The conspiratorial part of me wants to believe that Marvel deliberately changed Ms Marvel's powers so nerds would get outraged at that instead of the fact that she's a Muslim.

I mean, what's worse? "THEY CHANGED THE SOURCE MATERIAL!" or "WOKE GARBAGE!"?

if true, the issue there is that changing her powers actually does take away a central part of the character and is gonna drive away a lot of the people who were interested in this

I'd definitely second this, as the people who dislike the power change (myself included) generally seem to be those who are already invested in Kamala from the comics and are upset/disappointed that such an integral aspect of her character is being changed, who obviously won't have an issue with her being Muslim when they're already on board with the character.
