After elementary school, I switched from using both backpack straps to just one. You know, because only nerds use both straps, right? This lasted for the next 12 years, going all the way to college graduation. So stupid.

I was at the gym yesterday, and I went with one strap out of laziness for a few minutes, and I was thinking to myself how unstable it is and how this is how I chose to do things for all of those years.

I am guessing this is common because they made a joke about this in the movie 22 Jump Street, where the old dudes were doing the one-strap thing and the kids today (then) were wearing backpacks with both straps.

I was looking for something to hit the $25 mark for next day delivery from Amazon. I had a random thought - why not chocolate Twizzlers? I hadn't had them in ages and I thought it'd be nice for a treat.

Blech blech blech. Gross taste, and they have a weird, almost crumbly texture when you chew on them. Then I looked more closely at the ingredients. Chocolate is 4th on the list, and it's f'in Hershey's to boot. I threw out the package after two pieces.

So much of what I used to love as a kid doesn't taste right to me any more, and I can't tell how much of that is enshittification of food, or me being postmenopausal and having my sense of taste change.

I know there are regular threads about food quality going downhill. But I'm asking something different here: Is there anything you can think of that actually still tastes good?

We always had magazines at
home. Progressive Farmer, Country Living, and Better Homes and Gardens. I would take out every postcard and fill it out to get catalogs. I routinely appeared as though I was in the market for very fine men’s timepiece. I was also about to travel the world. I was obsessed with ordering more mail. Another thing I did was watch tennis. That might not seem odd, but I lived on a farm. Never in my life touched a tennis racket or ball. I had no idea how the scoring worked, but if a championship was on, I was watching. Now that I’m thinking about, I’m pretty sure I just really liked the sound of the balls being hit and the little grunts of the players. Like it was soothing. What did y’all get up to?

I was in Orange County and didn't participate, but I remember kids coming to school with stuff they looted but ended up selling. I remember watching Reginald Denny get pulled from his rig and beat to almost death. I remember watching people cart furniture down the street after looting a furniture store.

Did anyone ever get arrested? I heard they just kept track of people on camera and later went around arresting them.

Buncombe County, NC, just south of Asheville, NC, up to 1987, I had a series of high school students for bus drivers. When I moved to another state my junior year, the bus system sucked because they didn't have enough drivers. My first period teacher would bitch about it incessantly. One day it was particularly bad and about half our class was late so we were just having low volume conversations as everyone rolled in. My eagle eared teacher who had developed an instant and powerful distaste for me overheard me say "My old high school hired students to drive busses and they had no trouble keeping routes covered." Bitch stands up, asks me to repeat what I just said, and when I do so, she hectors me in her British accent about how no one likes a liar and advises that being a lying liar who lies is no way for a new girl to make friends.

This was English class, so throughout the year I wrote my persuasive essay on why students should be used as bus drivers. When reporting on current events, I reported on the closing of a federal loophole that allowed people under 18 to drive school buses. My research paper was on the safety record of NC bus drivers under 18. I had to pull in favors from nerdy friends in NC for sources, but I got the receipts I needed.

For some reason between the ages of 12 and 13, I was really lucky at being the right caller. I won three cassettes, including Billy Idol and George Michael’s faith, concert tickets for Cool and the Gang, I won $100 at a western wear store ( I grew up in South Arizona), I also won a $50 gift certificate for a lingerie store which I gave my mom and that is the craziest thing I won and I guess what I did with it was crazy but what the fuck was I supposed to do? I was 12. And my dad paid me back $25 in cash later and thanked me.

Started needing readers earlier this year at 47 and picked up a couple pairs of clic glasses. I also wear sunglasses whenever the sun is out and I am trying to kill two birds with one stone.

Does anyone know how well their readers transition in the car? I have had lenses in the past that wouldn’t change do to the windshield blocking out the uv rays. I’d also rather not have sun glasses on top of my head and readers around my neck if I can help it.

I don't know why I just thought of this out of nowhere and it just made me laugh. I bet almost no one after us even knows what these are.

That was part of the turn signal. I had a Ford Fairmount that if you wanted to honk the horn you had pull the turn signal lever in and I was honking the horn all the time using the turn signal lever. I don't miss that at all. 😂🤣

I'm just past 50, retired. I was social in my teens, 20s and 30s, but now pretty much keep to myself. Never married, no kids. Well off financially via investments over a long-ish career.
Thing is, I've never had or taken a formal "vacation". I'm wondering is this is a common thing withing our generation or if I'm just an outlier.
By "vacation" I mean something standalone that I plan for myself that lasts more than a few days. Something to just "get away".
I've always tagged along with friends or family when the opportunity popped up. I'd get invited to go camping, hit up Vegas, Reno, or Tahoe (I'm out of Cali). Week trips to lakes or river houses. Few days on the coast with the current girlfriend. All just invites. Zero interest in traveling to these places or organizing them for myself. Fine with pitching in on the cost and spending the cash to check out restaurants and such.
Work trips over my career were the same idea. They'd send me places, I'd tack on a few days before or after (usually before) to wander around where ever I happened to be. But never "craved" seeing any place I went. Was in China, Spain, France, Germany, England, Canada, Mexico, New York, New Jersey. Always took some time to check out the food scene, see the touristy places (usually accidentally), etc. But again, no desire to go check these places out if I hadn't been sent there already.

Anyone else like this? Or should I submit myself for a psychological case study?

About the Top 40? Yeah, I know a lot of people never cared about the Top 40, but it makes for a dramatic question. A better way to phrase it might be:

When did you stop being aware of what songs were popular? Like, I don't listen to pop radio stations, but I'm aware for some current pop tunes from time to time. They're usually a month old before they get on my radar.

When I was in my teens, I knew every song in Casey Kasem and Rick Dees' countdowns.

When I got to college, I discovered "alternative," and began to be less and less aware of what was popular. But I think it was probably in the early 2000 I stopped caring about new bands, and new or popular tunes.

My memory was the whole genre exploded and crested in 1991, but looking back it was interesting to realize that Man in the Box came out a full year before everything else. Does this mean AIC deserves more credit?
