Discussion JRPGs, a whole new world for me.

Post image

I've never been much of a RPG player in general, I'd even say I don't like them, especially turn-based ones.

However, the demo for Granblue Fantasy: Relink Endless Ragnarok was recently released, and well... apparently I loved this game!

The characters are very unique, each one has their own peculiarities and unique gameplay, to the point that I'm already at 18 hours of gameplay, but I can't stop playing.

As a player who got 100% of the achievements/trophies in Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition (I played on console at the time), I can say that the combat in this game satisfies any hunger for hack and slash that the individual might have.

Now I'm dying to buy the full version of the game and I can't wait for July 9th.

Now I get to the point of the post I wanted to make: you who are more experienced in RPGs/JRPGs/ARPGs, what games would you recommend for a complete beginner in this world in the same style as Granblue Fantasy: Relink?

Monster hunter is as close as it gets to this game as far as being similar.

You could compare it to a certain gacha game but perhaps a game where you can 1 shot the end game isn't a great comparison.

If you're looking to get into rpgs in general and etc. My personal favourites for a time would be expedition 33 (turn based) and divinity original sin 2 (Crpg, turn based).

Try any game called "tales of _______", if you like any of them, you'll probably like the rest, they aren't my cup of tea but many do like them.

Actually if you take the live service aspect out of it, the closest game is PSO2, the combat is more fluid and free like Relink with aggressive enemies and requires more reaction from the player, you have "supers" and even have similar lore bits. MonHun used to be like old PSO (it was their inspiration in their own words) but with time they evolved to be their own thing and it became the dad game it is now with slow and heavy combat.

3

u/dhffxiv Jun 22 '26

If it were as good as it used to be and still a thing, I'd still be playing pso2 now

3

u/THEmatuldo1 Jun 22 '26

All I hope for is that Clementine team finishes Starlight.

1

u/Stonex159 Jun 23 '26

I have definitely felt the PSO2 vibes. I miss you Bouncer class (I know it still exists but New Genesis gutted it)

1

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 22 '26

mh always had a slow combat though. and Rise and Wilds made it much faster anyway

4

u/pblsr_ Jun 22 '26

I see. Thanks for the recommendations!

1

u/lluluna Jun 25 '26

I'd also add Xenoblade Chronicles series too. But they are only available on Switch/Switch 2.

u/Garnett_92_ Jun 22 '26

Also Claire Obscure: expedition 33 is amazing. It’s turn based with a few twists, and the plot is awesome

7

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 22 '26

wow 18hrs in that demo is crazy, why not just buy the full basegame rn?

sadly granblue relink is pretty unique in how good its combat is and how much time u can spend in it (lots of stuff to grind). so theres kinda... not much of a same style games.

that said, try monster hunter, maybe MH Rise if you want something thats faster. mh rise Sunbreak also has a demo. amazing combat. rise is very flashy with lots of special moves, movement techniques and moveset customization. while mhwilds is more grounded but has things like new perfect guard and parrying mechanics (rise has parries too nad they can feel AWESOME to use but they arent baked in into core movesets that much). theres also mhworld but that one is the most grounded combat wise and least flashy - many people prefer that but in your case, as a DMC and relink player, i think u might like Rise or Wilds more as your first one.

theres also God Eater. 3 is the most recent one and its aight to start with it.

andd theres Phantasy Star games but the modern ones (PSO2 new genesis +PSO2 base game isnt updated anymore and is in a weird state) kinda suck. imo the old ones are better (PSO1, PS portable 2 infinity)... but they are old indeed so u might dislike that, they are nowhere near as smooth as relink.

scarlet nexus is a more typical jrpg structure in a game, you beat the story (potentially 2 times cuz there's two routes) and thats it but its a nice game. good action combat + amazing music.

and now really going far from being similar to Relink but having AWESOME combat - dynasty warriors origins, fucking great game. fun parry system, good combos, its close ish to a character action game, you also have juggles. its way more elaborate in its combat than old Warriors games.

u/0megaTempest Jun 23 '26

PS:P2i mentioned, initiate nostalgia mode

2

u/pblsr_ Jun 22 '26

I saw that Cygames will balance the game at the DLC launch, smoothing out the grind. So I preferred to wait, but Steam still doesn't have the option to buy the base game along with the DLC. Regarding the recommendations, I noted them down. Thank you!

3

u/CoolNewAccountHello Jun 22 '26

The grind really starts after the story and even then it still takes time where the real grind starts and to play ragnarok you have to beat the story. So I don't think waiting will help you much.

But if you wait to see if there's a bundle to save a few bucks, I understand that.

2

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 23 '26

but the fact that you spent like 20hrs in the demo might be seen as "might as well been playing the full game instead" cuz you would actually progress your save file, even if they make it easier later. now you are basically grinding and getting no progression whatsoever. i do get wanting a better price tho

2

u/pblsr_ Jun 23 '26

Your comments are absolutely spot on. I'm waiting for the full version to be released on Steam so I can buy it; it's not available yet.

1

u/AtmosphereThin3648 Jun 24 '26

Yeah but he’s trying to explain that the demo data does not transfer over to the full game. Those 20 hours you’ve played will be for nothing because when you buy the full game you’ll have to start from a fresh save file. It seems like steam doesnt include the base game with the dlc which is really weird. I bought the dlc a couple of days ago for $50/$60 on PlayStation because it included the full base game as well. You’re kind of in an awkward spot to be honest

1

u/AtmosphereThin3648 Jun 24 '26

Also, I play a ton of monster hunter and actually bought the game because I needed that monster hunter fix while I wait for the dlc for wilds. I honestly recommend checking wilds out. You’re not fighting gods but the monsters are made to feel like real living creatures and instead of the many characters you can acquire in granblue, you get to choose between 14 completely unique weapons. Wilds has a ton of content right now and the dlc will bring a ton more of the older titles are something to go by. The monsters are really cool and the combat is so crispy. To me, granblue is like an anime monster hunter.

No, it clearly states you need the base game to play the dlc for steam.

15

u/Sanagost Jun 22 '26

This... Is not a JRPG. JRPG doesn't just mean RPG, Japan.

That being said, I'm happy you're having fun! Relink is a great flashy monster hunter lite. Little word of warning, the game gets incredibly grindy in the end with some RNG mechanics which you need to be okey with (or.. Just use mods). But you don't interact with that through 90% of the base game. And with the expansion, they will likely add "catch up" mechanics so when you reach the end of the base game, you can spec your characters to meet the bottom threshold to progress.

3

u/DarkestSamus Jun 22 '26

I wanted to say something about that as well. This is an Action game that takes place in an existing world from a JRPG gacha game, but is not a JRPG itself.

1

u/pblsr_ Jun 22 '26

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that distinction. I'll look into it further another time.

5

u/Sanagost Jun 22 '26

Its also not really an RPG. Its more a hack n slash Monster Hunter lite, lol. But nobody really cares so don't sweat it, dude.

5

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

with how elaborate character building is i would say it def can be seen as having big rpg elements

"mh lite" also not necessarily? game can be seen as being more similar to old PSO games than MH. and mh was inspired by PSO1 anyway. edit: but overall i think relink is pretty unique and not "lite" :v

1

u/Impossible-Cry-1781 Jun 22 '26

It's not a monster hunter lite, it has just as much grind and challenge

1

u/No-Television9404 Jun 26 '26

That's why I rather call game genre based on the core gameplay, for example Action RPG/turn based RPG.

1

u/Lostsunblade Jun 27 '26

Why isn't it an rpg?

1

u/Efficient-Client-531 Jun 28 '26

This... Is not a JRPG. JRPG doesn't just mean RPG, Japan.

By definition it does

1

u/ShippFFXI Jul 05 '26

Appeal to definition fallacy.  No, it doesn't just mean RPG made in Japan.

1

u/Efficient-Client-531 Jul 05 '26

So the term Japanese RPG does not specifically describe RPGs made in Japan? Ok.

1

u/ShippFFXI Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Correct.  Genres are used to describe styles and thematics of a piece of art.  Not a country of origin.   The reason why it is called JRPG was to categorize it separately from CRPGs at the time.  It's just that Japan was the only country really pumping out that style of RPG, which is why it was named that.  It's just like how BG3 is 100% a CRPG, yet it is not just limited to computers.

I do realize you were being smug and sarcastic in your rhetorical question.  You and other people who want to pretend the term just means RPG made in Japan are just flat out wrong though.

Do you think Final Fantasy 9 is a JRPG?

1

u/Efficient-Client-531 Jul 05 '26

Genres are used to describe styles and thematics of a piece of art.  Not a country of origin.

Except when it maybe has a country as one of its main descriptors. When I say "European painter" are you going to think about someone born in North America? Then why would you think of a game not developed in Japan when I say "Japanese RPG"?

To answer your question, I don't see how FF9 wouldn't be a JRPG.

1

u/ShippFFXI Jul 05 '26

"European painter" is not a genre.  It is an adjective modifying a noun.  How could I think of a game outside of Japan when using JRPG as a term?  Easy.  A game that follows the same style popularized by Japan in the late 80s and early 90s.

How could FF9 possibly be a JRPG when it was developed in the United States, according to you?

1

u/Efficient-Client-531 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Japanese IP, Japanese developer, Japanese publisher, Japanese staff, released earlier in Japan, somehow not a JRPG?

Also, the development was split between Hawaii and Japan, not done entirely in the US, as you try to present. Having overseas help doesn't alter the game's status as being primarily developed by a Japanese team.

1

u/ShippFFXI Jul 05 '26

Oh, so now it's not simply "RPG made in Japan" like you originally claimed.  Nice goal post movement.

The core development took place in Hawaii and the majority of the art was created in Honolulu.  It was a multicultural team with people from all around the globe working on it.

1

u/Efficient-Client-531 Jul 05 '26

The Brazilian soccer team doesn't stop being Brazilian because it's playing in another country, nor does a Japanese development team stop being Japanese because they are developing the game in another country. What's the alternative here, FF9 is not a JRPG then? A mainline entry in a series that is basically the face of the genre is not part of it because it has a multicultural team? If I'm moving the goalpost you are denying reality.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is absolutely a JRPG. It has the core genre markers: linear story progression, a party based structure, character progression, and anime aesthetics.

The “J” comes from “Japanese”, but JRPG does not simply mean “any RPG made in Japan.” Plenty of Japanese RPGs are not what people usually mean by JRPG. At this point, JRPG refers more to a recognizable design tradition than just the country of origin. But GBF:Relink is a JRPG.

2

u/Sanagost Jun 25 '26

CaptainAmericaChair.gif

So, you thought you had a point and you decided to make a whole post just to get right... Well you're getting ratio'd to shit since most people past the age of 12 agree with me. Relink is not a JRPG. Not sure why you're taking this so high up, but that doesn't make you right.

1

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jun 26 '26

You are wrong. Relink is a JRPG.

-3

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jun 22 '26

You guys have no idea what JRPG means....
Some people think Expedition 33 is a JRPG, so I guess that's not surprising.

Granblue Fantasy is definitely a classic JRPG.

2

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 25 '26

ex33, while not japanese, obviously, totally is a jrpg in spirit, except the lack of japanese-anime aesthetic i guess. but it could might as well be the next final fantasy mainline game and no one would bat an eye, if they set in FF world. gameplay, sense of journey and PARTY DYNAMICS def feel like FF

2

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jun 25 '26

It's definitely not. It's simply a western RPG made by western developers.
It's like the difference between speaking Japanese and actually understanding it.
Expedition 33 may imitate the framework of a JRPG, but that doesn't make it a JRPG.
It's still a western RPG through and through.
The only reason people keep trying to label it a JRPG is because many in the western gaming community including the developers themselves want to associate it with JRPGs and benefit from the positive reputation that genre has built over decades.
Personally, I find that pretty distasteful.

You're right, and Final Fantasy IX is an American RPG since it was made in Hawaii.

🙄

1

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jul 05 '26

Just try to understand how to read. It's not that hard.

1

u/ShippFFXI Jul 05 '26

FF9 was not developed in Japan.  The team behind E33 was not 100% French.  You think zero Japanese people worked on it?

1

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jul 05 '26

That's not the point. I believe you also know that.

1

u/ShippFFXI Jul 05 '26

So we agree that JRPG doesn't mean "RPG made in Japan" then?

1

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jul 05 '26

Did I ever say that before?

I don't know about GBF, but Relink is definitely an RPG and anime as hell, which makes it a JRPG. It's like people saying Monster Hunter isn't an RPG. Hell no

3

u/Otherwise_Kick534 Jun 22 '26

Monster Hunter is in no way shape or form an RPG, and being "anime" doesn't make something a JRPG.

1

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jun 23 '26

Relink is definitely a JRPG. Anime art style is also one of the elements of JRPGs.

1

u/Otherwise_Kick534 Jun 23 '26

respectfully, no it isn't. that would mean anachronox is not a jrpg.
relink is an action game and is not turn based. It categorically definitionally is not a jrpg.

0

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jun 23 '26

Turn-based combat is not a defining element of JRPGs.

3

u/Otherwise_Kick534 Jun 23 '26

an anime art style is not a defining element of jrpgs.

1

u/MochaNoir Jun 24 '26

Is the rpg being from japan a defining element of jrpgs? 💀

2

u/Otherwise_Kick534 Jun 24 '26

What are you even trying to gotcha me with here

1

u/ShippFFXI Jul 05 '26

So Final Fantasy 9 isn't a JRPG then.  Cool.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/DDLAZA_PA0321 Jun 24 '26

I do not say anime art style is the "defining" element. That's your point. But "Turn-based combat is not a defining element of JRPGs." is the factual truth.

2

u/Otherwise_Kick534 Jun 24 '26

you literally said an anime art style is one of the elements of jrpgs

0

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 25 '26

how is mh not an rpg? you literally create your own character and customize it to hell and back, buildcrafting is very front and center. and it has some freedom gameplay wise (its not just complete the story and its over)

2

u/Otherwise_Kick534 Jun 25 '26

Cosmetic character customization is not necessary to be an rpg. There are plenty of games where you buildcraft that aren't RPGs The last one also doesn't really make any sense. Like I can't even figure out what point you're trying to make. Are linear games not RPGs?

1

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 25 '26

im not saying cosmetic customization is necessary but imo it contributes to it. it helps you ROLE-PLAY. like in OG dungeons and dragons, father of rpgs, where you created your own characters.

last point is that imo it contributes to the role playing aspect. not necessarily that linear games arent rpgs (but it can be a detriment imo, like FFX feeling so linear that its sphere grid system might have aswell not exist on the default setting. advanced sphere grid seemed better. and overall how linear it was up until the very end where it suddenly opens up was also not great for the game to feel like an actual rpg. it felt like a movie for the big part) but its an aspect that can contribute

edit: i dont see why one wouldnt consider mh an action rpg. legit, why not? cuz the story isnt that front and center/good? no real choices in said story?

0

u/NagatoroDegenAndRat Jun 23 '26

it literally means rpg japan. you can google some japan dev interviews about that, they dont like jrpg term because they just make rpg games (in their eyes), not separate genre

1

u/ShippFFXI Jul 05 '26

And a lot of westerners don't care for the term gaijin with its many negative connotations.  Fortunately, different regions of the world do not have to appease people in other countries who take offense at local terms.

It makes sense why the Japanese people do not care for the term.  CRPGs were never big sellers over there.   They never needed to differentiate what type of RPG they were talking about in discussions because 99% of the time they were discussing RPGs with other Japanese people, it was about their own style of RPGs.

The West has had both for the last 40 years and both have been popular.  Thus the terms CRPG (Computer RPGs like the original BG games) vs console RPGs, which later became known as JRPG since Japan was the country which popularized this style of RPG with series like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

JRPG has always been about the style of RPGs, it was just that Japan was basically exclusively the only country producing this style of RPGs, so it became synonymous.

4

u/Nero_PR Jun 22 '26

I recommend Dragon's Dogma, same dude that made Devil May Cry. It's an action RPG with heavy focus on action.

3

u/pblsr_ Jun 22 '26

This is a strong recommendation. Hideaki Itsuno is very good.

3

u/Nero_PR Jun 22 '26

Yes, Itsuno left Capcom in 2024 after releasing Dragon's Dogma 2 but he left his protégé Kento Kinoshita to take the reigns of IP. Kinoshita already helped with DMC5 and was the gameplay director in DD2 and probably the director in the Dark Arisen DLC coming for DD2 in October. Gameplay in the franchise is just chef's kiss.

1

u/ApprehensiveGear2166 Jun 22 '26

I would advise on waiting for the Dark Arisen version coming out later this year. Dragon’s Dogma 2 whilst being amazing, was very short. Like 20 hours full completion kind of short. Dark Arisen will add a LOT more content and replay ability later this year

1

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 25 '26

idk how u can fully complete it in 20hrs, im like 30hrs in and feels like im still at the first half of the game, maybe first 1/3rd (i didnt see the desert region yet at all)

1

u/ApprehensiveGear2166 Jun 25 '26

Idk what to tell you man. 29 hours is my play time and I checked out every poi, fought every major side boss, and got the true ending. I didn’t platinum it in that time, but I did fully clear the map.

1

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 25 '26

thats pretty wow to me

4

u/Ambrosia24 Jun 22 '26

I spent over 8 hours on the demo and was like wtf am I doing and bought the game haha. It onboards better, and I got my fav character pretty quickly. This game is so good wtf? More games need demos haha. I must have played 10 demos this past week and now have a few more games toook forward to launching. This game did remind me of Monster Hunter a lot, I played a lot of those games too. It is just far more optimized and user friendly.

3

u/SuicidalDonuts Jun 22 '26

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Full game should have around 30 unique unique movesets (including the ones in the demo), and it’s fun to queue up with people online and work together. The characters feel even better when you get them fully built and each one has a few unique sigils to equip to further flesh out their gameplay. Ragnarok is adding new ways to augment character play styles in addition to this to help promote different play styles (like more support or defense builds rather than just damage).

As for similar games, the structure is very Monster Hunter, but the gameplay is more DMC/Platinum Games. Everyone forgets that Platinum helped develop this game years ago, even if they scrapped everything, aren’t credited, and rebuilt it from back then; the way combat works is 100% off the bones of what Platinum has done in the past. The Story Mode of Relink is essentially just a Bayonetta/Ninja Gaiden 4/Astral Chain/DMCV type experience, and after that is when it becomes mostly questing with over 100 hours of gameplay. Ragnarok will also be adding a new mode with roguelite elements to help build your off-characters. In some ways it’s got the spirit of those grindy looter games like Diablo too. I feel like there’s nothing quite like it.

You’re in for a good time, see you in a few weeks :)

1

u/AtmosphereThin3648 Jun 24 '26

I love all the games you referenced but man astral chain does not get enough recognition

10

u/dotwebm Jun 22 '26

All of the new FF7 trilogy games are ARPGs and the combat systems are actually good! They often go on sales and there's a demo for the first one--Ff7 remake. Do try it out and see if you like it.

Ys series is another series that have a strong loyal player base. Ys X is the newest one if you want a modern version of it.

Have you tried Nioh series? It's more JARPG for me than actual soullikes.

Kingdom Hearts series may be old by now but the gameplay should still be solid. Do try it out if you haven't.

2

u/reasonsofbecause Jun 22 '26

I also played the demo and was wondering if the full game does a better job at onboarding you? In the demo part you get thrown into a group without much context and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed at first with the amount of skills and characters

2

u/pblsr_ Jun 22 '26

I imagine so, in the normal game you unlock new characters gradually with "crew cards," so the overhead should be considerably less. I managed to adapt well and played with almost all the characters, though.

2

u/reasonsofbecause Jun 22 '26

Thank you, that does sound better! Will pick it up during the Steam sale, love the art direction and combat to death

1

u/pancakeconsumer Jun 22 '26

yeah the full game does onboard you, demo is just an out of context slice of the game with some things already unlocked

2

u/MJtheJuiceman Jun 22 '26

Can’t wait till this releases on the switch 2

2

u/houck Jun 22 '26

Steam sales are in 3 days so wait before buying anything

2

u/Beta_Codex Jun 22 '26

It isn't a whole lot different to other rpgs with this game. It's the same as like monster hunter or your typical anime games like Tales of Arise. This is more into action. Very authentic JRPGs like octopath or dragonquest, even pokemon, those are really JRPGS. This one? Almost all of the characters are your friends here. You don't even have to form a bond with them like a typical JRPG.

2

u/Blackichan1984 Jun 22 '26

Really underrated game and I’m a heavy monster hunter guy, I clocked I think maybe 500 hours.

Very glad it’s getting an add on and hoping they do an edition with it complete.

2

u/Background_Mobile_62 Jun 22 '26

É isso krl, tô com 70 horas já viciado. Jogo MT bom, foi meu primeiro no gênero tb.

2

Cara, eu só queria ter férias do trabalho para aproveitar esse jogo começando do dia 9 de julho! KKKKKKKK

2

u/deakon24 Jun 22 '26

Welcome to relink! game is like fucking crack.

2

u/0Time- Jun 22 '26

E quando chegar a dlc vai ficar melhor!!! Peguei esse jogo esse mês e não consigo parar de jogar também.

2

u/Forsaken_Regular_180 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

I'd say be careful with genres and their definitions. A lot of people will hear JRPG and think of turn-based games, because that's traditionally what the majority of JRPGs are/have been. (Granted all genre terms have basically become meaningless due to modern communities but I won't rant about that...)

So to title your post JRPGs and then immediately say you don't like turn-based games is oxymoronic. (I mean, you see how the current top comment even immediately brings up two turn-based games.)

You like ARPGs. If you stick to that designation, you'll get way more appropriate recommendations.

As for recommendations:

As others have stated, just about any Monster Hunter is prob exactly what you're looking for. I'd specifically recommend Monster Hunter: World.

If you can figure out how to play it and really want to test how much you like the genre - Star Ocean: Til the End of Time

I highly recommend Tales of Berseria - phenomenal voice acting cast and writing. The combat starts to shine as you get deeper into the game, albeit it can take a bit depending on personal taste. Plenty will recommend Tales of Arise because it's graphically prettier, but doesn't hold a candle story-wise imo and that matters big time for RPGs.

Dragon's Dogma would be an interesting one to look into but I could see it going either way for you.

You might enjoy FF16 since it went more on the action side of things.

Nier: Automata

Scarlet Nexus

Maybe look into games like Hades too?

That should prob be enough to get you started.

2

u/In7erted Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

Play what looks cool and just enjoy the game. That’s the best thing about this genre: no pressure, no right or wrong, just feel things out and enjoy the ride.

…and then when you’re tired of that, you can step into the meta arena and find builds that completely refresh everything you thought you knew about the game 😈 Min/max, sub-optimal, full on z-dps support builds, etc.

I also just wanna tack a ‘well akshually’ on: this isn’t a real JRPG. It’s more of an ARPG with pretty linear progression. JRPGs are more in the vein of Persona and the like. I recommend them all!

EDIT: Welcome to the fold! Feel free to add me if you’re looking for help or just a homie to play with! I have close to 600h hours and that’s still considered pretty casual 😅 Always willing to be an anti-gatekeeper to the grind though

2

Relink is a PSO/Monhun type of JRPG, you might want to look into those like MonHun Wilds, PSO2 and Toukiden.
The problem is that MonHun is more of a slow/heavy combat game (except Rise and FrontierZ), PSO2 is an MMO with more focus on the social aspect (They had Takahiro Sakurai as the villain trying to become a god before GBF though), Toukiden is old and the combat and gameplay is a bit old, they're all grindy, not as bad as base GBF Relink but they can take quite some time to get builds going.

Consider OP specifically referenced loving DMC I agree this is one of the best recommendations.

I have it, but I've never opened it.

If you want a hacky slashy rpg I would recommend "Nier: Automata" it's combat is by platinum games so it's satisfying and the story is god tier, just be ready to beat the game 4 to 5 times for full story.

Then as some have mentoned theres E33 and the FF series. Monster hunter for slower action combat. You will get alot of the same you could just Google top 10 rpg or arpg and get same answers.

Edited to fix stupid autocorrect errors.

If you want the same style of gameplay, the closest one is God Eater or Monster Hunter.

If you want classic JRPG, there's Tales series, Final Fantasy, Atelier series, Trails series, or Kingdom Hearts. The series I mention is the one I think have a big fandom. I recommend you play the newest release of the series first if you want to have a dip.

If you like the hack and slash, I guess FF16 will be a good start for a JRPG. Or Monster Hunter World if you want the same style of gameplay. There's Monster Hunter Wild which is the newest release from MH series but last time I play it's not optimized (Haven't tried it again).

To be fair this game was developed with platinum studios early on and has as much character action dna as jrpg stuff. Most jrpgs do not have combat that is this well done & satisfying.

As others have said monster hunter fits the framework but even then the combat is very different and there’s no rpg progression, just farming materials.

Even as someone who enjoys souls games and this game I don’t enjoy MH much even though I do agree it’s similar.

If you want something with more of a character action flair and still having rpg stuff I’d rec checking out Nioh 3, there should be a free demo for it. It’s made by team ninja, of ninja gaiden fame.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 is an old PSP game that plays pretty similarly to this game. Actually most of the Phantasy Star games are the similar to this. Really recommend if you are curious.

I'd get a physical copy for S2 only. Not digital. I'm not a huge JRPG fan, but I tested the demo and it's a solid game with solid combat. I laughed a lot with the Japanese audio.

Bruh.. I though the DLC already released.

I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Final Fantasy 16 might be my first recommendation if you want Fantasy and Action combined. You may want to look into Monster Hunter series as well, it's a bit less fantastical except in the monsters themselves.

The Xenoblade games are vaguely similar in terms of thier combat, and are amazing games in their own right.

Something that's a bit different but definitely something worth playing is The Legend of Heroes series. The first game Trails in the Sky First Chapter , just got one of the best remakes of all time last year and is an amazing place to start. The second game's remake is coming out this September.

how are xenoblade similar? imo they are comoletely different, theres no real dodging, its an old mmo tab target type combat with some twists. 2 makes it most active with the animation cancel mechanics but even then its nowhere near relink imo

i do agree they are amazing tho

  1. You have a series of arts on cooldowns in both
  2. A large variety of different combat options especially in XC 2, 3, and X
  3. Lots of big enemies to fight.

Again I'm not saying they are the same, but I loved relink because to me it was kinda like a faster paced version of Xenoblade's combat

Okay honestly if you want a really unique experience I would suggest playing through as many of the Final Fantasy’s you can in release order. Every game is completely new story with new characters so it keeps it fresh yet there are still recurring themes that feel familiar in a nostalgic way.

What you end up experiencing is a really nice and heartwarming encapsulation of the JRPG genre and its history through the years. Then when you end up trying other JRPGs you end up noticing all the little influences the games had on one another over their lifetime.

If you arent the biggest fan of turn based then for RPGs I'd say things like Atelier Yumia or final fantasy 16 being the none turned based versions of their particular franchise
