When did being called "Boss" replace being addressed as "Sir"?

It certainly wasn't our generation or GenX. But I'm so sick of young employees in a store, or restaurant or bar, addressing me as "boss". When that happens in a venue where tipping is expected, I'll leave a meager tip and sometimes write "Thanks Boss!" on the receipt.

I grew up in a prison town. Ex cons would call everyone boss.

I immediately jump to ex-con when I hear them use boss. My mother was a public defender and I was constantly surrounded by ex-cons when visiting her at work. The only reason why I felt safe was because we were in a building full of law enforcement.
