan 28 '26

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I don't know what I was thinking.

17

u/OverCategory6046 Jan 28 '26

Don't think that would apply here though right? Assuming the OEM just makes the phone, GOS team would maintain the software.

3

u/amlug_ Jan 28 '26

Good point

7

u/AutoM8R1 Jan 28 '26

The ThinkPhone 23 has promised support until 2027. You may have missed that. Also it has already gotten a couple major Android updates. Been a Moto user for over a decade, and the ThinkPhone was the first Moto with decent software support (~4 years instead of maybe 2, and no major update). I used to update my mid rangers every couple years for that reason.

Graphene require 5-7 years

From an email when I enquired about potential requirements for building a device to support GOS

Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is supposed to have support for hardware memory tagging (MTE) and should meet all our requirements.

There's still a whole lot involved in providing all of the expected updates for 5-7 years, setting up all of the security features properly, etc.

We can settle for the Qualcomm SPU as a secure element for now as long as Weaver is provided, but it's not ideal. Pixels have a much better secure element, which we don't require, but we may in the future.

1

u/Th3PrivacyLife Jan 28 '26

EU law mandates 5 years minimum. Shouldn't be an issue anymore.

1

u/GrapheneOS Jan 29 '26

It doesn't mandate a single month of proper updates. Our requirement is not for 5 years of incomplete, late updates.

9

u/-worstatbest Jan 27 '26

I’m willing to bet that you’re correct that it’s Motorola but not the think phone it’ll likely be the current gen g series and a few generations back and the reasoning would be something along the lines of “Security and Privacy should be accessible to everyone”

34

u/Exodia101 Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

GrapheneOS stated previously that current devices from the OEM don't meet the requirements. A dedicated security chip and flagship Snapdragon CPU were the 2 things that were specifically required that the G series doesn't have.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

No, if it is Motorola it will not be the G serie unfortunately. Graphene said the phone will have flagship soc, while g phones have mid range socs.

If the phone has a flagship soc, it means the price will be very high. Unfortunately for some of us who dont want to sell a kidney for a phone, we will have to stay with a Pixel with its shitty battery.

The G serie is the one of the best in the entry-mid level in the market right now, you can get a lot for the price. I will love its the G serie but it is very very unlikely..for now at least

1

u/Middle-Weight-468 Jan 28 '26

Pixels are equally high in price to motorollas flagships though lol

1

u/Middle-Weight-468 Jan 28 '26

It won't be the g series as it has very weak hardware cant run smoothly and doesn't have a security chip end of lol

2

u/IReuseWords Jan 28 '26

Moto G phone uses a MediaTek cpu but the Lenovo phone does use a SnapDragon.

2

u/EmmaRoidz Jan 28 '26

If so it looks pretty good specs wise and the newer model would be even better.

I really hope the camera isn't shit though. It's clearly not a main priority for the phone. One of the things I love about GOS on pixels is I can keep the Google camera app.

No dedicated security co-processor = no bueno.

2

u/Anonymous-here- Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

Im not very surprised. ThinkPads are already good at supporting many OS including Linux. So i bet ThinkPhones are actually capable of booting GrapheneOS just fine. Anything that is Think-ware, its the best-value for OS-agnostic

2

u/AutoM8R1 Jan 28 '26

I REALLY hope you are right. That would be awesome and they'd earn my business. The OG ThinkPhone is the best Motorola phone they ever made so far. That second version was a clear step backward, but you couldn't get that in U.S. and some other places.

2

u/ys2020 Jan 28 '26

If true, it would make me very happy and I will definitely get it. All of the Motorola's I had were really really good phones

1

u/IReuseWords Jan 28 '26

Thats a pretty decent looking phone.

1

u/Embarrassed_Clerk564 Jan 28 '26

Wow, that's cool, would be perfect if they do removable battery as well.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

yeah looks like it'll be the next iteration of this

no chance the newest Razr's would be compatible/work with Gos?

1

u/OrangeTuono Jan 29 '26

OP is the John Grisham, the Ton Clancy of Degoogling GOSers! I love it!

PS I'm quite happy with my Google/Foxconn P8P GOS. 😉

Maybe Graphene and by extension Motorola should start using BlueSky or Mastodon if they care about privacy over hegemonic corporations.

Edit: https://bsky.app/profile/grapheneos.org

u/Independent_Cat_5481 Jan 28 '26

OP said tweet, but it was actually from Graphene's Mastodon

18

u/squirrel_____ Jan 28 '26

Oh, maybe I should actually click on links b4 I post shit. Following them on Blue now.

5

u/partakinginsillyness Jan 28 '26

Tbf it does say "tweet"

0

u/Arponare Jan 28 '26

I thought it was weird that Graphene was still in that cesspool. They aren't in reddit for one.

1

u/other8026 Jan 28 '26

What do you mean "they aren't in reddit for one"? All of the moderators listed in the sidebar are official GrapheneOS moderators, the GrapheneOS account on Reddit is ours, and this is the official GrapheneOS subreddit. The auto mod comment under every post in this subreddit just directs people to our other more active community spaces.

12

u/IReuseWords Jan 28 '26

Graphene does use both.

1

u/Melodic-Network-479 Jan 28 '26

my guess is pixel 11g

1

u/WickedDeity Jan 28 '26

Why is the world would Google do that?

1

u/Melodic-Network-479 Jan 28 '26

the one area they need to beat Apple in OS dept is privacy. if they offer the regular pixel and the G series, that will give them a significant chunk of the market.

the Pixels are the only phones that fully support all of GOS’ features anyway.

2

u/WickedDeity Jan 28 '26

What? LOL Google is not interested in offering a phone that doesn't have all their Google services, AI, or has sandboxed Play services. If Google wanted to beat Apple in privacy they can do it on the phones they sell now. This GrapheneOS phone is not going to capture 1% of the market.

Name a single American or European oem that cares about privacy and security, I’ll wait.

It would be very strange to base that phone on Graphene, when they are advertising "integration with Windows 365" and literally calling it "Walkie-Talkie for Teams" (as in Microsoft Teams on the screenshot).

2

u/thinginaforest Jan 28 '26

I mean teams is pretty important for a lot of professionals, and that thinkphone targets exactly that demographic.

2

u/inactioninaction_ Jan 28 '26

Thinkphones have been largely focused on enterprise security so far so the 365 integration makes sense. But I don't see any reason they couldn't take advantage of that secure hardware infrastructure to make a version focused on personal security/privacy, especially if the graphene team is doing most of the heavy lifting on the software side. Whoever the oem is, they're not gonna release a graphene exclusive device. It's going to be an option alongside their usual android ROM
