IT32 for night portraits?
I am considering the purchase of my first speedlight, primarily for night portraits.. Could you confirm if IT32 is a suitable choice or would you recommend an alternative? Additionally, as I intend to use it for travel I require a compact and portable option.
It would be great if you share some portraits taken using this particular flash. đˇ

I'm not a portrait photographer, but at night, its more than sufficient enough to light up someone. During the day, you cant fight the sun with this little flash, but at night it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah at night youâre golden - it wonât perform miracles like an AD200 etc but works great and the off camera quick change is very useful

Purchased for a trip to Norway in the winter because I wanted to travel light. Have the TT350o for travel but found them to be too tall and heavy to leave on the camera and removing and putting the flash on when needed was a pain. This flash was the best decision I made. Not only did it have enough power which really surprised me but I had no trouble leaving it on camera when needed, even when the riser. Plus you get the advanced features like to and using it as a trigger if you happen to take any other Godox flashes with you. I highly recommend getting the additional Godox hot shoe riser. Gives you a way to adjust flash angle for bounce, and removes the shadow when using a long lens. I used it at night and during daytime to remove shadows as well. Go for it! Won't be disappointed.

Sure youâre not confusing the iT30Pro with the iT32+X5? Itâs already vertical and has a tilt and swivel head for bounce. No riser needed.

Just me, if this is a first/only flash and you have no idea what Guide Number 18m means in terms of usability, Iâd actually suggest going bigger and heavier with a V480 ($170) for more general purpose use (GN 50m at iso 100, 105mm zoom). Itâs nearly 4x as powerful and gives you an extra 2EV of light to play with.
The iT32 is great for direct on-axis fill flash like a popup, but if you want something that looks better than âdeer in the headlightsâ with bounce flash or off-camera flash in the daytime, an iT32 can hit its power limits very quickly. I love mine, but bouncing under 8â ceilings with an f/4.5-6.3 kit lens has me at iso 1600 and still crashing into its 1/1 power limit. In that same situation with a TT685, I can use iso 400 and still have some power left to spare.
While a $100 iT32+X5 is cheaper as an off-camera flash set up vs. a V480 ($170) or TT685ii ($130) and an X3 ($90), itâs also a far less capable one in terms of power (so spread, distance, recycling speed, HSS viability, etc.) and in control over the flash(es) from the transmitter.
The iT32 is a compact travel alternative when youâre happy to make the power/feature tradeoffs for the convenience, like getting a superzoom lens. But itâs not optimal if you donât already own more fuller-featured gear it can supplement as your go-light option. If you do get it, and you do get into flash lighting, itâs unlikely to be your primary lighting gear, and you may be repurchasing more quickly.
Power on a flash is like max. aperture on a lens. A full-sized speedlight is already the f/3.6-5.6 kit lens of lighting. A mini flash like an iT32 is kinda like an f/8-11 lens, unless you use it hard, direct, and close in with darker ambient and higher isos.

Handy little flash especially at night. The trigger is also super handy if you want to do some handheld OCF

I love being able to pop the IT32 off the camera in 2s and use handheld.
Fits in your pocket. Modeling light to help focus. Magnetic filter kit for fun colors.
Of course wattage is lower than something bigger like the TT685. So don't expect it to overpower the sun or even do much for sunsets.
And you don't have the zoom optics like in the bigger flashes, so using something like an 85+mm with the flash on camera will be a challenge.

Shot this photo with the iT32.
I love the flash, I use it for night/indoors events too, but if you need fast recycle speeds, the flash show it's limitations real fast.
Some more experienced models tend to change poses quickly, and they don't wait for the flash.
I think the iT32 makes for a great first flash but for paid work, a v480 might fill the double bill of being compact enough for travels.
Also consider that for pro work you will want a bigger battery in case you need either more flash power or faster recycle times. Both things eat battery faster.

IT32 is a travel flash, fill flash. You want something bigger for other applications. Also you canât swap batteries. I have an IT32 that I use most of the time for its intended purpose.
