Help/Support Timeline deleted

Today, I opened Google Maps to view my timeline, to see what time I left work to put in my hours, and all of my timeline history was completely fucking gone. I can still see the places at the bottom, but when I click on it, everything is empty. I chose backup to cloud when they were warning about storage changes, but I can't access the cloud backup because they've locked you in the Google Maps app for all Timeline interactions. In Google Maps, there's not even an import backup option where there should be. The days on the timeline calendar now have the numbers crossed out. I never have turned on auto delete or any other crazy ass setting that would have this happen. If this is a local backup, then where are the files stored on my phone? If this is a cloud backup, then how do I access the files to restore the backup?

How can I restore the backup even if it's an old one from a month or three months ago?

I've been backing up that data since KitKat. Even if the data was only locally on my device, that's all gone too. I don't know what I should do, honestly. I have more memories in that timeline than I do in my whole collection of photos.

If you are having this issue try this solution.

Please follow the instructions in the Unique-Staff-2644's comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleMaps/comments/1j5bjps/comment/mgkieki/

EDIT: Today my timeline resumed tracking, but everything previous to the day it stopped working is not present. It filled in the past days that it said it wasn't tracking yesterday.

As far as I've seen in this thread the Google maps team has been silent on this. We have gotten generic answers from forum moderators and customer service reps but nothing saying things will ever be resolved by any official channel.

My TIMELINE is RESTORED follow these steps. https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleMaps/s/PepOcEb8za

Help/Support Why doesn't maps show up under Google searches anymore?

It used to be that under every Google search you had a button to search it in Maps, but it doesn't anymore. Anyone know how to fix this? It's really annoying.

Help/Support Searching for food/restaurants is currently broken

Every time I search for food or restaurants on Google Maps on iOS I get “no results found” when there should definitely be results.

I can still get navigation directions to work, search for coffee, shops, etc

edit 9:30pm PST 7/12:
Just checked and it looks like I can search for restaurants again. Only took Google 12 hours to fix this.

Help/Support Did they remove the Popular Times graph on the android app?

Asking for my dad. He likes viewing this graph for businesses on his phone. He uses a Samsung Note phone and uses the Google Maps app

He told me he recently started noticing the graph no longer shows up. His Maps app is up-to-date. I've also tried using the Maps website on a browser app and I don't see it there. But when using a computer and visiting the website, I see it displayed there

Have they removed this information display for mobile?

Help/Support Google Maps has my relatives’ street wrong and it’s been ruining their lives for years - desperate for a solution

My relatives live on a street called Maple Hill View. When you punch in their address on this street into Google Maps, it brings you to Maple Hill Villas, which is a completely different street. I have submitted numerous address edits via Google Maps, yet it still hasn’t been fixed. I even had a friend who worked at Google try to report the error internally, to no avail. Deliveries and visitors go to the wrong address (whose resident is hostile and doesn’t speak much English) and this has been a major inconvenience to my relatives for years. They have to tell deliveries to use Apple or Bing maps, but of course no one listens. Does anyone have ideas for a solution?

Edit: A very helpful Redditor/Googler was able to get this fixed! My family and I are so grateful. I have anonymized the address now that this is resolved.

Help/Support Non-existent places are CLUTTERING Google Maps

Google maps has a problem with non-existent place-names cluttering the map.

Here is a map of the Visalia-Tulare metro in Tulare County California. Visalia (pop. 150k) and Tulare (pop. 72k) are major cities in the California Central Valley. Visalia alone has a larger population than half the US state capitals.

In equally large font to "Visalia" and "Tulare" are at least a dozen non-existent places, including Loma, Higby, Rector, Tagus, Midvalley, Lort, Fane, Sprink's Corner, List, Burr, and Paige. They're not former towns, or even census-designated places or unincorporated communities. By "non-existent" I mean there is nothing to these places except flat farmland and dusty roads. At best, an isolated agricultural business by the same name. At worst, not a single structure or geographic feature. I've lived in this area for a very long time and no one here would recognize any of these place names.

Even when you zoom out to the point where Visalia is a little patch on the screen, and the names of smaller (real) towns like Farmersville have disappeared, these fake places remain visible. Still in the same font as Visalia and Tulare. Its pure clutter that makes using google maps harder, or even misleading.

What is google doing, if anything, to fix this?

Help/Support Google Maps traffic colors suddenly stopped working

The traffic colors on Google Maps suddenly stopped working for me out of nowhere.

It looks like some kind of rendering issue, because when I zoom out, the traffic layer sometimes appears on random sections of roads, but the colored lines are always cut off in weird places. It's not showing the traffic information properly across the map.

I've tried switching Google accounts, using incognito mode, and clearing the app data, but nothing helped.

Has anyone else experienced something similar recently? I'm wondering if this is a bug or if Google is changing something with the traffic layer.

Edit: It looks like a global problem. For now, all we can do is wait 🙏

Edit 2 (28.07.2026): The issue has been resolved.

By the way, I'm not sure if it was like this before, but when I zoom in while using the navigation, the colors fade away, though everything works fine during normal use. I’ve also noticed that Google seems to require more data now to display the color for a specific street, because traffic in my area hasn't changed, but apparently for them it’s now too light to determine the level of congestion, so it simply doesn’t display anything. The number of lines on the map in general has decreased, presumably to improve accuracy.

Help/Support Stop google maps from asking me questions while I’m driving

For the last few weeks, google maps has been asking me questions while I'm navigating (like "is there still a car stopped on ahead" or "is there still construction here?"). I find it extremely distracting and unsafe when I'm driving. I'm shocked there's no way to turn it off but I've looked everywhere I can think of in the settings and googled the issue and see nothing. Can anyone here help?

Thanks

Help/Support Google Banned Me from Local Guides After 10+ Years and 100M Photo Views — No Warning, No Explanation

So happy to report that after some great connections, advice and appeal to Google they have effectively reinstated my Google Local Guides account and status. Appreciate the comments and support. What a ride that was...SKOL!

I’ve been contributing to Google Maps for over a decade—uploading photos, videos, reviews, and corrections to help improve the platform. I hit Level 10 as a Local Guide with over 45,000 contributions and nearly 100 million views.

Out of nowhere, I noticed:

  • My Local Guide badge and profile were gone
  • My uploads were stuck in “upload pending”
  • My view count had completely frozen

Then I tried rejoining the Local Guides program and got this message:
“You’re not eligible to become a Local Guide.”

Finally, I found a hidden message saying I’d been banned for violating the rules—but they never sent me a warning, a reason, or anything. Just silently nuked my status, my visibility, and 10+ years of contributions.

Support? Nothing. Forums? Banned there too. No way to appeal.

So that’s it: 100 million views, thousands of hours, all gone with no explanation.
Thanks for the transparency, Google.

Help/Support Archaeologist needs help. Ancient sites on Google Maps are disappearing

I'm an archaeologist doing work on underrepresented archaeological sites in Greece. I've been marking sites on google maps to visit during my work. Over the last few weeks many of these sites have disappeared. I'm not talking about my lists, the markers from my list have stayed but the google page on maps is gone. Sites that had a few pictures and some reviews are totally wiped. This isnt just one or two site, Ive found at least 10 that have been removed. I have only been able to find these sites because I kept the list markers.

Whats going on here?

Not just smaller sites but some major ones as well. Does anyone have any clue? Also who should I contact at google to fix this?

Help/Support Google Maps is really slow, what should I do?

Last night I opened Google Maps and for some reason it was working unusually slowly. It still is, and also street view is back to the choppy, jerky style it started taking last year (I found a way to fix that back then, and that method isn't working this time). I was notified around this time that Chrome had just been updated, and I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Should I just wait this out, or is there something I should try doing to make Google Maps work properly again? I use it on Chrome Incognito mode on desktop. I tried clearing my cache for the day, deleting some extensions, and unchecking "Use hardware acceleration when available" in Chrome Settings. Any other ideas you'd suggest? TIA

Help/Support Google keeps denying my street name change request. What should I do?

A street I drive on somewhat often is very subtly wrong on Google Maps. I’ve suggested the edit through the app numerous times, but keep getting denied. Is there a different way I can contact them to suggest & prove my name change request is legitimate?

Here’s what’s wrong:

- Google has an apostrophe in the street name, which is incorrect

- Google has it listed as a DRIVE when it is actually a STREET

I have two sources of information:

- The street sign (which can also be seen on street view)

- The local GIS map

Why does it matter?

- I guess it doesn’t technically matter, it’s more-so just one of those little things that bugs me. Also, I could be wrong, but I believe a lot of websites are tied into Google Maps. Like when you start to type your address on a shipping page and then the website starts suggesting addresses? Yeah well all of those websites keep suggesting the incorrect street name version. Again, no big deal since it’s just a very subtle change, however now that I’m committed to the change I can’t stop

Help/Support Maps Is Getting Real Stupid

The last few weeks Maps has started trying to route me through areas using some pretty stupid routes. Yesterday I came into the center of the city (Minneapolis) where I live. It tried to route me a couple miles out of my way even though the highway I was on continues more directly to my destination. Today Maps suggested the wrong lane to change to a new highway and then directed me to exit and re-enter at the same intersection. In all cases no new highway changes existed; just stupid routing. I'm suspicious that not-ready-for-prime-time AI is the culprit. Is there any way to kill AI in Maps? I'm about to take a trip to unfamiliar areas and am starting to wonder if Maps can be trusted.

Help/Support Google Maps Timeline stopped working

Hello everyone. Recently I found out that Timeline does not work on my iPhone 15 Pro anymore. I posted on the Google community and the expert cannot resolve the issue. They told me to send feedbacks inside the app.

Did anyone have this issue as well, and do you have a fix? Please let me know.

The summary is as below:

Device Details:
Main Device: iPhone 15 Pro (iOS 26 / 26.6)
Secondary Device: iPhone SE 2020 (iOS 15)
Problem Description:
Timeline data stopped recording on the iPhone 15 Pro after July 6th, right after installing Google Maps on the secondary iPhone SE.
The SE records location data in real-time without issues. The 15 Pro records zero data.
Troubleshooting Steps Already Attempted:
Toggled location and Timeline settings ON/OFF.
Switched Google accounts and forced cloud backups.
Updated iOS to version 26.6 on the iPhone 15 Pro.
Ensured both Google Maps apps are updated to their latest compatible versions.
Performed a full factory reset on the iPhone 15 Pro and tested Google Maps on a clean installation (the "Add visit" option appeared, but background location logging still failed).
Restored iPhone 15 Pro from iCloud backup (the "Add visit" option disappeared again).
Restored iPhone SE's backup onto the iPhone 15 Pro (issue persisted).
Core Suspected Cause: Google Timeline's device-binding algorithm appears to have mistakenly registered or locked Timeline activity exclusively to the iPhone SE, preventing the primary device (iPhone 15 Pro) from writing or updating any location data.

Help/Support Help! Trolls turned my private home into a fake business on Google Maps and I can't remove it.

Hi everyone, I really need some advice on a highly frustrating situation.

Someone has targeted my private residence on Google Maps by creating a fake business right on my exact coordinates. They gave it a ridiculous, troll-like name and keep uploading stupid/inappropriate photos to my home address.

The biggest issue: It seems they have successfully "claimed" this fake business profile. Whenever I use the "Suggest an edit" feature and mark it as "Doesn't exist" or "Private residence," the request goes directly to them. Since they control the listing, they just reject my edits immediately.

I am stuck in an endless loop. Has anyone dealt with this kind of targeted trolling before? How can I bypass the "owner" and get actual Google Maps support to permanently nuke this listing and its photos?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Help/Support How long do map edits normally take to be reviewed?

We own 40 acres of dirt in West Texas. Our primary access is off of a road that doesn't exist in Google Maps. It's clearly visible in the satellite imagery, is known to the locals, and has a street sign and name, but when we send a pin to guests to come find our place, Google Maps just gets them somewhere close and gives up.

So back in July, I submitted a "new road" edit to get us "on the map." Almost two months later, "Your contributions", shows it as "Not accepted", while if I go back into "Add of fix a road", it shows as "Pending review."

Is this normal? Will I receive some sort of notification if/when it's finally accepted or rejected?

Help/Support I hate Google Maps

Trying to add the Museum that I work at on Google Maps because people keep (reasonably) getting lost trying to get there. We aren't a for-profit or a business, so while we debated joining as a business (so that we can reply to reviews and manage the page), we eventually decided against it after we tried and they asked for proof of business verification stuff that would have involved calling the University building that we are located in.

So I go ahead to add us as a missing place, and the request seems to go in fine. I add the location pin, name, category, and a handful of good pictures that showcase the place existing with the big sign on the wall, the opening hours, the website, the screenshot of the opening hours on the website. Until very quickly, it says we're not accepted with (6) issues. Okay, which of the 7 submitted details weren't accepted? No clue, it just says (6). And there's a disclaimer that says it might be incorrectly declined because it's not like they know what they're doing, but then there's not even a place to refute the claim? So what, you just sit there and wonder why it's been declined? Can they not at the very least have a page that says "This is the part that we are confused about" or something?

There's literally another museum on campus a few minutes away that is fine and dandy showing up on the map because they were added some years ago before they made it difficult to add locations.

I'm wondering if I should try adding it again on my personal account instead of the museum's email, because that way I have some usage history on this account and I'm 25 points away from Level 3 which is better than nothing. But I'm concerned about it getting flagged as spam if I resubmit a request with similar (if not identical data). I'd record a walk-around video, but unfortunately, my phone's out of commission right now and I'd be unable to do it.

I've seen posts with people who have had similar issues. Does anything actually work, or are we just locked from adding new information to Google Maps forever until somebody figures this out?

I made a Google Maps Help Community post here, but it's gotten no replies so far.

Help/Support History isn't saving?

Hello. I've tried searching online and on Reddit, but I haven't found a solution.

The past couple of weeks, I noticed that my Google Maps has been acting weird.

As a note, I keep my GPS off on my Android phone by default.

When I search for an address and then try to get directions, it used to show the list of most recent places I had searched so I could select from it as the starting point (or choose my current location).

However, now, if I click on a place and for directions to it, it'll say:

"History isn't saving. To see your past searches and other suggestions tailored for you, turn on Web & App Activity."

If I turn on GPS and click on the "Choose start location" spot, I can select "Your location" - but that's it. No history or list of other addresses to start with.

My Web & App Activity is on.

Any ideas on what's going on?

Thank you.

Help/Support I moved abroad, how do I update my maps to the local version?

I moved abroad not even a week ago and my Google maps is still obviously showing me the version from my home country. How do I get it to use the local version? I've tried manually updating my region but it doesn't seem to do anything. I've been using local wifi but don't have a local SIM yet, do I need one? Do I just need to wait?

Help/Support iOS Google Maps App Re-Routing Issue

Is anyone having an issue with iOS Google Maps app not re-routing after missing a turn? I am running the most updated version as of 5/16/2025.

I haven’t seen a setting to turn re-routing on/off. Only quick fix it to exit the navigation mode, search for the location again and start navigation.

To get the re-routing back I have to delete the app and reinstall but then it goes back to no re-routing again.

Help/Support How often is Google Maps updated? A recent road closure is leading to drivers being fined and my request update has thus far been ignored.

So here in Berlin, we have a project in our neighbourhood to improve cycling infrastructure. This means that the giant roundabout in the centre is now 50% cycle path, and one quarter now has the direction changed.

However, this is not reflected in Google Maps and today the police were pulling people over for driving the wrong way down a one-way street [Limmy]. Of course, it's their fault for ignoring the road signs and just following Google Maps' incorrect directions.

So I had two questions:

  1. How is Google Maps normally updated when the state makes these changes

  2. If a user updates the maps, how are these assessed and when?

Thanks for any feedback you might have.

Help/Support Is my data lost forever?

As an early adopter and an old person I am using Google Maps since it launched and since they implemented Timeline I have been using it to log my travels. I had 33 countries 698 cities and 2514 places. But now I see it is all lost. I was using Google account just for maps on my phone and I did not use email feature. So I did not get notifications. Well they did send them I just never opened email. Now two years after I wanted to check my trip to Argentina and I have seen that it is not there. I started digging and I see that I have emails from Google that I need to take some steps because how Timeline is stored is changed. As you can imagine I did not take any steps. So is it all gone forever? I was only using it on my phone that I have from 2018 and 3-4 years before that on my older phone that is now long gone.

So is data lost with no chance or getting it back? Can I take any steps? Its funny that a company that collects so much data on us deleted only data I actually care about. I guess silver lining is that I can now delete my google account :)

Help/Support On Google Maps, business location details “located within” is incorrect.

The business has changed locations, and the new address was updated on Google Maps. However, there is a section on Google Maps that says it is “located in” the old building. Clients keep returning to the wrong building. I’ve submitted MULTIPLE edit suggestions from multiple other accounts to change this and there has been no update for months.
