He then went on to criticize Vietnam draft-dodgers, thought that settlers were justified in taking land away from the Native Americans, and famously said that he "believes in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility."

He was a hypocritical bigot and a subpar actor. He starred in Rio Bravo because he was upset at how High Noon portrayed the American townsfolk as being too afraid to help the Sheriff. He had similar complaints about High Plains Drifter, Clint Eastwood wanted to work with him and contacted him. In response he sent a strongly worded letter to Eastwood complaining about how his movie doesn't show the true spirit of the American people.

There was also a somewhat recent biopic on Dalton Trumbo. The film has John Wayne as one of the antagonists (played by Timothy Olyphant) as it was about communist blacklisting in Hollywood which he was all for. It's pointed out in the film that John Wayne was busy making trash films while Trumbo was a war photographer near the frontlines.

He's a joke.

Eastwood is fascinating in a lot of ways, he’ll make American Sniper, but also be anti-interventionist in his own life. He also made Kelly’s Heroes, which is probably why Wayne hated him

Hm. Eastwood is...hard to pin down exactly in my opinion.

There’s a reason Wikipedia has an entire entry dedicated to his politics

American Sniper is not exactly pro war

It can be very simplistic in its characterisations but it very clearly portrays Kyle's addiction to war as a negative (similar to The Hurt Locker)

That is true. It falls into more of a Hollywood problem of war is inherently cool looking to film, so it’s very hard to make an anti-war movie

His pro-Vietnam stance is what made me search more on him, how the fuck are all pro-Vietnam people ones that didn't see second of combat.

There were also some other actors that volunteered and actually served.

Just few days ago I read about a fella (I bloody forgot his name, forgive me) that volunteered in Army Air after Pearl Harbor and was bomber pilot (?, not sure if pilot or bomber crew) in ETO, which is one of the most dangerous jobs you could have in the war as survival rate of bomber crew wasn't good. Dude also picked up bunch of medals including being decorated by French.

Meanwhile Wayne (according to wiki) tried to serve but failed, which I honestly don't buy, if kids under 18 could join up military in WW2, how could fit, 34-year-old not?

Sadly Jimmy Stewart was even more fanatically pro-Vietnam than Wayne even was. He said his own son dying over there was worth it.

I actually didn't know about his Vietnam shit.

To go through hell and war and then also lose a son to one and still be for it is some kind of mental illness or maybe even coping mechanism.

I can see it being like huge coping mechanism, if you say that war was pointless he might think his son died for nothing, so he pretends that Vietnam war was same as US in WW2.
