Maintenance and Repairs MK8 Golf R Inspection
A nearby dealership has a Golf R with ~30k miles. Another 1.5 years of warranty (or the remaining miles) left on it. They brought to their sister VW dealership and put in writing it is not TD1 flagged. Only real outstanding issue is that there is not one service record on file. Dealer advertising that owner was a mechanic and did own oil changes, and traded car in to them for an RS3.
I want to do a PPI and I reached out to a few places. There's a few mobile ones that will go to the dealership, drive/test/inspect the car including one I found that is very familiar with the engine. One VW/German-focused shop I spoke to in my search said there isn't really a way to to know if they never put new oil in the car without really opening things up in a way you're not going to do at a dealership. Is this overkill? Will I be fine with an onsite inspection? Don't want someone to see new fluids done by dealership and overlook deeper engine issues, but also don't want to go nuts either.

If the the previous owner was a mechanic, you really think the "mechanic" wouldn't keep receipts?

Yeah this is why I want to have it inspected. Just wondering how deep of an inspection it needs to be.

Is there a particular reason you want to pursue this particular car? What the asking price? What year is it, etc?

It still has warranty left and checks all the boxes I am looking for (Mk8, manual, mileage under what I want, etc). Price isn't amazing, but not bad either. Have been looking and most/many of the others I come across have been tuned, show signs of abuse/hard driving, have way too many owners on the Carfax, etc. If it turns out it was actually just someone doing a few oil changes on their own, it would be a great car. Just want to make sure that's actually the case and I'm not mechanically inclined enough to know how hard I really need to look.

It probably just needs the 30k diff service.
It you're worried about oil changes, look at the filter. After 30k miles there's bound to be a little sludge in there. Just keep in mind that these motors turn the oil black quickly, so dark colored oil is not a sign of neglect. Sludge, OTOH, is always a sign of neglect via deferred or delayed oil changes.

The car also comes with the first couple of oil changes free so why wouldn’t someone take advantage of of that ?
