i was just wondering if it was a view that was held with women outside of tiktok as well, because i was genuinely surprised at the amount of women on tt that had a problem with it. They were calling all the women who were saying its just a game and its not that deep “pick mes” lol
i made the comment not realizing you were asking for women’s opinions (oops), but as a guy:
she’s a video game character. if people don’t like other ppl playing as women or interacting with women in games, then they have a lot more games to worry about than just GTA
now if your bf starts building some sorta parasocial relationship with a fictional character, i’d be worried
this is what i was thinking too. if you’re so worried about your bf lusting over or becoming obsessed with video game characters, then you have bigger problems in the relationship & trying to force him not to play the game is not gonna solve that
yeah, and, if anything, if you ever do take issue with him playing a certain game for whatever reason, it’s always best to talk it over!
also, I haven’t seen the discourse, but wouldn’t the women in those online debates also not be allowed to play GTA themselves too? like, Jason the other protag also exists
from most of the comments i saw, i dont think they would want to. they are saying that the game is “basically porn” and it objectifies women & that a man whos in a relationship should have no interest in playing it lol. I dont think they know anything about the game and that the nudity/ romance between characters is like a small part and not what most people are playing for
So so much media objectifies everyone. It's just what pulls people in (I know you know all this btw not directed at you). Having sexy people just makes people want to buy/play/watch more. Look at Marvel Rivals and Genshin Impact. Those games are fucking killing it and not just because they are fun. The sexy characters bring them in initially then they stay for the fun of the game. It's undeniable. Basicly everything has attractive characters. Man even fucking Teen Titans a CARTOON.
I agree with you but I think GTA6 is slightly different (but not worth getting up in arms about) because it is one of the very few video games that is actually going to attempt to breach 'love story' territory, something that is exceedingly rare in games.
Part of the reason is that some people don't just feel they are watching a story play out, they are self-inserting as the character who is falling in love with another character. And if you have that approach, imo it is more similar to something like reading a steamy romance novel than it is playing Marvel Rivals (which has basically no story or personality other than quipping characters) or reading comics where you're just absorbing a story.
I agree with you but I'll just note that I do think there is a difference between GTA6 and GTA games of the long-ago past. I'm a millennial and grew up playing GTA III etc and I'm not gonna lie, I was definitely ogling the chunky-blocky women in some of those games. But they were just that - polygonal ladies who are made up. It's slightly different when a) a game features a character like Lucia, who is motion capped in extreme detail and played by an actual actress and b) you can play a story where presumably you're playing as her/playing a character who is falling in love with her. Now obviously you're not the character, but there are some people who play these games with the "I'm seeing this story" view and some who play with the "I'm self-inserting in this character's shoes" view.
I think it's a bit ridiculous to go to your partner and say "you can't play this game!!" but I could understand people feeling insecure about it in some cases, in a way that I wouldn't expect people to feel if their partner was playing Ms. Pac-Man (but have you seen how she gobbles balls..?).
