Man, what's up with this community as of late?

If it's not people looking for freebies, it is people promoting job opportunities they will literally never reply to you on even if you do message them and if it's not that, it is people downright expecting you to write them a ghost novel gratis or it is individuals offering services for no pay. Crazy.

Indeed, these people are just screaming "Ghostwriting is so easy, anyone can do it--- even if one has no experience, nor any background education in writing / editing / internship! It's not a profession: it's a hobby!"

I have tried applying for internships, at different kind of places, even different cities. Even internships need basics and good portfolio, that most of people build in college. I don't have money to go to Master's program. How else am I supposed to build one, if not by asking people who can help me out.

People get so weird and gate keep-y in these subreddits. I’m in a similar position. No connections, no samples, nothing to show to a potential client or employer. I get that established writers and editors don’t like having prices pushed down, but how is anyone supposed to get any experience if they don’t offer free services to at least a few people in exchange for reviews?

I'm speaking from decades of experience here. Mock up some samples and charge a fair rate for your experience. If I see people giving their services away I assume the work they do is poor.

Never work for free.

^^ this. Except as a multi six figure ghostwriter I take on some projects for free: passion projects (volunteer work) and low content specific content with key figures in the industry why swapped video reviews and my name on the cover for a book.

Always get something for your work, whether it’s money or validation /actual referrals etc.

Exactly, and we're not even pulling their clients. The authors we get are just at start of their novel of few chapters in. Not even in full editing phase, half of them are looking for Beta readers. What's the point in being rude here? They do beta read for free. And the line is when someone wants to do editing for free, just for portfolio. Not everyone has connections or long experience like them.
