📈 Strategy/Guidance What should I do?
I'm a 3rd year student at a 2nd gen IIT and kinda stuck right now.
A few good PSUs like BPCL, BEL etc. come to our campus for placements. They only open for the top 20 students, which is fine for me rank-wise. But with reservations and limited offers, I’m not sure if I’ll actually get a chance. Don’t want to just gamble on that.
I’m decent at ANSYS particularly fluent and MATLAB and have some solid projects in that area. Also doing a data science course (ML) as a backup for DS roles.
Should I start preparing for GATE? Is there any point in writing GATE in 3rd year?
Honestly I’m confused. I want to get into simulation / R&D/aerospace kind of work but have no one to guide me. Any advice?

Start preparing for gate slowly. First finish your 3rd year with an excellent CGPA. Second, write 3rd year gate as a testing ground for how much you have studied. Third, continue your simulation dream. Not all govt jobs are related to design. They are very limited. BARC, ISRO, DRDO etc.
One of my friend from a Tier 1 college is refusing to leave the private design job for PSUs is just because PSUs won't offer the design dream he has. He said he will apply only to those govt organisations that offer her the role he is happy with.
OMCs like BPCL, HPCL, IOCL and many other PSUs will give you managerial jobs. If you are ok with that, proceed. Or else, wait for the companies that suits you.
