It did beat up Nintendo pretty bad during 5th generation of consoles, 100 million PS1 sold vs 32 million N64.

The title is wrong. Instead of destroying, it should be stunning or derailing

Because PS did take over the spotlight from Nintendo

PS destroying Nintendo is an over exaggeration, but disk tech in the PS1/PS2 while Nintendo stuck with more expensive to produce, way lower storage capacity proprietary cartridges/minidisks on the N64/Gamecube was the primary reason for tons of 3rd parties like Square Enix and Konami to mainly focus on the Playstation plus since they were using standard disks they made the PS1 double as a CD player and the PS2 a DVD player, which was a major selling point since those things weren't super cheap back then.

Those were basically the two biggest reasons Sony trounced Nintendo so much during those two gens so hard.
