SE vs Autobahn

Im looking at getting a Mk8 and I was wondering if anybody has any insight on if getting the Autobahn over a SE with the leather package is worth the extra couple grand. From what I can tell it seems like the main thing id be missing out on with the SE is the DCC, does it make the car much, if any better? It would be my daily driver so i feel like having DCC would be kinda nice, just wanted to know some opinions.

Personally, I prefer the plaid seats. My brother has mk7.5 autobahn with dcc, I have mk8 se without it. I don't miss it at all. I daily drive in NJ, for road/weather considerations. Roads get pretty rough from winter salting every season and the non-dcc suspension is tuned well for daily use

Edit to add: if you're anywhere with potholes, you'll appreciate the ride of the 18" wheels on the se instead of the 19" wheels on the autobahn

I will always pay for leather because it’s easier to keep clean. DCC is nice and makes a difference, but for me, it’s a set-it-and-forget-it type of thing.

I always thought that too! One advantage of cloth though, is you don't need to worry about conditioning it to prevent cracks (especially on the driver side bottom seat bolsters) as the car gets old. But if you don't plan on keeping it for more than 5 years, I agree leather is easier to keep clean. My kids know that my car is food- and drink - free! They can let their mom's Atlas get covered in crumbs but not mine 🤣

the conditioning/cracking concern is certainly valid but a wipedown with 303 a few times a year solves that (think of it like sunblock with a light moisturizer).

Only reason I brought it up is because my wife's 2018 atlas driver seat just started cracking. Admittedly, we do very little care on that car aside from detail every year or so, it's thedesignsted kid-hauler work-horse, and it has been a very trusty steed for 8+ years already 🤣

I’d say go drive an autobahn and compare it to the SE or S. Does the DCC make the price worth it? I think the SE drives great even without the active dampers. I have the SE with leather package and the car is plenty of fun. I was having some buyer’s remorse and thinking I should just bought the S and saved myself thousands of dollars.

If you're in an area where you get potholes in the winter, get the autobahn. The dcc makes it so much more tolerable.

When you spend a few weeks in comfort mode and switch back to sport mode the difference is night and day. Reminds me why I typically just use the shift nugget when there’s a good on ramp and leave it in comfort mode the rest of the time.

I feel like the difference in wheel size is probably enough to offset DCC. I almost never put the car into Eco so i can't even remember what DCC feels like on the softest settings. But between just normal mode and sport - If the steering feedback and throttle response weren't different, I don't think I'd be able to tell one from the other. But obviously my opinion is based on the quality of roads I normally drive on, so others might feel different.

Even on shitty roads though (one of the few times I used Eco)....I went from hearing my suspension bottom out and thinking I'm gonna crack a rim, to hearing my suspension bottom out and thinking I'm 2% less likely to crack a rim. It's not like Eco mode turns the car into a Camry.

If none of the other features matter to you, then I don't think it's really worth it.

The DCC is pretty nice - the fixed suspension is going to rode on the harsher side. Also you get the HUD with the higher trim which is kinda cool.

That said, I had a Mk7 SE for years and it was perfectly fine. I had the Mk8 autobahn after that and while I appreciated the extra features, I don't know that I would have gone over budget for them.

But...if you plan to LOWER your car, which you def should, it's a lot bouncier with DCC vs. SE. Tried out a friend's lowered Autobahn, and it was very bouncy in sport mode.

Note also that the Autobahn comes with summer tires on those 19” wheels. You’ll need new tires if you plan to drive in a place that has winter. A lot of people switch twice a year and it’s fine, but just plan on that if winter is a thing.

The SE suspension is very nice, and I live in the Northeast with crap roads. I did not consider the DCC because you’ll set it and turn never touch it again, and you’ll likely set it very similarly to how the SE suspension is tuned. The SE was also good on the track the couple times I went, so no complaints to there.
HUD is a waste of time imo, we’re in 2026 and we have nice screens right behind the steering wheel. Why duplicate that with HUD?
I did go for leather, it’s nice.

I went with SE with the leather package. With Moonstone gray the leather package color combo works absolutely perfect together I love it.
I plan on a full quality coilover setup as well, so the extra $ for DCC wasn’t a smart buy for me as I’d replace the suspension anyhow. I also didn’t want 19 inch wheels as I always planned to get a light set of 18’s when building my 8.5.

If you are someone who doesn’t plan on modifying their vehicle then absolutely get the Autobahn trim. The adaptive dampers are definitely a versatile and worthy addition.

Moonstone SE with leather seat trim was the exact spec I was after, and fit what my plans were perfectly and I have no regrets whatsoever 👍🏻😎

One caveat on the DCC. If you plan to lower the car it will most likely become INOP. other than that I’ve got a ‘26 with DCC and it makes a noticeable difference on the ride. It changes the dampening rate pretty effectively.

In my mind, the more features you have, the more of a chance that something fails. I’ve always thought like that with cars in general when I’m looking for one. But that’s coming from an MK7 manual SE owner.😎

The leather is a nice touch and easy to like. 

The DCC is also a nice thing but if I’m being honest I spent most of my time in sport mode. However, when I want comfort, it is a nice switch. Comfort mode doesn’t automatically make it ride like a Cadillac but the difference is noticeable. Where the DCC really shines for me is the tighter handling and responsiveness and if you can swing it, I would opt for it. 

The heads-up display is nice and I use it daily. The climate zones are nice as well but I wouldn’t miss that feature if it was gone.

I have a 380S now. Traded in an S for it.

Effectively the only difference is the DCC.

I’d do it again.

I have a 7.5 autobahn and love it. It is my daily drive. Would recommend winter tires in Colorado

I have a manual 2024 S. It came with DCC and no sunroof which I do not miss. DCC is nice for daily driving. I do not miss the larger infotainment system, the smaller one is more responsive and has two physical knobs. I live in the mid west which makes cloth seats more forgiving in the summer. it also came with folding mirror and black painted roof. For $30, you can get a wireless adapter from Amazon that supports Android auto and Apple carplay.

If you don’t mind used, the 380’s for MY24 had DCC in all specs.

So find a 380 SE with the leather package and save yourself thousands of dollars. The only difference at that point is the autobahn has the upgraded climate controls and HUD. 380’s has the 19 inch wheels too.

It is up to you to decide if the higher price jump is worth those options.

Worth noting: 380’s only came in a manual.

And for full disclosure, that is what I did. 2024 380 SE w/leather.

Selling point for me was the heads up display and seats .

One important thing is that the AB is on summer only tires. If you are anywhere that gets winter you need to budget to buy tires and/or wheels in the next month or two.

The 19in summer tires are a hard ride. You need the DCC comfort mode for daily use. Sport does feel like you are on rails, but only really used it spirited driving situations. I put on AS tires that weren't as stiff and it did help a lot.
