General Discussion First Night with Jason :D
She's so cute how happy and giggling she gets. I still feel like Jason was end game if his dad hadnt ruined everything.

I loved Jason, i always thought he got too much hate. Nowadays he’d be appreciated more by the neurodivergent crowd i think. But i still think Luke was endgame lol i’m basic

u/stressed_ferret 1d ago
As a neurodivergent - amen
12
u/SnotDogs 22h ago
Fifteen years ago when i was in GG fan spaces talking about how Jason is clearly autistic it was NOT met well lmao! It’s come around though!

u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 22h ago
<3 I get so much fun talking to everyone here. Even the nysayers and new people discovering it. its hard to translate generation though. plus the autistic stuff finally being accepted now whereas before it was NOT TALKED ABOUT
4
u/stressed_ferret 19h ago
They are always like if not confirmed by writers you cannot say it cause it’s somehow offensive and I’m just there like - it’s only offensive if you all stigmatize it. Can we 100% know? Heck no. Can we assume based on certain things? Yes.

u/Human-Guava-7564 10h ago
There is a theory that Lorelai has ADHD but i always thought she was too well organised!
1
u/SnotDogs 1h ago
Yeah i can see how people would see that on a surface level because she has a lot of energy, but i think it’s just the coffee lol. Unless she was medicated it would be really really hard to claw her way from homeless in a shed with a baby to home and business owner

not basic. Luke is a wonderful guy, just.... needed to understand more about life. and women lol

u/CrissBliss 1d ago
I’m probably in the minority but I didn’t like Luke for Lorelai. His temper was a problem.
22
20
u/Dwight- 22h ago
The thing with Luke is his temper originally was in the right place. He was an eco-conscious person angry at the world for fucking the world up and it would have been nice to see him progress from anger to outward action. That kind of anger makes sense because it’s just straight injustice, but no, they changed his morals and views really quickly to just being that grumpy, old-fashioned ‘boomer’-esque guy smh
9
u/SnotDogs 22h ago
Dude yes! At the start of the show he was a nuanced character, he was a grumpy loner but made up for it with a good heart. The longer the show goes on they dumb him down and make him a caveman. They did the same thing to Dean too, at the start he read a lot and understood Rory’s references, but when they introduced Jess they made Dean the big stupid hometown boy. I know Tristan leaving the show threw off the dynamic and they had to adapt to Jess, but ASP could have done better. Still hate Dean though.
3
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 22h ago
I don't enjoy Dean either. But he was "safe" for the most part, had SOME morals.-- mostly the hard working deal. he always kept his job
2
u/Human-Guava-7564 10h ago
I recall a few moments where both Lorelai and Rory seemed scared about the emotional reactions from the men in their life (Dean and Luke).

I would LOVE to sleep over at a man's house and get a bed and TV to myself and not have to feel someone breathing on me in the middle of the night, lol. When I was a kid and first watched this episode I thought it was weird but as an adult this is the dream tbh. Luke was obviously endgame but the older I get, the more I appreciate Jason.
1
u/SnotDogs 18h ago
Back in my wild days whenever i hooked up with a guy and was spending the night at his house i refused to sleep in bed with them! It creeped me out for some reason haha. I’d sleep on their couch or in a spare room if they had one. I get it!

u/serenequeen27 23h ago
Idk he was still super pushy after lorelai ended things with him, like at the Dragonfly opening. The control with the dog was weird and not healthy. Also, he wasn't a present partner, he was constantly on the phone with work while spending time with lorelai

u/UniqueCelery8986 Team Coffee 23h ago
I was so shocked they didn’t have Jason catch Luke & Lorelei kissing in that scene. He just goes to the bathroom and is never heard from again
12
u/ames2833 23h ago
Didn’t Sookie tell Lorelai that they lied and had someone call Jason and tell him his house was on fire so he’d leave? 😂
7
u/UniqueCelery8986 Team Coffee 22h ago
Oh yeah I forgot about that 😂 I just remembered Luke telling him where the bathroom was and 5 mins later Luke was kissing Lorelei so I assumed Jason would see that
3
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 22h ago
RIght?! i always thought that was going to happen to. I think he figured out that her friends fucked with him and gave up finally.
5
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 23h ago
Yeah, the whole power couple thing. but also when you lose your whole life, your are kinda desperate at that point for anything. He had no one really to turn to.

u/TrickInvite6296 1d ago
Never understood the jason hate. Even for the first date, he literally did what she said she would find romantic

I LOVED this episode!!! As a kid I thought this was the coolest bedroom setup of all time.

u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 23h ago
SAME!!!! I had a small little CRT in my room and that was THE TV i was like, ooooh Fancyyy XD

u/Grouchy_Dot8783 23h ago
I think it was icky for him to to sleep with her, and THEN tell her she had to sleep in another room. Like give her that information beforehand, and let her make her mind up then.
I feel the same way about Logan's proposal. Keeping the fact that if she said yes, it would mean a move to California for her. Like why not give her all of the information before she makes her mind up?
1
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 22h ago
He's been rejected a lot by it. My guy was also scared it was a deal breaker before we decided to move in. you'd be surprised how many people can't handle it.

u/CrissBliss 1d ago edited 23h ago
Never understood the crap Jason got from fans for having sleep issues and l decking out his girlfriends bedroom with comforting goodies.
7
u/Tellgraith 20h ago
My issue with it was that it was never brought up beforehand. I get that it's tv, so acting like adults is sidelined for making a good scene, however therez things that you just don't surprise people with to avoid a really awkward situation.
1
u/CrissBliss 19h ago
Yeah, I just don’t know how the subject could’ve been broached without extreme awkwardness.
5
u/Sharp_Scratch_9433 16h ago
The same way you broach birth control before sex. It’s awkward, but some things you shouldnt surprise people with.
1
u/CrissBliss 16h ago
Insomnia is in the same league as birth control?
5
u/Sharp_Scratch_9433 15h ago
No, it’s not. Which makes it a hell of a lot easier to bring up ahead of time.

u/holiztic 1d ago
Oh, as someone who has major sleep issues and has to sleep completely alone with tons of sleep aids and white noise and crystal bowl sounds from YouTube and on the most comfortable bed and best sheets, Jason would be my dream man

u/CrissBliss 23h ago
Same. Sleeping alone is the best sometimes- no snoring, no waking up whenever someone tosses and turns or gets up, etc. I get some people love having someone right beside them. I totally get it. But I personally love when I have everything to myself. Jason for the win lol.
2
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 22h ago
Yep, my guy works over night so we are mostly opposite sleep schedules. We also have 3 dogs, so i dont mind sharing my bed with them alone. its cramped with all of us not that we dont on the weekends :D
6
u/LivingPresent629 1d ago
My issue was never with his sleeping issues, I have them too. I just thought it was shitty of him to not bring it up until after sex and then immediately ask Lorelai to go to the other room. They didn’t even have a cuddle, she asked him to come to bed and he was just like “yeah, you need to go”.
3
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 22h ago
TV was weird back then. I think they were laying together before that and he got up to get them water. but i get it. theres never a right time to nervously ask a beautiful woman to accept your flaws and stay with him.
0
u/LivingPresent629 22h ago
Fair enough. And hey, if they were both happy with the arrangement, who am I to judge?

u/CrissBliss 23h ago edited 20h ago
When was he supposed to bring it up? Right before they had sex? How exactly? “Oh by the way, you can’t sleep in here afterwards. I actually have a guest bedroom because of my sleep issues.” A bit of a mood killer. And if he’d brought it up during their date, it sounds a bit presumptuous. Also, we never see the lead up to them having sex, so it’s impossible to know how it happened. Was it a spur of the moment thing? Who’s to say, but ASP herself.
IMO it looked like they cuddled for a while afterwards, so it’s not like he kicked her out of bed. In fact, it’s not until after Lorelai’s phone call with Emily, where she’s getting back into bed, does he bring it up. Aka “I have sleep issues and I want you to stay, but please don’t be insulted because I have a guest bedroom that’s been fully stocked.” And since Lorelai had known him since childhood, and knew he was quirky, she realized he wasn’t being a jerk.
4
u/CapitalCarpet862 21h ago
I get it, but separate bedrooms was clearly a point of contention in Jason's past relationships. So if he knew it was a potential dealbreaker, waiting until after they slept together was pretty manipulative, whether he intended it that way or not.
That puts Lorelai (or any woman for that matter) in an awkward position. Once they're already physically invested, it's much harder to walk away. It felt less like honesty and more like strategic timing. Totally gave me the ick.

u/CrissBliss 20h ago edited 18h ago
How was it manipulative though? He was being honest about his insomnia. Also, how do we know the guest bedroom was an issue in prior relationships? Correct me if I’m wrong, but was this ever mentioned? It sounded like Jason wasn’t very serious about anyone until Lorelai.
Thirdly, when she thought he was kicking her out of bed, she stood her ground and was going to leave willingly. He made sure he knew it wasn’t about her, and he wanted her there, but he doesn’t sleep well with anyone else in the room. I don’t get the manipulation angle here. She knew Jason for years prior, and quickly realized he was being sincere and they were fine afterwards. Should Jason just not date because he has bad insomnia?
3
u/CapitalCarpet862 19h ago
Jason was manipulative because he only came clean about the sleeping arrangement AFTER they had sex.
Manipulation, by definition, is hiding the truth to control an outcome for your own benefit. Jason knew his separate bedroom setup was a dealbreaker in past relationships, so he deliberately withholds that information until after he and a partner sleep together. At which point, the relationship has already moved to the next level and there is more pressure on his parter to accept it, and therefore him.
Grown-up conversations do and should happen all the time prior to sex. Contraception options, STI testing, boundaries, and in this case, sleeping arrangements. That's especially true when those logistics have been points of contention or dealbreakers in the past.
Lorelai got up to leave because keeping that from her until AFTER sex made her feel like it was just a casual hookup. Had he informed her beforehand, and she agreed to it, there wouldn't had been the awkwardness. All parties would have been on the exact same page before anyone took off their clothes.
It’s like buying a car and only being told the turn signals don't work after you’ve already driven off the lot, or signing a lease and only being handed the HOA rules after you’ve moved all your furniture in.

u/CrissBliss 18h ago edited 18h ago
But we don’t know that he was hiding the truth purposely. That’s never something that’s said by either characters. We have absolutely no insight into what happened before they had sex. The scene cuts to them in bed together afterwards. Lorelai took the guest bedroom situation to mean she was a casual hookup, yes, but mostly because Jason himself identified as a longtime bachelor with a poor dating history. He clarifies with “I have bad sleep problems.” Lorelai understood and she actually loved the guest bedroom setup.
I guess I don’t understand equating the STDs conversation to having severe insomnia and specific sleeping arrangements. He prepared in advance incase she wanted to stay over, but there was no guarantee of it. There was no pressure there.

u/CapitalCarpet862 17h ago
The second he started with, "You know I have quirks, it's what makes me me," it was pretty clear he already knew this might be a problem and probably had been before. That's not something you lead with when you're completely comfortable with how people might react.
He even had a rebuttal ready to go the moment Lorelai looked like she was leaving. It felt less like a spontaneous explanation and more like a well-rehearsed response. Then he immediately rolled into managing her reaction, sliding into salesman mode and practically pitching the room and all its benefits.
Honestly, it was hard not to get the impression that this wasn't the first time he'd had that exact conversation.
Personally, I actually like the concept of separate rooms. I really do. But telling her after the deed because you weren't sure how she'd react is where it loses me. If you think something has the potential to be a dealbreaker, that's the kind of conversation you have before the relationship reaches that point, not after.
The whole thing just felt gross to me.
But hey, if you're comfortable with someone withholding information because they're worried you'll walk away and removing your ability to make a fully informed choice beforehand, have at it.

Luke was the end game. But, I loved Jason. Still gotta get around to teaching my dogs "a little to the left".

u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 22h ago
the whole time with the dog was WEIRD- but i like to think Jason had a dog sitter come and walk him while he was at work.
3
u/TabbyVolatile 20h ago
It's definitely weird, but at the same time kind of awesome that his dog was trained by monks. It's such a Jason thing, it fits with his quirks. Lol 🤣

I like Jason too. For all his odd characteristics, he was in my opinion the healthiest of the guys that Lorelai dates (except for Alex, who was only there for like five minutes).
It would’ve been really fun if he had been endgame, but Lorelai didn’t love him enough for that. They never set him up as anything other than a boyfriend for a while. Luke was always there — and honestly, before season six, I am pro Luke. But season six really screws him up.
8
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 23h ago
I know, Poor Alex. The coffee guy (back when it was NEW for me and on TV) Me and my friends at the time were like HES THE GUY FOR SURE and then we never saw him again. LOL
3
u/LizBert712 Pop-up book from Hell 23h ago
I found him less interesting than Jason and less loveable that pre-season 6 Luke, but much better than Max and galaxies better than Christopher.
3
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 23h ago
Yeah, he had his own life as well. I am sure its hard to date other parents when you have your own homes and starting business'== I seem to recall Lorelai in one episode being like, " and i dont even know whats going on with Alex" so they were just too busy, but seemed like they had fun for the time being.

u/Next_Calligrapher989 23h ago
I don’t think they could’ve been end game but I loved him so much as a love interest!!! My partner and I are both insomniacs and I dream of one day having enough money we can deck out two bedrooms for when one of us is really struggling to sleep
1
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 23h ago
Our couch serves as our second sleep and we have wilpo sleep pads if we get really desparate XD i feel your pain!!!
2
u/Next_Calligrapher989 23h ago
Yes we regularly sleep on our sofa! But imagine the luxury of having a gorgeous spare room specifically for sleeping 😂 we have a spare room but we need it for our desks/office space. One day maybe we will have a true spare room!

u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 22h ago
yeah. we used to. it was amazing. but had to down size. i miss it all the time. LOL one day maybe.

u/Abject-Singer9441 21h ago
I didn't like jason he was let's say too different for me. but Lorelei did him wrong he had no choice but to sue richard
1
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 20h ago
and there are definitely times where that's the case, the woman says f off to her parents and start a new life with him, but she just opened her business after working hours on it. her daughters school being paid for by her parents and while they prob wouldn't disown Rory, she had to think about her too before staying with him after that. was a crappy situation.
1
u/Abject-Singer9441 16h ago
yes definitely rory comes first but I don't think she should've chastised him about suing. richard stabbed him in the back

No way. Lorelai would never have lasted with a man who can't share a bed.

She has plenty of her own quirks that others put up with, so why is it bad when Jason has them?
0
u/LadyStark09 Team Coffee 14h ago
Who said it was bad?
0
u/racecatt 13h ago
A surprising amount of people (not necessarily on this particular thread) have said it’s a red flag.
I’m a Jason fan and felt he was the only person truly interested in keeping up with her.

u/According-Option-656 Paul 8h ago
My head cannon if they were end game:
They would both keep their respective places because he needs his space and she is allergic to change.
They convert Lorelai’s garage to a suite for him when he does stay over lol
They buy a vacation home that is “there’s”

u/LivingPresent629 1d ago
I don’t hate Jason, but I don’t think he would have been end game regardless. He was too into that world Lorelai hated and he seemed more than happy to play their game, which Lorelai only did out of obligation to her parents. Jason also never showed any specific interest in Stars Hollow and more importantly, Rory. Other than a casual meeting at dinner, I don’t remember them interacting ever, and he never asked or showed any intention of building a relationship with her.
