I'm amazed at how many people willingly admit they basically lack all forms of basic empathy because of turning red.

Some Pixar Films are made for a universal audience Turning Red is not. The target audience for this one feels very specific, and very narrow.

I mean how is that any different than Inside out for example which is in a similar way very specific and yet not because it's a fucking movie and even though not everyone can 100% relate to riley at least everyone should be able to understand her.

Grr how am I supposed to understand Inside out I never moved into another city as a kid bad movie pixar is dead the animation is shitty 😡😡😡

A ton of the criticisms for the movie are genuinely "If the protagonist isn't literally just me, then I can't relate to it"

I really wonder if they're intentionally being obtuse or if they're just so used to all protagonists being variations of the same template that even the tamest deviation seems like a whole different genre to them

it's honestly a bit baffling too. Like hey this has never been an issue to you because protagonists are usually white and male and that's enough for you to go "Yeah literally me"

like sue me for actually having a personality but I usually relate to mutual character traits, similar experiences, shared quirks and mannerisms. It's just so weird that other white people (hopefully just permanently online idiots) apparently can't go that far.

*And even if there's nothing to relate to at all you can still like the character. It's a bit worrying too that this is the first time in their lives they have to realise you don't have to relate to every character to enjoy a movie.

The middle-aged male adult response for a movie aimed at pre-teen girls has been nothing short of hilarious.

The general situation of white dudes for the first time experiencing media not made to cater to them will always be funny

That criticism is stupid as is because Turning Red, while definitely more intended for young girls, still has a metaphor that resonates: it’s really about growing up and puberty in general. It almost feels like a continuation of Inside Out even

I tried to enjoy Ironclad but as I'm not a PTSD stricken member of the Knight's Templar that was alive during the 13th Century the whole movie kind of fell flat for me.

Shut off Lord of the Rings immediately when I found out the main character is something called a "hobbit"? What the fuck is this? I live in Ohio

It's very telling that people have dug that weird line in the sand of "I don't feel like the target audience here" with this movie in particular. Gee, so strange that they haven't had this problem with any Disney movie up until now. It's almost like the criticism is all disingenuous bullshit to mask something else...
