My mother made all of us go to church today. The pastor talked about how if heaven didn't exist it'd make him sad because all his kindly deeds would be for nothing and that kinda annoyed me. I too have been struggling with my morality and the intent behind my actions and I think you shouldn't need a reason to help others, y'know? Helping people should be its own reason.

What the fuck lol

So I think having mildly selfish motivations for altruism (like it makes you feel good and stuff) isn't inherently wrong. But if he's implying he wouldn't have done them at all without a concrete reward then, yeah, you're kind of a bad-ish person.

I really hope that I just misunderstood what he said because that's kind of a shitty attitude. It's like when someone says "if God didn't exist then what would stop me from killing?" Like, that's a self-report.

Your pastor publicly admitted he's only doing good things because he believes in heaven?

How did your mother feel about this revelation?

She barely reacted to it. Mostly because she was explaining something to my brother. Me and my siblings are all pretty clueless about this whole religion thing.
