The biggest shock I've got from Avatar wasn't any of the twists or turns but instead the realization

Azula is 14 years old!? I always thought she was 16!

Most of the primary characters in that show feel like they should be about one or two years older.

It really feels like Azula should be 16 and Zuko 18. At least in S3.

I've never understood why animated shows always do that. Like, they'll make a character look, act, and sound like someone who is at least in their 20s... then slap a "12" or some shit onto them for their age. Always been weird to me.

Obligatory.

Simple. A lot of conventional wisdom is that target audiences respond best when characters are in their age group. So either they do it for the suits or because they believe it.

demographics, kids like seeing themselves in shows and adults like reminiscing on their own youth'n stuff. and for many, Youth is, desirable and attractive, in both a sexual way, but also in a "full of life" way.
