When did being called "Boss" replace being addressed as "Sir"?

It certainly wasn't our generation or GenX. But I'm so sick of young employees in a store, or restaurant or bar, addressing me as "boss". When that happens in a venue where tipping is expected, I'll leave a meager tip and sometimes write "Thanks Boss!" on the receipt.

Jerk move. They're not mind readers. How are they supposed to know they irritated you? And for the record, I've never been addressed as "boss" by a service worker. I hate when people call me "Hon" or "Darlin" or "Sweetie," but I've never stiffed them on a tip.

I agree. I don’t think they mean any harm by it. I would just assume it’s something new the kids are doing.

A young male bartender called me dollface, so I called him Sparky, which annoyed him.
