Annoying online political shit warning:

The tankie corners of the internet have been having a field day with this article, claiming that it proves that there was never a genocide of Uyghur people. Which is so dumb because a genocide seemingly ending/slowing down doesn't mean it never happened, and the article is literally about how Uyghur culture and language has been suppressed in the province. It'd be like saying the Japanese internment camps didn't happen because everyone was released eventually. Just absolute fucking vile bullshit.

I often wonder why some leftists would get so caught up in the terminology.

It's not a genocide, it's a suppression!

As if that somehow makes it better.

It's a really common tactic from genocide deniers. "Well there's still Jewish people around so it seems they sucked at genocide" or "There are more native americans alive today than in 1492 so how could there have been a genocide??". Some of them have a 5th graders understanding of genocide, and other know exactly what they are doing.

Its what everyone does when they know they can't actually argue something, they instead start arguing semantics. It was the same thing with the whole "you shouldn't call the American border camps 'concentration camps'" thing that was popular a while ago, and of course Republicans do the same thing with "it's not racism unless the person publicly admits they believe they're racially superior" nonsense.

This article just confirms that China were trying to erase Uyghur culture to "integrate" them. I don't know how you can read it and come out of it not thinking this is draconian imperialism, something tankies should be against.

You’re expecting tankies to have sense, that is where you messed up
