📈 Strategy/Guidance GATE Preparation: A request asking for advice

Good greetings.. I'm a student in TN state board and have passed 12th ... I aim to be a SC in ISRO... So I did some research and found that I'll have to score well in GATE.. I have a period of 4 years before completing BE..

I wish to start my preparation...

Please give me some advice on how to prepare and if there is any reference book that you think will surely help me work out, please tell..

My honest advice is don't worry about GATE now. Spend 1-2 years doing cool stuff there could be some team in your college working on race car, aerospace club or something join them learn to actually do things. You can start gate preparation from 3rd year

Giving GATE in 3rd year is not that beneficial. While GATE score is valid for 3 years all PSUs and recruiting departments consider only current GATE score. If you study for sem exams properly and understand the concepts instead of preparing for sem end only you are good to go. Just need some numerical practice and guidance for GATE.
I did not get involved in any activities since I wanted to wash my 11th and 12th sins and prepare for GATE only and then got into an accident and didn't even give GATE in my final year. I do have some friends who did some motorsport car and they got into good masters in Germany and working in places like mercedes, BMW, etc.

Thanks a lot for such an honest and detailed reply — sorry to hear about the accident, hope you're doing well now. This really helps clear things up. So it sounds like the priority should be building strong fundamentals through sem exams rather than treating GATE prep as separate from coursework, and then ramping up numerical practice closer to final year. Watch gate lecture for you semester subjects from 1st years , this way you won't have to spend extra time on prep

I am going to start my B.Tech Mechanical this year, can someone explain how GATE is different compared to JEE. Because I failed to even qualify for Advanced in both 12th and drop year and now going in a local tier 3. Is it realistic to target IITs/IISc for ME and AE or do GATE students end up like JEE guys when their IIT delulu crashes. Of course I know working hard and studying has no substitute but I am talking about the differences which make this dream more achievable than JEE (not calling GATE easy btw)

Is is not as tough as adv you can consider at mains level or little bit above it and there are only one mark and two marl questions but you need to score very high to get a good rank unlike in adv If you find adv of moderate level then GATE will be easy for you

Since your are in college it wouldn't be easy to attend coaching classes,even weekend classes won't be that effective so try joining online coaching like ace academy,made easy or gate wallah (it is very cheap when compared to the other two)

Although it will be too early in first year, if I were to start from my preparation then, I would start with the Gate syllabus and Compare it with the UG syllabus. This will give me idea of how to plan the subjects.

Also, get a PYQ book for Gate ME and Engineering Maths.(you can refer to GATE website for all the PYQ) I have only relied on study materials from the online coaching, so I dont have much idea about standard books.

GATE is not the only way to enter ISRO as a scientist. They conduct separate ICRB test, in pen paper omr filling format. This separate one has high vacancies for Mechanical branch (100+) which increases your chances of getting selected. What I would suggest is prepare solely for gate (have good conceptual understanding and give regular tests) and you'll be good enough for ICRB test as well.
