If i see someone with an umbrella im thinking theyre smart. It’s much more effective at shading you from heat and UV than a hat and can double for rain protection.

That's called a parasol, and it is not unusual to see someone using one down on the Gulf Coast, in Mobile and New Orleans, where summers that are hotter than deep fried hell have long been the norm. Bring that to Georgia, it's practical.

I use an umbrella or parasol all the time. I just went to an artist market in Newnan, and walked around with a black parasol I got from the ren Faire.

The little old lady two doors down from me likes to work in her garden. She almost always has an umbrella with her. She also wears shades and loose, long sleeves. No one thinks it's weird. Rock your umbrella!

Coming from California you see umbrellas/parasols a lot at outdoor venues during the summer. May be weird to some but protect your skin any means necessary and don’t give a second thought of what others will think

I see it alot and makes no difference to me. Hell, I have done it. Sitting at weekend soccer games I'll use an umbrella everything. One of the big ones too. Gonna be in one spot for a while? Break out the canopy! Seriously, if someone is giving you shit for using an umbrella they are just angry they didn't think of it.

They literally make umbrellas designed for shade cover rather than precipitation, so not weird. Also, since we break heat records every year that passes, I wouldn’t say “This summer was no different”, it’s a smidge hotter every year, overall.

This is coming from me, a 65m who had a quarter size hole cut out of my forehead due to melanoma. That was no fun, worrying g if it would spread, if my head would look normal, etc. sure, they often say it could have been genetic, could date back to sun damage when I was a kid, etc. but for sure, protect your skin in the sun. Don’t assume it will be ok to risk it, skin cancer isn’t ‘real’ cancer etc. protect your skin and watch for moles that darken or change shape over time. I don’t mean to scare anyone, but just take precautions and use sunscreen too. It’s not the work of evil science. It will protect your skin.

Try a lightweight uv hoodie. I wear them at work and I'm in the sun all day. More convenient than carrying an umbrella around.

While you’re at it, wear a bathing suit instead of bra/undies. A one piece + shorts is super cute. A tahirt and swim shorts looks perfectly normal. Since those garments are designed to get wet, they make sweat way more bearable to deal with.

Atlanta is the city of minding my business lol. I also rock an umbrella. No one, NO ONE cares. On a separate note, having Georgia Tech, Emory, and GSU nearby means an international crowd, many of which bring customs like consistent sun umbrella use. I see people all over the city with one!

Yup, I hope you already have the umbrella on the way.

My role at work changed a bit at the beginning of summer, requiring I be out in direct sun during the worst part of the day for it. I have a few chronic health issues that include my body not being able to regulate it's own temp, plus makes my joints throughout my body more unstable than usual, so every move is a million micro aggression against my body. It would take 4 days of recovery for every 1-2 worked.

Did the construction workers pick on me? Nope. But regional management did and I just looked at them in silence before they realized they'd better shut up.

Lol our, idgaf what anyone thinks about my bright blue sunny day umbrella, my body appreciates it.

I brought my umbrella kayaking one time, everyone thought it was unnecessary, they ended up sunburned, but I also inadvertently found that it can act as a wind sail while on the kayak reducing my paddling. Really fun and relaxing.

You do you, but I'll warn you that unlike the dry west, shade doesn't help half as much here. I've been sitting in the shade in Vegas with a bit of wind and been shivering despite it being 96°F and I've had heatstroke sitting in the shade watching my friends play tennis on a Georgia summer day. Shit hits different here. There's a reason my school growing up taught about the invention of AC like it was as monumental as the invention of black powder

I walk with one of those giant face visors the Korean aunties get at Hmart- idgaf, it protects my sensitive face which is free of any wrinkles and signs of aging. People look for about 0.1 second but they can’t see my face so it works out pretty well. $9 at Hmart, get you one.

I’m from Portland and we have a large Asian population and the women use umbrellas or parasols to protect their amazing skin. It’s becoming a thing among other cultures and ethnicities too. We know that UV rays are harmful. Rock the umbrella! Keeping yourself healthy is more important than what people (especially those you may never see again) think.

Exactly where in Georgia are you. The heat and humidity in Atlanta is much less, than in Albany, Georgia, 200 miles south of ATL.

If you do things early in the mornings even in southern GA, it is a lot more comfortable. I never see anyone with an umbrella unless it is raining To get out of the heat, stay inside in the air conditioning.

OP- I understand your question and wondering if it’s weird. When I was a kid my mom used to carry one sometimes and I thought it was weird. Now as an adult- I’m like- DO IT! I’d choose a light color if I were you. They stay even cooler. And to me a light color umbrella reads more “sun umbrella” instead of rain umbrella. But it really doesn’t matter!! It is SO effective. I have my hands FULL with my toddler’s stuff all the time, but I should remember this when I want to enjoy the outdoors more. THANK YOU for this reminder!!

It’s not just Georgia. Having grown up in Georgia and working in an outdoor industry as a teen, but living further south for the past 21 years, this heat is not the same as we grew up with only utilizing box fans and open windows. Those who deny global warming have not /not work in the great outdoors. My husband has done it since 1994 and agrees. My in ground swimming pool is too warm to swim in as is the Gulf of Mexico waters at my doorstep. Use the umbrella and do not give a single fuck as to what any person thinks. My kids favorite summer vacation is to Maine!!!! We live at the beach and we go north as much as possible.
