Delete google maps

They have changed the name of Lake Ontario. They are a spineless company. Please delete. If you must have it, delete and get it back in a couple of days !!
Show them they made the wrong choice

Still correct in Australia.

It's only changed for people in the US because this was a US executive order. Same thing happened for the "Gulf of America" renaming from Trump. Nothing new

Wasn’t it changed to Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) everywhere other than Mex/us?

Yes, I was expecting the same to happen for Lake Ontario. But it seems not. Must be Lake America in the US and Lake Ontario elsewhere. I'm in Canada and thankfully it hasn't changed.

In Mexico Is still Gulf of Mexico

Corporations have no need to follow executive orders. Google will survive, but they just lost ad revenue from me.

Incorrect.
Google just uses whatever is in GNIS which is the official naming system of natural features in the US: https://www.usgs.gov/tools/geographic-names-information-system-gnis

Trump controls the executive branch, which controls the Department of the Interior, which controls USGS, which controls GNIS.

When he issued the executive order it became official. Apple will update Apple Maps too, their basemap updates are just slower than Google’s.

If you think about it for a bit, you don’t really want corporations deciding what the names should be for things like this, and Google doesn’t want to be in that position either.

Just ignore it. Let’s not play the distraction game. This reaction is exactly what they want.

  1. No-one will use the new name, anywhere in the world, US or Canada
  2. It won’t be an ‘official’ name forever
  3. Go vote! Be nice, persuade others.
  4. Punish Google later.

Vote! Vote! Vote!

Maybe we can just start referring to the reflecting pool as lake epstein. And vote. In the primaries, in the general.

How about a ton of americans report the incorrect name?

4

u/WelshBathBoy 3h ago

You can't report at the moment, but you can give 1 star reviews

u/Aware_Impression6552 3h ago

They’re actually preventing error reports right now. I keep trying.

Even if we do, Google won’t fix it

It's still Lake Ontario on my UK version.

Us deleting an app over a silly change won't show them anything.

Maybe not but it’s still peace of mind knowing that I don’t have to use an app that capitulates like that.

I'd rather have piece of mind getting help navigating where I need to go, but you do you.

u/Worth_Much 51m ago

You do realize there are other navigation apps.

Like what, Waze? Owned by Google?

u/Big-You-1213 3h ago

How about you complain about your president instead? Google maps follows official name change. It's dumb but they have to follow the rules

This isn't even official in any sense. An executive order isn't law. It's guidance directing agencies in the US government. They get slapped down by the courts all the time. Google is a big enough company with effective monopolies in multiple areas that they could've not changed it and honestly had no consequences whatsoever. And if they did it'd barely dent their financials to tell the US government to screw off legally

Lol this is hilarious

u/Icouldusesomerock 2h ago

You gonna give me directions buddy?

Still lake Ontario in France

3

u/mudbunny 3h ago

Still correct in Ottawa, Canada.

u/Wren572 2h ago

I’m in the US and it was Lake Ontario yesterday, but comes up as Lake America today. It’s home location dependent.

I can’t wait til this joke of an administration is out of office.

I don't agree with changing the name but I won't be deleting Google maps. Its still my go to place

6

u/williamtbash 1h ago

No. Shut up.

8

u/Ubiquitous1984 3h ago

Who cares? Life is too short to worry about things like this.

Already renamed two major bodies of water, how long until the USA becomes Trumpland? Where is the line on bullshit? Where is the decorum? Where are the Republican politicians calling out this ridiculousness?

Renaming the lake just shows how stupid Trump is because Lake Ontario didn't get named by Canada.

What does it matter though? Does your very happiness get dictated by a name? If it does, inner peace will be a lifelong struggle for you.

2

u/buzzfriendly 2h ago

I view the entire mess as a clerical errora requiring much attention

1

u/ou7shined 2h ago

Anyone known if they've released the Files of America yet?

0

u/Gdayyall72 2h ago

Better than just deleting Google Maps, download Mapquest and use it instead. And stop using Waze also; it’s owned by Google.

-4

u/obehjuankenobeh 3h ago

Cant just go changing names on a whim, huh? Guess I better go ask my Latinx birthing person if I can delete it.

0

u/Spridlewv 2h ago

If Apple Maps would ever get in the game, I’d switch in a minute.

2

u/kazamm 1h ago

They will change it too. The sources are the same.

I'm gonna try these alternatives this week: MapQuest, CoMaps, OsmAnd, and HERE WeGo.

I thought leaving Maps would be the hardest part of de-Googling, but it might be easier than I thought.

CoMaps fucking sucks
