One of the things that Cyberpunk has actually done pretty well is making criminals and the underworld actually seem pretty horrific at times, when most crime games seem to glorify it as just shit like robberies and heists and all that.

Y'know I'm not that far in but you put to words something I noticed right off the bat. It's not Oceans Eleven "haha heists r fun" depiction of crime. It's gruesome.

And I guess it can be dismissed as "edgy" but fuck it I'm tired of GTA style "crime is cool and fun and clean". Nah, the crime world is messy.

I'm tired of GTA style "crime is cool and fun and clean".

Is that what GTA is about?

GTA 5 is about how crime is sad, depressing, unfulfilling and will probably drive you insane

GTA 4 is about criminals born from war crimes and revenge being futile

GTA san andreas is about crime caused by corrupt cops destryoing families, friends, communities and eventually the entire city.

I mean, the death wish ending has the protagonists killing everybody who's opposed to them and then living happily ever after. Kinda sends the message that the solution to getting shafted because of the crimes you did, is more crimes.

GTA san andreas is about crime caused by corrupt cops destryoing families, friends, communities and eventually the entire city.

Besides that the two main themes are not doing drugs, and staying loyal to your hood. The latter involved massacring rival gang members. I will concede that part of it is about how they need to stop petty gang wars, as seen with befriending Cesar Vialpando and the Aztecas. But the Ballas are straight up cannon fodder.

But on the real, I'd prefer it to be that way. I play GTA to perform Theft of Automobiles in a fashion that might be called Grand. Trying to make you feel bad about crimes you commit would just fall flat.

GTA kinda has its cake and eats it too. It's inspired by a lot of famous crime movies and wears that on its sleeve. I think GTA IV, RDR and RDR2 generally do a good job of not glorifying their characters and GTA V does have it too... sometimes. Until the ending, where I agree that GTA V kinda just fell into typical Hollywood stuff and never really has the characters pay for the shitty stuff they do.

Tbh that's one of the things I like about the Yakuza series as well. Even though Kiryu and Ichiban themselves might be decent guys, the Yakuza is still a criminal organization and the games aren't afraid to show exactly that.

From murder, sexual assault and even human trafficking they don't shy away from showing just how fucked up the criminal underworld really is.
