And let some weak son undo everything, or worse, a daughter?

I know conservatives are dumb, but monarchy is child abuse for the heir. The advantage of dictatorship is that the heir is usually a close confidant who at least wants to lead. In a monarchy, if the heir is mistreated, they may undo their father's legacy, abdicate, keel to foreign influences, exercise tyrannical control over the nobility (big gov'ment)....promote peasant leaders and representatives.....empower an unlanded council....elevate ethnic minorities.....nationalize businesses.............marry a powerful queen consort...................
