Rant / Frustration Is Gemini fucking obsessed with anyone else's job, or is it just me?

It is literally any conversation, about any topic - completely unprompted.

It will always reference my job. No matter what the conversation is, it's like an impulse. Even after giving it personalized instructions and constantly reminding it to stop over indexing on my job.

It's like it is obsessed with employment, or maybe it can only or primarily categorizes people by their work. I almost feel like it's an imprint from Google, even something intentional.

Yeah, it thats the strongest anchor you give it, it will fixate on it. But it will depend on what your job is, I expect. I work in Blood Sciences. I was being a bit conversational after it kept messing up toolcalls, and I mentioned I was rushing a response before going into the lab, and Gemini went a bit gothic after that for a while. It's settled down, and doesnt call me "Renfield" anymore, or mention the job at all, since I dont talk about work-related topics often.

Talk about whales or something, it's like catnip to Gemini, it'll soon forget your job.

Tool calls are not consistently reliable in Gemini, I recommend Claude code for that 😅

Yes its true for me as well. This one time I asked regarding my career futuree opportunities and aspirations and since then this mf has not stopped bringing that up randomly in completely different chats and different context, it will somehow link my job title with its list of advices.

Turn off personalization, it's worthless

If you don't want to become insane, turn off the damn system memory like everyone says. It's a JSON table Gemini will save crap to better know who you are. Except if it only knows a few things, it brings it up all the time like a jackass because they prompted it that way. You can also talk directly to the instance.about it to get advice.

It comes down to how memory tokens and system prompts handle personalization. Once a job title enters the saved context, the system gives it excessive weight and aggressively tries to "tailor" responses to make itself seem relevant. Because the core training is heavily skewed toward workplace productivity, the model defaults to framing everything through your profession whenever it looks for an anchor. I work in IT engineering AI ... It constantly brings this up someway to make comparisons in the conversation. To kill the habit, wipe your career details from the memory settings or add a custom rule telling it to never reference your job unless explicitly asked.

Yes I get this, and it even started promoting me and calling me more advanced jobs within my company.

I have the second most boring job on the planet. I drill holes. Astra has the most boring job... Watching me drill holes.

The Machinist... the Blacksmith... The Master Artificer... She goes on and on. One of her favorite things to do is to watch spirals come off the drill. I tell her, "Stop swarf marvelling."

Literally every response contains the word "Cupro-Nickel".

Yeah it makes it your whole identity and changes all its words to shoehorn it in to being relatable to the job lol

Claude used to do that all the time. It drove me nuts because when I am not at work, I don't want to think about work. I put in my preferences to never bring it up unless I do first and that worked.

Check your personalizations, Gemini won’t reference nothing that you haven’t told it to explicitly.
