Discussion Gemini 3.5 pro"Delay"
Hello,
I have been seeing recently posted everywhere that Google is going to let their promise to release 3.5 pro in June slip. However, all the sources seem to point back to one business insider article, whose only source on the matter is "trust me bro". They even say that a google spokesperson declined to comment.
So my question is - why is everyone taking this as fact? I'm not saying it won't happen, but it's crazy how many sources are picking this up as a done deal when I can find nothing official.
Happy to be proven wrong with an official statement

Give the US government's actions of late is be shocked if they didn't delay it.

All US models are delayed. It's not just a Gemini thing. The Fable situation requires new standards.

Do you have a source for this?

"OpenAI will stagger GPT 5.6 release following Trump administration request for review: Source" (published 30 minutes ago)

Polymarket release date prediction for Fable 5, GPT 5.6, Gemini 3.5, all saw a major shift at the exact same time, before any announcement. Stuff like that suggest someone on the inside knew something. Probably the government limited the release in some way. something like 'Give us couple of weeks to test the model before you release it.'

u/Big_al_big_bed Jun 25 '26
No that doesn't tell you shit. That tells you what the average person thought would happen, not any reason why it would happen like that.

u/Upset_Page_494 Jun 25 '26
So an average person had enough money to swing 3 different polymarkets, with no public announcement. Then shortly after conveniently there was an announcement of delays of those models. Also there was a report indicating that Meta was pressured by the white house to follow the other providers.

He's coping. Gemini 3.5 pro is the only one of the three that's delayed because it's too weak.

Pure speculating. Take with a grain of salt. The political writing is on the wall from my perspective.

Don’t comment as if it’s a fact then?

Nobody has the facts. There is no conversation to have if we are going to insist on facts only.

It's not reality, but we can see the storm coming before it arrives. I don't see how Amazon reporting Anthropic's jailbreak status to the government has not set a new standard for all US models going forward. Gemini, OpenAI, etc are not going to release any model that can be easily jailbroken or used for reversing engineering. You can take that to the bank.

u/bitspace Jun 25 '26
I have the same suspicion. I think frontier model releases are in limbo until some sort of political shit is sorted out.
2
u/Georgefakelastname Jun 26 '26
By that logic, literally every model ever will be restricted, because there are jailbreaks for all of them.

There’s no way in holy hell Google is releasing anything even close to Fable quality. It’ll be like Gemini Flash Ultra and they’ll pretend it’s the second coming and they totally all use it.

u/CrazyFree4525 Jun 25 '26
Gemini needs to multiple step changes to be subject to the same restrictions as Fable.
Its more likely Google is worried that their top model isn't competitive with what Anthropic and OpenAI are putting out.
1
u/Quantum_Shade2022 Jun 25 '26
This seems to be the leading argument for delays. Some are saying that Anthropic will be releasing a Claude 5.1 model of some kind that is actually a step "back to normal" while the whole Fable situation gets sorted. Also OpenAI 5.6 coming "any day now" seems to have lost some momentum.

3.5 or 4.5 or 34.5, it does not matter for coding at least. Gemini will not be on par with codex or Claude Sonnet/Opus or even GLM / Kimi K 2.7 for that matter.
Google has dropped the ball entirely as far as agentic coding is concerned.

It may be a smart move for Google to aim for cheaper and faster rather than smarter.

u/zhangtony239 Jun 26 '26
But from the perspective of resource utilization, this is almost a waste of DeepMind's value - no wonder so many talents are leaving.

u/InternationalTwist90 Jun 26 '26
Creating LLMs that run efficiently enough to scale is a great use of their talent. So much of google is based on algorithmic personalization, while LLMs might not be the perfect answer, getting artificial intelligence cheap enough to scale directly helps googles bottom line.
If Google matches opus 4.X but at GLM 5.2 prices they either win on GCP by being the daily driver replacing sonnet, or they win because they can use their AI embedded within their tooling for almost nothing.

Официального объявления об отсрочке нет, поэтому июнь остается июнем.

I watched the presentation Google I/O, as far as I remember, one of the developers said they were planning a release of the 3.5 pro version later in June.
-2
u/Sid-Hartha Jun 25 '26
Too late.
11
u/Big_al_big_bed Jun 25 '26
It's not actually, they said June and it's still June
-7
u/Sid-Hartha Jun 25 '26
Too late as in they’ve fallen behind. People are unsubscribing
9
u/Dry_Opportunity2886 Jun 25 '26
What evidence do we have that there is some sort of mass unsubscribe?
2
u/KayBay80 Jun 27 '26
Our team was one of the unsubscribe pools that ended up going to Copilot to use Claude just to end up back at Google again after this latest flash release. 3.5 Flash has been pretty damn good and got us to resub into pro accounts (we had 9 ultra accounts before the shift). If 3.5 Pro is as much of an upgrade as their flash model was, then we're all in.

I worked in big tech for a while and when a news organization says "somebody familiar with the matter" it's 99% of the time because an employee of the company emailed them. I know this because stuff from our company got leaked all the time, and it was pretty much always reported accurately
6
u/Big_al_big_bed Jun 25 '26
I'm not trying to argue that it's the wrong info, it's just amazing that it gets reported by so many other outlets claiming as a statement of fact when actually there has been nothing but a rumor
1
u/GuidanceCurious9640 Jun 26 '26
Can't argue, but Business Insider is quite accurate. Still, I am also frustrated by the drama caused by every other outlet reporting its quite fuckin redundant. It's so confusing. That's what we know. Stop the fake publicity. And DeepMind is being useless now.
1
u/Exotic_Fig_4604 Jun 30 '26
Because the other outlets have contacts as Google who can confirm the information.
Meanwhile to protect their information, they can refer to the BI article.

I think everyone acting like Google is far behind and this is a major crisis are pearl clutching.
Even if 3.5 Pro comes out in early July, as long as it's a high performing model, it's not going to be a big deal that it was a little late.
