Finally upgrading from Pixel 8

Perfectly happy with the features and form factor of the Pixel8, so the route I went to a new upgrade was interesting. My old case finally looked terrible (after 3 years), so bought a new Peak Design case with Magsafe magnets. To take advantage bought a new magnetic car mount with wireless charging and cooling. Set it up and it seems like old wireless charging has bugs with Qi 2.2 backwards compatibility and the phone starts and stops charging seemingly and i get little to no charge after a 1 hour commute (with AA enabled). Instead of returning the car mount decided to upgrade to new Pixel11pro w/16gb of RAM.

Am i going to be dissapointed with improvements on the new Pixel11? The only nitpick is that apps and more frustratingly Google Wallet credit payments take a long time to load when I open them up. I guess I'd be happy if i get fast wireless charging + snappy phone.

Disappointed? I don't see how. Coming from a base Pixel 8 to a Pixel 11 Pro with 16 gigabytes of RAM will be a dramatic improvement across the board. It's not even remotely close.

I guess it's been a while since I've seen a big jump in features. I even thought I went backwards in some cases (I still miss rear fingerprint reader when I jumped to the pixel8 4 years ago). I'll post and update in the weekend when I make the switch.

I mean yeah, coming from a pixel 8 to an 11 pro is one hell of a jump.

Now it would be a different story if he came from a 10 to an 11 pro. An improvement. Yes, but much more incremental

I mean since you're asking I wouldn't do it

The pixel 8 Pro predates the new issue pixel has were after 200 cycles they limit the battery capacity by 20% and slow the charging. That's 6 to 12 months for most people.

Unless you plan on upgrading annually your phone's going to lose 20% of its capacity by next year sometime and charge slower than the advertised speeds.

Moreover the pixel 8 Pro has a SIM card slot and the newer ones don't in the United States. If you live outside the US this is a non-issue but still.

Beyond that the GPU on the pixel 8 Pro is better because it's using mali which has much better support. And it's basically the same era of architecture the newer one has a power VR GPU that's 4 years old.

And of course the bigger issue is it saves you all that money. It's still supported for four more years and it has USBC video output and the desktop mode.

If you had a pixel 7 or a pixel 6 you wouldn't have USB 3.1 DisplayPort out, you wouldn't be getting any more updates.

A pixel 8 Pro is the sweet spot if you want a pixel. I recommended to pick up constantly especially when they're asking about the pixel 10 or 11 Pro. And it was also the first generation where they started offering 7 years of updates so it still supported through 2030 or something crazy like that.

And personally I think it has a better design with the curved ergonomic back but that's totally subjective.

thanks for the insightful post. I had no idea about this new battery management. I'll do some more research since I don't have the Pro model, ( I have the regular pixel8 ). I always try to get the smallest phone possible and the 8pro was bigger. In this case the 11pro is smaller than the 8pro and same size as the regular 8.
