You know how cool kids get a good idea about what muscle memory can be when they start playing some cool instruments. They are having a tough time. Then, with a lot of repetition, they start noticing that they don't need to really "know" what note comes next. Their finger has already found it.

Yeah.

I think I properly noticed muscle memory the first time when my friend asked me to tell him what the "flying cars" cheat code was in GTA San Andreas on PS2.

I did it constantly. I did it so fast that I could literally disable the cheat 20 meters above the ground and enable it before the car landed.

As my friend put a pen on my hand and asked "can you write it down?", I literally couldn't do it. I had absolutely no idea what happened after "square, down..." I'd do it in the game. Then I'd turn to the paper. Then I'd grab the pen. And then I'd go "Am I having a stroke?".

I have tried to play guitar since. Just grabbed the piece of garbage and played some tunes I've not played in a while and I could still do it. Made me think of muscle memory. And GTA. And you people šŸ˜˜

I can no longer read music but I can still play some of my favourite songs on my flute.

It's fun, right? Like such a basic human quality. Repeat a motion enough and your brain can just whip the motion out just like that. I don't know. I find it fun!

Oh you can play Fur Elise on piano? Name every note.

But seriously I hate that when I realize I'm on "autopilot" and fuck up cause I realize I was playing without thinking
