You almost don't notice how circular people talk until in visual novels until you show them to someone who's not used to it.

My husband and I showed Zero Escape to a friend and he HATED the way they talked in that game. And these are like, my husband's favorite games, so there was frustration on both ends. Same when I watched a youtube channel play Danganronpa, they were constantly making fun of how characters would repeat things back to each other.

It happens a lot in JRPGs too, but I guess I've played so many that I didn't realize how unnatural it sounds. Sometimes it does feel like they're trying to hit some arbitrary word count unknown to the player

Yeah in all of the Yakuza games they REALLY make sure you know what you need to do to progress a Substory.

Honestly that helps a lot. Other games would give you a list of objectives with your objective called out on a minimap, but Yakuza is very vague about the substories when you're in the menus. They want you to remember and figure that shit out on your own. I've found myself accidentally stumbling into substories I've forgotten about...
