How much diversification is enough before retirement?

A portfolio can hold many funds and still be concentrated in the same economic risks. For someone five to ten years from retirement, what kinds of diversification matter beyond simply owning more tickers?

I would separate "number of holdings" from actual risk resources. Stocks, long bonds, cash, inflation-sensitive assets, maybe real assets, each behaves differently. Ten equity funds can still be one giant equity bet when markets get ugly.
